Nintendo Switch 2 vs. Switch 1: Which Should You Buy Before the September 2026 Price Hike?

Nintendo’s U.S. Switch 2 price will rise from $449.99 to $499.99 on September 1, 2026. Here’s when Switch 2 is worth buying, when Switch OLED still makes sense, and which storage and accessory costs Switch 1 owners may overlook.

Most U.S. buyers should choose Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo has confirmed that its U.S. MSRP will rise from $449.99 to $499.99 on September 1, 2026. If you already know you want the current platform, buy near $449.99 before that date; if you are undecided, compare the screen, games, storage, and accessory costs before treating the deadline as a reason to purchase.

For most U.S. buyers, the Nintendo Switch 2 is the better purchase—and the timing is now clear. Nintendo says the console’s U.S. MSRP will increase from $449.99 to $499.99 on September 1, 2026, before sales tax. If you have already decided that you want the current Nintendo hybrid console, buying a Nintendo Switch 2 near the current $449.99 MSRP before that date makes sense. If you are not committed, however, do not let the deadline pressure you into buying hardware you do not need.

The original Switch remains worth considering only for a narrower group: buyers who strongly prefer the OLED display, find a genuinely substantial discount, mainly want the existing Switch library, or need an inexpensive second console and do not care about Switch 2-exclusive software.

Switch 2 price increase: what the September 1 deadline actually means

Nintendo’s financial-results materials list the U.S. Nintendo Switch 2 price as $449.99 currently and $499.99 beginning September 1, 2026. That is a confirmed $50 manufacturer price increase—not merely a rumor. U.S. prices exclude sales tax.

The deadline is useful as a buying signal, but it is not a guarantee that every store will sell the console at exactly one price. Retailers may run discounts, offer bundles, or have different inventory. Marketplace listings may also vary. The sensible rule is:

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
  • Already decided to buy Switch 2? Look for it near $449.99 before September 1.
  • Still deciding between generations? Compare the hardware, games, and accessory costs first.
  • Only interested if the price drops? Wait for a verified retailer deal rather than assuming the MSRP increase makes an immediate purchase mandatory.

Switch 2 vs. Switch 1 at a glance

Category Nintendo Switch 2 Switch OLED What it means
U.S. console MSRP $449.99 currently; $499.99 from September 1, 2026 $399.99 on Nintendo’s U.S. listing The current OLED gap is only $50, but actual retailer prices may differ.
Portable display 7.9-inch, 1920×1080 LCD; HDR10 and variable refresh rate support up to 120Hz in compatible modes 7.0-inch OLED touchscreen Switch 2 is larger and sharper; Switch OLED delivers OLED contrast and its distinctive panel look.
Internal storage 256GB 64GB Switch 2 is much better suited to a digital-heavy library.
Expandable storage microSD Express, up to 2TB supported Standard microSD cards Existing Switch storage cards may not solve Switch 2 storage needs.
TV output Up to 4K in compatible games and displays; compatible 1080p or 1440p modes can reach up to 120 fps Older Switch hardware and output capabilities These are supported system capabilities, not guarantees for every game.
GameChat Exclusive; built-in microphone, voice chat, screen sharing, and optional camera video chat Not available Choose Switch 2 if this social feature matters to you.

Display: larger and more capable versus OLED contrast

Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch 1920×1080 LCD with HDR10 and variable refresh rate support up to 120Hz in compatible modes. The Switch OLED has a smaller 7.0-inch OLED touchscreen.

That makes Switch 2 the stronger choice for screen size, resolution, and newer display features. Text, interface elements, and supported games can appear sharper on the larger 1080p panel, and compatible software can take advantage of HDR or higher refresh rates.

It would be wrong to describe the Switch 2 screen as better in every respect. It uses LCD technology, while Switch OLED’s panel offers the deep contrast and visual character that OLED buyers specifically value. If most of your play is handheld and you prefer OLED contrast over resolution and newer display features, the Switch OLED can still be the more satisfying screen.

The price difference is important here. Nintendo lists the Switch OLED at $399.99, only $50 below the current Switch 2 MSRP and equal to the announced post-September Switch 2 MSRP in nominal terms. The OLED becomes a much more compelling alternative only when a retailer’s actual discount makes the gap materially larger.

Storage: Switch 2 fixes one problem but creates a compatibility trap

Switch 2 includes 256GB of internal storage, which Nintendo describes as eight times the original Switch’s capacity. The Switch OLED includes 64GB.

Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con - Handheld Gaming Console

  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends

That difference matters because modern games can consume a significant portion of a console’s usable space. A buyer who downloads most games, keeps several large titles installed, or wants room for future releases will have a much easier starting point with Switch 2.

Important: ordinary Switch microSD cards are not the Switch 2 solution

Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards for saving or loading Switch 2 digital games and save data. Nintendo says capacities up to 2TB are supported. A standard microSD card that worked in Switch 1 should not be treated as a compatible replacement for Switch 2 game storage.

