If a Nintendo Switch eShop purchase is not downloading, first determine whether the order completed. Check the purchasing account’s balance and Nintendo’s service-status information, then confirm the console is online, close any game that may be pausing the download, refresh download progress, and check storage. If eShop says Purchased but you cannot find the game or DLC, use the purchasing account’s Virtual Game Card from the HOME menu.
The sequence below separates a failed transaction from a delayed download, a full memory card, and content that is owned but not currently loaded.

1. Confirm that the purchase went through
Check the account balance
Open Nintendo eShop with the Nintendo Account that made the order and look at its eShop balance. Nintendo’s missing-game guidance says that if the balance remains unchanged, the order did not go through. In that case, there is no download to resume; check the transaction details and try again only after confirming that the service is available.
If the balance changed, look at the HOME menu for a download icon and allow an active download to finish before assuming the game is missing. A purchase can be complete while the installation is still waiting in the background.
Check for maintenance or an outage
Open Nintendo’s network maintenance and service-status information and look for an outage affecting Nintendo eShop or downloads. Maintenance can delay delivery even when your console and account are configured correctly. Wait until the listed incident is over, then restart the basic download checks rather than repeatedly placing the order.

Service-status wording and interface labels can change. Use the status information displayed for your region and the Switch family, not an old screenshot or an unrelated platform notice.
2. Make sure the console is online
A stalled purchase cannot progress without an active internet connection. On the Switch, verify that the console is connected to the intended wireless network and that other online features can reach Nintendo’s services. If the connection has dropped, reconnect before attempting a progress refresh.
Once the connection is active, save your game and close it. The console can pause some downloads while software is being played, so a game left running is a common reason a purchase appears stuck.

- Compatible with Top Devices: Perfectly compatible with Nintendo Switch (Not 2), Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Android phones, tablets, and even retro game emulators. Includes a full-size SD adapter for seamless use with laptops, handheld consoles, and compatible card readers.
- Smooth 4K/HD Recording & Playback: Supports stable 4K UHD and 1080P Full HD recording and playback, ideal for gameplay footage, game stream content capture, or immersive in-game video rendering.
- Battle-Tested Durability: Engineered for long sessions and intense environments. Waterproof, shockproof, temperature-resistant, X-ray safe — designed to withstand accidental drops, outdoor use, and frequent device swapping.
- Actual Capacity: Storage may be smaller than the labeled capacity because manufacturers use the decimal system (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) , operating systems display storage using the binary system (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). This is a normal industry practice and does not affect performance.
3. Resume a download that is paused or stuck
Close the software that is running
- Save your progress in the game or application currently open.
- Press the HOME button.
- Highlight the running software, choose the close option, and confirm. Do not remove the game card or power off while unsaved work is at risk.
- Return to the HOME menu and check whether the download icon begins moving.
Closing the software removes the pause condition described in Nintendo’s stuck-download guidance. It does not erase the purchase or save data.
Use Update Download Progress
- From HOME, select the user page for the account using the console.
- Choose User Settings.
- Scroll down through the settings list.
- Select Update Download Progress.
- Wait while the Switch reconnects to the service and checks the download.
This refresh is intended for downloads that do not start, are paused, or appear stuck. If the bar still does not move, restart the console and wait for it to reconnect online before checking again.
Give the console time in sleep mode
Nintendo’s missing-game guidance provides a later, wait-based step. Place a regular Switch or Switch OLED in its dock, or connect the AC adapter to a Switch Lite. Put the console into sleep mode for up to two hours. This gives the download process time to begin without a game occupying the system.
Use this step after confirming the transaction, network connection, and progress refresh. Sleep mode cannot fix a purchase that never completed, an account that does not own the item, or storage that is already full.
4. Check storage before changing accounts or networks
Compare free space with the title’s requirement
Nintendo states that storage requirements vary by game. Check the game’s eShop listing or physical packaging for the required space, then compare that figure with the free space shown on your console. Updates and downloadable content can require additional room beyond the initial game data.
A failed storage check can prevent the download even when the order and internet connection are fine. Read the exact message on screen and note whether the console identifies system memory or a microSD card as the destination.

- Store an entire game collection, plus screenshots and videos, with up to 64GB of additional memory (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less)
Free space without touching save data
Remove or archive software you no longer use, and delete other unneeded software data when the console offers that option. Review the result after each change so you know how much space was recovered before retrying the download.
Save data remains in system memory. It cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card as ordinary software data can, so do not delete save data as a first response to a storage warning.
Use a compatible microSD card when necessary
Nintendo supports expanding available storage with a compatible microSD card. Software data, updates, downloadable content, and screenshots can reside in system memory or on the card. Confirm that the card is compatible with your Switch model and that the game’s listed requirement fits the available capacity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA card addresses a capacity problem only. It will not repair a failed transaction, restore ownership to the wrong Nintendo Account, or make an unavailable network service respond. Do not buy one until the storage branch is confirmed.
5. Resolve the “Purchased” but missing problem
Use the Nintendo Account that paid
When eShop displays Purchased, Nintendo says the Nintendo Account currently browsing already owns the game or DLC. If several users share the console, switch to the user connected to the account that made the purchase. A different user may not see the same ownership record.
Before opening account menus, check the HOME menu and All Software. The title may already be installed but not visible in the first row of icons. Searching All Software avoids repeating a purchase that is already on the console.

