The clearest verdict on the pre-launch talk is that several central features—magnetically attached Joy-Con 2 controllers, mouse controls in compatible games, and backward compatibility with many original Switch games—became official. Compatibility is not universal, and expandable game storage requires a microSD Express card. Nintendo’s announced game dates and regional offers are time-sensitive, so treat them as dated plans rather than permanent promises.
What was confirmed about Switch 2?
Nintendo announced Switch 2 on April 2, 2025, with a release date of June 5, 2025. The announcement described a new system with Joy-Con 2 controllers that attach magnetically and can function as mouse controllers in compatible games. Nintendo also introduced GameChat, accessed using the controllers’ C button. These are confirmed product features, not merely pre-launch speculation.

Nintendo’s US launch announcement listed a suggested retail price of $449.99. In Japan, Nintendo listed the Japanese-language system at 49,980 yen. Those are region-specific launch-era prices, not confirmation of current retail pricing. Check local retailers for present availability and prices. Nintendo of America’s launch announcement and Nintendo’s Japanese announcement give the original details.
GameChat’s launch terms have changed over time. Nintendo said it would be available without a Nintendo Switch Online membership during an open-access period through March 31, 2026, after which membership would be required. That free-access period has ended; do not assume GameChat is currently available without a membership.

Can I play my old Switch games on Switch 2?
Yes, Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Nintendo’s support page puts the qualification plainly: “Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released on the Nintendo Switch system.” The word “compatible” matters: Nintendo warns that some games are unsupported or may not work fully. For a third-party title, Nintendo directs players to check with its publisher.
Before buying or upgrading a specific game, check Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility guidance. The general backward-compatibility statement does not guarantee that every original Switch title, feature, or peripheral works exactly as it did on the earlier system.
Do I need a new microSD card for Switch 2?
For expandable game storage, use a microSD Express card. A conventional microSD card is not supported for that purpose on Switch 2. Nintendo says a conventional microSD card can still be used to view screenshots and videos captured on Nintendo Switch, but that does not make it a substitute for Switch 2 game storage. See Nintendo’s storage and accessory compatibility guidance before choosing a card.
Which original Switch accessories carry over?
Some original hardware remains useful, but wireless use is different from physical compatibility. Nintendo says original Joy-Con controllers and the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can be used wirelessly, with some limitations. The original Switch dock is incompatible with Switch 2. Several original Joy-Con grips, straps, charging products, and wheels also do not work with Joy-Con 2.

Check Nintendo’s accessory compatibility list for the exact accessory before reusing or buying it. A controller that connects wirelessly is not necessarily a fit for the new system’s attachment, charging, or game-specific features.

Which Switch 2 rumors were true?
The confirmed features settle broad questions about the console, but this source record does not establish a complete, independently verified history of individual leaks: who first reported each claim, its exact original wording, or how it changed before launch. It would be misleading to label a list of unattributed rumors “true” or “false.”
- Magnetic controller attachment: confirmed in Nintendo’s launch announcement; Joy-Con 2 attach magnetically.
- Mouse-style controls: confirmed as a Joy-Con 2 capability in compatible games, not a promise that every game supports mouse input.
- Backward compatibility: confirmed for compatible physical and digital Switch games, with exceptions and possible limitations.
- Storage-card expectations: Switch 2 game storage requires microSD Express; a conventional microSD card is not an equivalent option.
Claims beyond those official facts need their original reporting source and date before they can be responsibly classified as confirmed, disproved, or unresolved.
Quick Recap
What should buyers keep in mind?
- Use the launch prices only as historical reference points; they do not establish what a console costs in a particular store today.
- Check a specific Switch game and accessory against Nintendo’s compatibility guidance instead of assuming complete carryover.
- Buy microSD Express, not a conventional microSD card, for expandable Switch 2 game storage.
- Verify release windows, membership requirements, and bundle eligibility on current official pages; each can depend on date or region.
