Switch 2 is a meaningful upgrade if you want a larger, sharper handheld screen, higher-resolution TV output, or access to Switch 2 games. It is less compelling if your original Switch already does what you need: many Switch games work on the new console, but compatibility is not universal, conventional microSD cards cannot store Switch 2 game data, and transferring a system has important caveats. Check your games, data needs, and current prices before deciding.

What’s different between Switch 2 and the original Switch?

The biggest changes are the display, TV output, and storage. Nintendo’s current specifications list Switch 2 with a 7.9-inch, 1920 × 1080 LCD screen, HDR10 support, and variable refresh rate (VRR) up to 120Hz. In TV mode, it can output up to 3840 × 2160 at 60 frames per second, or up to 120 frames per second at selected lower resolutions. These are supported capabilities, not a guarantee that every game uses them. Nintendo’s Switch 2 technical specifications detail the available modes.

Feature Switch 2 Original Switch
Built-in screen 7.9-inch LCD, 1920 × 1080; HDR10 and VRR up to 120Hz (Nintendo specification, accessed 2026) Not stated in the cited Nintendo Switch 2 specification
TV output Up to 3840 × 2160 at 60fps, or up to 120fps at selected lower resolutions (Nintendo specification, accessed 2026) Not stated in the cited Nintendo Switch 2 specification
Internal storage 256GB UFS (Nintendo specification, accessed 2026) Not stated in the cited Nintendo Switch 2 specification
Game storage expansion microSD Express, up to 2TB (Nintendo specification, accessed 2026) Conventional microSD cards; those cards cannot store Switch 2 game data
Estimated battery life 2–6.5 hours, Nintendo estimate; actual life varies with the games played No directly comparable figure established here

The display and output differences matter most if you play in handheld mode or have a 4K TV. The specs describe what the system can support; they do not establish how a particular game looks or performs on either console.

Will your Switch games work on Switch 2?

Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but not every title is guaranteed to work fully. Nintendo cautions that some games may be unsupported or have limited functionality because the consoles’ hardware differs. Check each game you care about using Nintendo’s Switch game compatibility guidance and its compatibility support information.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Some games have a free update for Switch 2; others may offer a paid upgrade. Availability and terms are title-specific, so do not assume an upgrade is included. If a particular game is the reason you are considering a new console, confirm its compatibility and upgrade conditions before buying.

Can you use an old microSD card on Switch 2?

Not for Switch 2 game data. The new console uses microSD Express cards for expandable game storage, with support up to 2TB. A conventional microSD card from the original Switch can be used to copy screenshots and videos, according to Nintendo’s specifications, but Nintendo says it is not compatible with Switch 2 for game data. Nintendo’s technical specifications and its transfer guidance cover the distinction.

Nintendo Switch 2 System with Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 Bundle
  • The next evolution of the Nintendo Switch system
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Supports up to 4K resolution** when using a compatible game and TV connected via the included Nintendo Switch 2 dock
  • Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***

Plan for the console’s 256GB internal storage or a microSD Express card if you expect to keep a large game library installed. Your old card may still be useful for moving screenshots and videos, but it does not become a Switch 2 game-storage card.

How do you transfer Switch data to Switch 2?

Nintendo provides a system-transfer process during initial setup, with local transfer or a server-upload option. The steps and what moves depend on the option you choose. Nintendo warns that some data cannot be transferred and that source-console data is deleted after transfer; review the specific conditions before starting. See Nintendo’s transfer overview and its system-transfer instructions.

How much does upgrading cost?

Nintendo of America announced U.S. launch MSRPs in 2025: $449.99 for Switch 2 and $499.99 for a Switch 2 and Mario Kart World bundle. The same announcement listed a 256GB Samsung microSD Express card at $59.99 and a Switch 2 carrying case and screen protector at $39.99. These are historical launch prices, not verified current October 2026 retail prices. Check current retailer listings and availability before budgeting. Nintendo’s April 18, 2025 pricing announcement records those launch figures.

Your actual upgrade cost may also depend on whether you need a microSD Express card, a case, or paid upgrades for games you already own. Treat those as individual choices rather than unavoidable costs.

Should you upgrade to Switch 2?

Upgrade if the new capabilities matter to you

  • You want a larger, higher-resolution built-in screen or the newer TV-output modes.
  • You want to play Switch 2 games.
  • Your important original Switch games are confirmed compatible, and the transfer and storage changes fit your plans.

Keep your original Switch for now if it still meets your needs

  • You are satisfied with its current handheld and TV experience and do not need Switch 2 games.
  • You rely on particular games or accessories and have not confirmed their compatibility.
  • The current cost of the console plus any storage or game upgrades outweighs the improvements you would use.

For an owner deciding whether Switch 2 is worth it, the practical test is personal: check the games you actually play, decide whether the screen or TV-output changes would matter in your usual setup, and compare the current total cost. There is no need to replace a working console just because a newer model exists.