- SPACE FOR MORE. With expansive capacities up to 1.5TB[1], capture and store hours of Full HD video[4], movies, music, games, photos, and podcasts.
- MOVE FILES FAST. Use your card with the SANDISK QuickFlow microSD UHS-I Card USB-A Reader[6] to achieve up to 195MB/s[2] read speeds [128GB-1.5TB models] and offload your content fast.
- LOAD APPS IN A SNAP. Rated A1[3], the SANDISK Ultra microSD card is optimized for faster app launch and overall app performance.
- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
Load the Virtual Game Card
- Open Virtual Game Cards from the HOME menu.
- Select the user whose Nintendo Account made the purchase.
- Select the missing game or DLC from that user’s list.
- Choose Load on This System and wait for the operation to finish.
- Return to HOME and check All Software and the title’s download state.
Nintendo moved redownloads of purchased games and DLC from eShop to Virtual Game Cards beginning April 30, 2025. Therefore, older instructions that send you to an eShop redownload menu may no longer match the current Switch flow. The HOME-menu Virtual Game Card route is the relevant path for the Switch-compatible directions.

Nintendo’s support instructions say to check whether the Virtual Game Card is hidden. Review the hidden-card or hidden-software controls and unhide the item if it appears there. Interface wording can differ by system software version, but the goal is to restore the card to the purchasing user’s Virtual Game Cards list.
If the card remains absent, check the eShop details page for the option that restores Virtual Game Cards, then reopen the HOME menu and check the list again. If the item is still missing, use Nintendo’s missing digital content support route rather than buying the title a second time.
6. Keep these failure types separate
Several fixes sound similar but solve different problems:
- Transaction failure: an unchanged eShop balance indicates that the order did not go through. A network refresh cannot turn that failed order into ownership.
- Service or connection delay: an outage, maintenance window, or lost internet connection can prevent a completed purchase from starting to download.
- Paused progress: software being played can pause downloads. Closing it and choosing Update Download Progress addresses this state.
- Insufficient capacity: the title cannot be written when the available system or microSD storage is below the requirement.
- Ownership or visibility: Purchased content can be owned by another user, installed but hidden in All Software, or absent from the visible Virtual Game Card list.
Following these branches in order prevents a storage purchase from being used to solve an account problem, and prevents repeated purchases when the original order already succeeded.
7. A complete recovery sequence
Use this checklist when you are unsure which branch applies:
Best Value
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
- Open eShop with the Nintendo Account that made the purchase.
- Check whether the eShop balance changed. If it did not, treat the order as incomplete and check Nintendo’s service status before trying again.
- Look for the download icon on HOME and allow an active download to finish.
- Confirm the console is online.
- Save and close any running software.
- Open the user page, choose User Settings, scroll down, and select Update Download Progress.
- Restart the Switch if progress still does not move, then wait for it to reconnect.
- Check the game’s listed storage requirement and the console’s free system and microSD space.
- Archive or delete unused software/data if space is low, remembering that save data is stored in system memory.
- From HOME, open Virtual Game Cards with the purchasing user and choose the item followed by Load on This System.
- Check hidden cards or hidden software if the item is not listed.
- As a final waiting step, dock the console or connect AC power on Switch Lite and use sleep mode for up to two hours.
Stop and contact Nintendo if the purchase account was charged but the item remains absent after these checks, or if the console displays an error you cannot resolve from the relevant support instructions.
8. What to record before contacting Nintendo
Nintendo’s support portal offers chat, text/SMS, a help ticket, and phone contact. The fastest conversation is usually the one that starts with specific evidence rather than a general description that the game will not download.
Have these details ready:
- The Nintendo Account and console user that made the purchase.
- Whether the eShop balance changed or another transaction record shows a charge.
- Whether a download icon appears on HOME and what its progress does.
- What appears in HOME, All Software, and Virtual Game Cards.
- Whether the card is hidden or the item is shown as hidden software.
- The free space in system memory and on the microSD card, if one is installed.
- The exact error code or wording displayed by eShop or the HOME menu.
- Whether the console is a Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED, and whether it is docked or running on AC power during the check.
Support can identify the account and content state from those details. The available guidance does not promise a refund or guarantee that an order will be restored, so do not assume either outcome before Nintendo reviews the transaction.

9. When the download is simply delayed
A completed purchase does not always produce an immediate HOME icon. If the balance changed, the account is correct, the console is online, and the download icon is present, leave the console connected and let the process run. Close active software, refresh progress once, and use sleep mode with power connected if Nintendo’s waiting step is appropriate.
There is no reliable universal download-time estimate in Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance. Speed depends on the connection, the size of the game and updates, and service conditions. Treat the progress indicator and any error message as more useful evidence than an assumed number of minutes.
10. Avoid common wrong turns
- Do not repurchase immediately when eShop says Purchased. Check the purchasing user’s Virtual Game Cards first.
- Do not assume Purchased means installed. Ownership and local installation are separate states.
- Do not format or remove a microSD card before checking the account, service, and storage branches; doing so can create a second problem without fixing the first.
- Do not delete save data to make room. Nintendo keeps save data in system memory, while software and updates can use system memory or microSD.
- Do not leave a game running while diagnosing a paused download.
- Do not rely on older eShop redownload directions published before April 30, 2025; use Virtual Game Cards from HOME.
These precautions preserve the information needed for support and keep a temporary download delay from becoming an avoidable data or account problem.