That means existing Switch owners may face an additional purchase. If you expect to download games, budget for a microSD Express card for Nintendo Switch 2 rather than assuming your old card transfers without limitations.

Storage is one of the clearest practical advantages of Switch 2, but it should be included in the real purchase price. The $50 difference between a discounted Switch OLED and Switch 2 can disappear quickly if the older console also requires a storage upgrade for the games you want.

Performance and TV play: a better platform, not a universal 4K guarantee

Nintendo describes Switch 2 as using a custom NVIDIA processor with improvements to processing, graphics, loading speeds, HDR, and TV output. Compatible games and displays can support output up to 4K, while compatible games in 1080p or 1440p modes can support frame rates up to 120 fps.

The qualifiers matter. Those numbers describe what the system can support; they do not mean every game runs at 4K or 120 fps. Actual resolution, frame rate, HDR, and refresh-rate behavior depend on the game, its chosen mode, and the display.

Nintendo Switch Game Console - Black (HAC-001(-01) w/Blue & Red Joycon (Renewed)
  • Play your way with the Nintendo Switch gaming system. Whether you’re at home or on the go, solo or with friends, the Nintendo Switch system is designed to fit your life. Dock your Nintendo Switch to enjoy HD gaming on your TV. Heading out? Just undock your console and keep playing in handheld mode
  • This model includes battery life of approximately 4.5 - 9 hours.
  • The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)
  • Model number HAC 001( 01)

The useful buying conclusion is simpler than the specifications: Switch 2 is the platform to choose if you care about faster loading, improved graphics, newer display support, and stronger TV performance in games that take advantage of the hardware. The original Switch remains functional for its existing software, but it is the older platform with the shorter forward-looking runway.

Games and backward compatibility

Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. “Compatible” is the important word: Nintendo warns that some Switch games may not be supported or may not be fully compatible, so do not assume that every title, accessory-dependent mode, or peripheral works perfectly without checking the specific game.

Some Switch games receive free updates or paid upgrade packs. Nintendo’s Switch 2 Edition designation refers to a package containing the original Switch game and an upgrade pack that enhances the experience on Switch 2. This gives existing owners a way to carry parts of their library forward while receiving improved versions where a publisher supports them.

For a new buyer, the practical advantage is clear: Switch 2 can cover compatible legacy games while also giving access to newer releases designed for the current hardware. Buying Switch 1 today does not provide the same access to Switch 2-exclusive software. That does not mean every future game will be exclusive, but Switch 2 is the safer choice for anyone who expects to follow Nintendo’s newer releases.

Do Switch 1 games cost more on Switch 2?

Not necessarily, but the software model can be more complicated than simply inserting an old cartridge. Some games receive free updates; others have paid upgrade packs; and Switch 2 Edition releases bundle the original game with the relevant enhancement. Nintendo also says that new Nintendo-published digital titles exclusive to Switch 2 can have a different MSRP from physical editions beginning with May 2026 releases. Retail partners set their own game prices, so compare the console MSRP, game MSRP, upgrade-pack price, and retailer discount separately.

GameChat: a real Switch 2 feature, with an optional camera

GameChat is exclusive to Switch 2. Nintendo says it supports:

  • Voice chat for up to 12 people;
  • Screen sharing for up to four people; and
  • Video chat for up to four people when a compatible USB-C camera is connected.

Switch 2 has a built-in microphone, so the camera is not required for voice chat or screen sharing. The Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is relevant only if you specifically want face-to-face video chat or camera-enabled software. It should be treated as an optional accessory, not a required part of the console purchase.

As of the August 13, 2026 research date, Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for GameChat. Nintendo’s open-access period ran through March 31, 2026, so buyers should not assume that GameChat remains free to use without the subscription.

Hidden costs for Switch 1 owners moving to Switch 2

Backward-compatible games do not mean every part of an existing Switch setup transfers unchanged. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance identifies several important exceptions.

Existing Switch item Switch 2 behavior Planning implication
Original Joy-Con controllers Can pair wirelessly, but cannot attach to the Switch 2 console. Useful for wireless multiplayer, but not a complete replacement for attached Switch 2 controls.
Original Switch dock Not compatible with Switch 2. Do not assume your old dock can serve as the TV-mode dock.
Original HDMI cable Not compatible for maximizing Switch 2 performance. Use the appropriate Switch 2 TV connection equipment for supported output.
Original AC adapter Can charge the console directly, but cannot power Switch 2 TV mode because of different power output. It may be useful as a charger, but not as the complete TV setup power supply.
Standard Switch microSD card Not the required storage standard for Switch 2 game data. Budget for microSD Express storage if internal capacity is insufficient.

Some accessories may transfer, but the safe assumption is not “everything works.” Check the exact accessory and the way you intend to use it—handheld, docked, wireless, or attached—before assigning value to your existing setup.

Who should buy Switch 2?

