Start with the setting that addresses your specific difficulty: remap a button that is awkward to reach, practise camera and movement separately if jumps are hard to judge, or check calibration if a stick or motion input behaves unexpectedly. On Nintendo Switch, button remapping works across games, but there is no single layout that suits every player or platformer.
Choose an adjustment for the problem you’re having
| What feels difficult | What to try |
|---|---|
| A button is hard to reach or press repeatedly | Remap it to a supported button you can use more comfortably. |
| You struggle to judge a jump or route | Move the right stick to inspect the landing area, and practise camera movement separately from character movement. |
| A stick or motion input seems inaccurate | Check the game’s settings, then follow Nintendo’s controller calibration steps. |
| A motion action is difficult | Look in that game’s controls for a button alternative. |
| The game’s challenge or recovery is the obstacle | Check for a game-level assist option, such as Assist Mode in Super Mario Odyssey. |
How do I remap buttons on Nintendo Switch?
Use the console’s button-mapping menu: System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Change Button Mapping. Select the controller, choose Change, adjust or disable inputs, and confirm. You can save custom configurations as presets.

Mapping is supported for Joy-Con and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller; Nintendo Switch Lite buttons can also be remapped. The change applies in nearly all console scenarios, including games. Nintendo notes that “Your custom button configurations are saved on the Nintendo Switch system, not on the controller.” That means the mapping does not travel with the controller to another Switch. Nintendo’s FAQ says up to five custom configurations can be stored per supported controller on one system. Nintendo Support: How to Change the Button Mapping on Nintendo Switch.
Make a mapping solve one concrete friction point
Try remapping when a specific button is difficult to reach or when a repeated action is uncomfortable. Choose a replacement that is easy to remember, then test it in a low-stakes area before relying on it during a difficult jump or boss encounter. Since the game still receives the mapped input, check its control display if an action no longer behaves as expected.

Can I swap the control sticks on Switch?
The stick-input option can swap the left- and right-stick input sides. It does not let you turn stick directions into button inputs. If you want to return to the standard layout, open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Change Button Mapping again and restore the default mapping or select the relevant saved configuration.
Make camera and movement easier to coordinate
When a jump is difficult to read, use the right stick to inspect the landing area before moving. Practise controlling the character and adjusting the camera as separate actions first; combine them once each feels predictable. Nintendo offers these kinds of control and camera tips for Super Mario 3D All-Stars, so treat them as useful practice ideas rather than a universal camera prescription. If a stick or motion input appears inaccurate, first check whether the game has its own control settings. You can also use Nintendo’s calibration process under System Settings > Controllers and Sensors: follow the on-screen instructions and verify the result afterward. What can make Super Mario Odyssey easier?
Super Mario Odyssey includes Assist Mode. A 2022 feature from Nintendo Life describes it as providing extra health, health recovery while standing still, recovery to safe ground after falling into a deadly hazard, protection from drowning, and story-guidance arrows. The same feature notes that motion controls are used for some actions, with button alternatives for most moves. These are Odyssey-specific details, not a template for every Switch game.
