Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShort answer: Switch 2 plays many original Switch games and can reuse some older controllers, digital purchases, saves and settings. But not everything transfers or fits: the original dock and standard microSD cards are incompatible, and original Joy-Con cannot attach to or charge on Switch 2. Check Nintendo’s current compatibility listing for the games you care about before upgrading.
What changes with Switch 2?
Switch 2 is larger than the original console and uses Joy-Con 2 controllers that attach magnetically, rather than the original Joy-Con rail system. The controller generations are not interchangeable in both directions: original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but Joy-Con 2 cannot connect wirelessly to the original Switch.

Display and performance capabilities
With a compatible TV and supported game, Switch 2 can output up to 4K. Compatible games can reach a maximum of 120 frames per second, but 4K output is limited to 60 fps. These are technical ceilings, not guarantees for every game. HDR depends on the game, and variable refresh rate (VRR) support also varies by game and is available only in handheld and tabletop modes. Nintendo’s technical specifications describe the supported output.

Switch 2 has games and features exclusive to the new system. Some existing Switch games receive free updates, while others offer paid Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrades; the improvements and added features vary by title. Check the details for the specific game rather than assuming an upgrade is included or necessary.

Can Switch 2 play original Switch games?
Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital games released for the original Switch, but the entire library is not guaranteed to work perfectly. Nintendo warns that some games may be unsupported or not fully compatible, and says its compatibility work continues. Before upgrading, look up each important title in Nintendo’s live game compatibility listing.
A compatible physical game remains a physical game; a digital purchase is tied to Nintendo Account and transfer arrangements. Game compatibility is separate from whether a title has a free update or a paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade.
What can transfer to Switch 2?
Digital games, saves and settings
Nintendo’s System Transfer can move purchased digital games, certain save data, linked Nintendo Accounts, parental controls and other settings. Digital games redownload on Switch 2 after the transfer rather than being copied as installed data. The process requires an active internet connection and at least one Switch user profile linked to a Nintendo Account. GameChat settings must be adjusted separately. See Nintendo’s System Transfer guide for the procedure and scope.

Nintendo Switch Online
An existing Nintendo Switch Online membership can continue on Switch 2. Nintendo also identifies GameChat and a GameCube Classics collection as Switch 2 additions; access to GameCube Classics requires the Expansion Pack membership. Membership continuity does not mean every new feature has identical requirements.

Will original Switch controllers work?
Original Joy-Con and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can be used wirelessly with Switch 2 in compatible games. Original Joy-Con cannot attach to the new console or charge on it. The original Pro Controller can be charged through the Switch 2 dock using USB.
Older controllers do not supply features that require Joy-Con 2, such as mouse controls. Their HOME button also cannot wake Switch 2 from sleep. In practice, wireless pairing preserves some controller use, not full feature parity.

Nintendo’s GameShare can send supported games from a Switch 2 to either a Switch 2 or an original Switch. An original Switch can only receive locally shared games from a Switch 2. Virtual game cards can be managed across two Switch 2 or original Switch consoles at a time, subject to Nintendo’s rules. Check Nintendo’s compatibility and sharing information for applicable limits.

Which original accessories are incompatible?
Dock, power adapter and HDMI cable
The original Switch dock does not work with Switch 2. The original AC adapter can charge Switch 2 when connected directly to the console, but Nintendo says its output is insufficient to power TV mode. Nintendo also says the HDMI cable supplied with the original Switch is not compatible with Switch 2.
microSD storage
Switch 2 is designed for microSD Express cards. A conventional microSD card from the original Switch cannot expand Switch 2 game storage; it can only be used to view screenshots and videos captured on Switch. For expandable game storage, choose a compatible microSD Express card. Nintendo explains the card distinction in its compatibility guidance.
Joy-Con accessories
Accessories shaped for the original Joy-Con may not fit Joy-Con 2. Nintendo specifically says the standard Joy-Con grip and charging grip cannot be used with Joy-Con 2. Original Joy-Con still connect wirelessly, so an older accessory may retain a use when paired with those controllers and a compatible game; do not assume every accessory carries over.
How to decide whether the upgrade fits you
Work through these checks before buying:
- Check your game library. Look up each must-play physical and digital game in Nintendo’s current compatibility listing, including any title that depends on a particular controller feature.
- Decide whether upgrades matter. Compare the benefits of any relevant Switch 2 Edition upgrade with the base game you already own; upgrade availability and features vary by title.
- Plan your transfer. Confirm your user profile is linked to a Nintendo Account and that you can connect to the internet. Identify which saves and settings you need to move, and expect digital games to redownload.
- Inventory accessories realistically. Budget around a new dock and compatible TV-mode connection; original Joy-Con may still work wirelessly, while the old dock, conventional microSD card for game storage, and some grips do not.
- Weigh the new capabilities. Decide whether Switch 2’s larger form, supported display and performance features, and exclusive games matter enough for your use. The stated resolution and frame-rate maxima apply only to compatible games and supported setups.
Compatibility lists, game updates, accessory availability and prices can change. Verify current information for your games and accessories rather than relying on a blanket promise that everything from the original system will work.