  • First-time Nintendo hybrid-console buyers: You get the current platform rather than starting with aging hardware.
  • Players who want newer releases: Switch 2 is the safer choice for Switch 2-exclusive games and software designed around the newer system.
  • Digital buyers: The 256GB internal storage and microSD Express support are more suitable for a growing download library.
  • Handheld players who want a larger, sharper screen: The 7.9-inch 1080p display is a substantial change from the original Switch family’s smaller panels.
  • TV players who care about supported performance improvements: Faster loading, HDR, and higher-resolution or higher-refresh-rate modes are available in compatible games and displays.
  • Social players: GameChat, screen sharing, and optional video chat are exclusive to Switch 2.
  • Committed buyers watching the price: If you already know you want Switch 2, the announced $50 increase makes a near-MSRP purchase before September 1 financially preferable.

Who should still buy Switch 1 or Switch OLED?

  • OLED enthusiasts: You specifically prefer OLED contrast and the panel’s visual character over Switch 2’s larger LCD.
  • Discount shoppers: A retailer offers a meaningful discount—not merely a nominal $50 difference from Switch 2.
  • Legacy-library players: You mainly want existing Switch games and do not care about Switch 2-exclusive software or newer performance features.
  • Second-console buyers: The console is for a child or household use where the latest hardware is unnecessary.
  • Owners with a very specific accessory setup: You want to avoid replacing hardware, and you have confirmed that your games and accessories meet your needs. Remember that Switch 2 does not accept every old accessory in every role.

Do not choose Switch 1 solely because it is “cheaper” without checking the actual current price. Nintendo’s $399.99 OLED listing leaves a narrow gap against the current Switch 2 MSRP, and the original Switch family has already experienced U.S. price adjustments. The older console becomes the value choice only when the real street price—not its age or reputation—makes it clearly cheaper for your use case.

Nintendo Switch – Neon Red and Neon Blue Joy-Con (Renewed)
  • One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
  • Two players can each take one
  • Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
  • Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

A simple buying decision

  1. Decide whether you want the current platform. If Switch 2-exclusive games, GameChat, better loading, or newer hardware support matter, skip Switch 1.
  2. Check the U.S. price and date. A committed buyer should compare the available Switch 2 price with the $449.99 pre-September MSRP and the $499.99 MSRP beginning September 1, 2026.
  3. Choose based on screen preference. Pick Switch 2 for size, resolution, HDR, and supported VRR; pick OLED only if OLED contrast is the priority and the discount is worthwhile.
  4. Price the storage honestly. Digital-heavy Switch 2 buyers may need a microSD Express card. Do not count a standard Switch microSD card as a guaranteed transfer.
  5. Audit your accessories. Original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly, but the original dock is not compatible, the old HDMI cable is not suitable for maximizing Switch 2 performance, and the old AC adapter cannot power Switch 2 TV mode.
  6. Check your games. Confirm compatibility for important Switch titles and look up whether a Switch 2 Edition, free update, or paid upgrade pack applies.
  7. Buy the camera only for video chat. GameChat voice chat and screen sharing do not require a camera, although Nintendo Switch Online membership is required at the time of publication.

Final verdict

Buy Switch 2 before September 1, 2026 if you have already decided to buy it and can find it near $449.99. The announced move to $499.99 gives committed U.S. buyers a concrete reason to act before the deadline.

For everyone else, the answer is more conditional. Choose Switch OLED when its display is the feature you value most and the actual discount is substantial. Choose the original Switch only for a low-cost, existing-library-focused use case. For a new buyer who wants Nintendo’s current software, larger handheld display, better storage, improved performance potential, and Switch 2-exclusive features, Switch 2 is the more durable purchase even after the price rises.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Nintendo Switch 2 play all Nintendo Switch 1 games?

No. Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital Switch games, but Nintendo warns that some games may not be supported or fully compatible. Check important titles individually, especially those that depend on unusual accessories or peripherals.

Do regular Nintendo Switch microSD cards work on Switch 2?

No. Switch 2 requires microSD Express cards for saving or loading Switch 2 digital games and save data. Nintendo says cards up to 2TB are supported. A standard microSD card from Switch 1 should not be treated as the correct Switch 2 game-storage solution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera required for GameChat?

No. Switch 2 has a built-in microphone, so a camera is not required for GameChat voice chat or screen sharing. A compatible USB-C camera is needed for GameChat video chat, which supports up to four people on camera.

How much will Switch 2 cost after September 1, 2026?

Nintendo says the U.S. MSRP will increase from $449.99 to $499.99 on September 1, 2026, before sales tax. Retailers may set their own prices and offer different promotions or bundles.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: If you already want Switch 2, buy near the current $449.99 U.S. MSRP before September 1, 2026, when Nintendo’s announced price becomes $499.99. Buy Switch OLED instead only for its OLED screen or a genuinely large discount; choose Switch 1 for a narrow legacy-library or second-console use case.
