The better fit otherwise depends on whether you prefer Overwatch’s 5v5 or 6v6 options or Marvel Rivals’ 6v6 format and team-up abilities—not on a universal value verdict.
Are both games actually free to play?
Yes. Both let players try the core game without buying a base-game copy. That does not mean every item or progression reward is free: each game also has optional cosmetics and seasonal reward systems. For a free-to-play player, separate the cost of entering the game from the cost of collecting optional content.

Are all heroes free in Marvel Rivals?
Marvel Rivals’ official game information states, “ALL HEROES UNLOCKED AND FREE TO PLAY AT LAUNCH AND BEYOND!” That is the publisher’s stated hero-access policy, making the game the more straightforward choice if you do not want hero access tied to a reward track. Do you have to unlock Overwatch heroes?
Blizzard’s policy changed, so older guides can give a misleading answer. The original Overwatch 2 Battle Pass explanation said newly released heroes appeared at tier 55 on the free track. A later developer update said heroes would no longer need to be unlocked through the Battle Pass to be playable in all game modes. How do their match formats and combat features differ?
Blizzard describes Overwatch as offering 5v5 or 6v6 play. Marvel Rivals describes its matches as fast-paced 6v6 combat, with team-up abilities and destructible environments. These are useful distinctions if you already know what kind of team format and feature set you want, but they do not establish which game is better balanced, performs better, or feels better to play. What can free-to-play players spend money on?
Both games offer optional cosmetic content through live-service systems. Marvel Rivals’ December 5, 2024 monetization explanation said paid cosmetics change appearance without adding stat bonuses. It also said players could earn limited quantities of Units through battle passes, achievements, and events, and that a purchased Luxury Battle Pass could be continued in later seasons. Marvel Rivals’ September 9, 2026 Season 10 patch notes document a seasonal battle pass, a limited-time rerun of an earlier pass, shop bundles, and event rewards. This confirms that optional seasonal and shop content remains part of the game, but it does not establish current prices or how long it takes to earn particular rewards. Which one should you choose?
- Choose Marvel Rivals if unrestricted access to the full hero roster is your priority, or you want its stated 6v6 format, team-up abilities, and destructible environments.
- Choose Overwatch if you want a free-to-play team shooter with the option of 5v5 or 6v6 and prefer its particular hero-shooter style. Blizzard’s later policy update means the original Battle Pass tier requirement is not the current general access rule.
- Try both before spending if your decision depends on feel, balance, matchmaking, performance, or community: the official feature descriptions do not establish those subjective or comparative qualities.
What about platforms and cross-play?
Blizzard’s current Overwatch site references teaming up regardless of platform, while its 2022 free-to-play launch announcement listed Windows PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
