Choose Nintendo Switch 2 if the Nintendo games you care about and an easy handheld-to-TV console setup are the priority. Choose Steam Deck if your must-play games are on Steam and you want a portable PC with more desktop and peripheral flexibility. Neither is a universal winner: check the exact games you play, current local prices, storage needs, and where you expect to play before buying.
What’s the main difference?
Switch 2 is Nintendo’s hybrid console: it plays Nintendo games in handheld, tabletop, and TV modes. Steam Deck is a portable PC running SteamOS 3, built around the Steam catalog and able to connect to displays and peripherals over USB-C. That difference in game libraries and use matters more than treating the devices as interchangeable performance options.

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa described Switch 2 as “the next step in at-home gaming that can be taken on the go” in Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 launch announcement. That is Nintendo’s positioning, not an independent comparison. The available specifications do not establish that one device runs all games better, and the two platforms do not offer a like-for-like library.
Which games do you want to play?
Switch 2: Nintendo’s library and compatible Switch games
Switch 2 is the natural fit if the games you most want are Nintendo releases or titles available on the Nintendo platform. It also plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but compatibility is not universal: Nintendo says some titles may not be supported or may not work fully. Check the individual game using Nintendo’s Switch and Switch 2 compatibility information before counting on it.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Steam Deck: your Steam library, title by title
Steam Deck is a stronger match when your priority games are already in your Steam library or you want to buy from Steam’s PC catalog. A PC game appearing in the catalog does not by itself guarantee a good Deck experience. Valve’s Deck Verified program identifies how games work on Deck; check each important title, and recheck if compatibility status may have changed.
How do the play modes compare?
| Use | Nintendo Switch 2 | Steam Deck |
|---|---|---|
| Handheld | Built-in handheld mode. | Built-in portable PC gaming. |
| Tabletop | Nintendo documents tabletop play. | Can be propped up, but Valve describes it as a PC rather than a console with Nintendo’s documented tabletop mode. |
| TV or external display | Hybrid console with TV mode; supported setups can output up to 4K. | Connects to displays and USB-C peripherals as a PC. |
If you regularly move between handheld play and a television and want that to be the console’s central design, Switch 2 has the clearer fit. If you want to connect a portable computer to displays and peripherals, Steam Deck offers PC-style flexibility. Its SteamOS 3 system includes a KDE Plasma desktop, but that flexibility does not mean every PC game or program will work perfectly.

Which screen and display features matter to you?
| Specification | Nintendo Switch 2 | Steam Deck OLED |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in display | 7.9-inch LCD | 7.4-inch HDR OLED |
| Resolution | 1920×1080 in handheld mode | 1280×800 |
| Refresh or frame-rate support | Up to 120fps in compatible games | Up to 90Hz refresh rate |
| TV or external display | Supported TV modes include up to 4K; 4K output is capped at 60fps. 4K, HDR, and VRR require compatible games and a compatible display. | USB-C display output; supported output depends on the display and connected setup. |
These specifications describe different things: a screen’s resolution, panel type, refresh rate, and the output available in a supported game or display setup. They do not predict the visual quality or frame rate every game will deliver. Choose Switch 2 if its larger 1080p built-in LCD or supported TV output best fits your use; choose the OLED Deck if OLED contrast and up-to-90Hz refresh are more appealing. Nintendo’s feature information notes that TV-mode VRR support was added in a system update released September 10, 2026.
How long does the battery last?
| Device | Published estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Approximately 2–6.5 hours | Nintendo manufacturer estimate. |
| Steam Deck OLED | 3–12 hours | Valve estimate; runtime depends on content. |
These are manufacturer-published ranges, not a controlled head-to-head test. A range cannot tell you which handheld will last longer in the same game and settings. Treat expected runtime as game-dependent rather than a guaranteed session length.

What about storage and price?
Nintendo lists 256GB of internal storage for Switch 2. Valve lists OLED Steam Deck configurations with 512GB or 1TB, and the Deck supports microSD cards (SD, SDXC, and SDHC). Storage needs depend on the games you install; compare the configuration you would actually buy rather than assuming the listed capacity is all equally available for your games.
Nintendo announced U.S. launch MSRPs of $449.99 for Switch 2 and $499.99 for the Switch 2 plus Mario Kart World bundle in 2025. These are historical launch prices, not current retailer offers; Nintendo’s April 18, 2025 pricing notice described launch pricing and noted that market conditions could affect pricing later. Steam Deck prices vary by model and market. Check the current official or local listing for each device, then compare like-for-like configurations and any storage you expect to add.
