What to try next depends on whether the problem is a stick, button, motion control, or a fault limited to one game.
First, identify the controller and the symptom
Check whether you’re using Joy-Con or a Pro Controller, and whether the issue involves power, wireless connection, buttons, sticks, or motion controls. Note whether the Joy-Con is attached to the console or being used wirelessly. These clues help distinguish a setup or game-specific issue from a controller fault.
Check charge and pairing
Pro Controller status lights
On a Pro Controller, player LEDs that blink and then stay lit indicate that it is charged and paired. If the LEDs briefly sequence and turn off, the controller needs pairing; if no LEDs appear, charge it. Follow Nintendo’s Pro Controller pairing instructions for your setup.
Wake or reset a controller that is already paired
Press SYNC once, then press another button to wake or reset the controller’s connection. If it still will not connect, check Nintendo’s Pro Controller connection troubleshooting; instructions and service options may vary by region.

- Introducing Joy-Con, controllers that make new kinds of gaming possible, for use with Nintendo Switch.
- The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun.
- Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip.
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
- Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.
Update the console and controller
Check that the console has the latest system update. Then, where the option is available, open System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Update Controllers. Nintendo includes system and controller update checks in its controller troubleshooting guidance.
Test whether the console registers the inputs
Open System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Test Input Devices → Test Controller Buttons. Press the buttons you’re troubleshooting and check whether the screen registers them. Nintendo notes that this test does not cover HOME, Capture, POWER, Volume, or SYNC, so those buttons not appearing in the test does not establish that they are faulty. See Nintendo’s button troubleshooting steps.

If a control stick is not responding correctly
Calibrate the stick
Open System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Calibrate Control Sticks and follow the prompts. Nintendo’s calibration guide also covers motion controls. If calibration does not seem to take effect, put the console to sleep and wake it, or press SYNC once and then another controller button.
Check for a game-specific problem
If the stick issue occurs in only one game, check that game’s controller compatibility and in-game control settings, then try another compatible game. A problem confined to one title does not, by itself, show that the controller hardware has failed.

Reduce wireless distance or interference
If the problem occurs while playing wirelessly, try closer to the console and reduce possible wireless interference. For Pro Controller stick issues, Nintendo also recommends testing a wired connection where supported; see its Pro Controller stick troubleshooting.
If buttons do not work as expected
Check custom button mapping
A wrench icon on the controller display indicates custom button mapping. Review the mapping in the console settings and restore the default layout if it is not what you intended. Nintendo’s button troubleshooting guide also recommends updating the controller, resetting it, testing the buttons, and checking whether the issue is limited to a game.
