Nintendo Switch Game Buying Guide: New, Used, or Digital?

A practical guide to choosing a new or used Nintendo Switch game card versus a digital eShop copy, including sharing, resale, account rules, saves, and buying checks.

Choose a physical Nintendo Switch game if you want a copy you can hand to someone else or potentially resell; choose digital if you prefer launching games without swapping cards and are comfortable keeping purchases tied to the Nintendo Account that bought them. A used card works like a new card for ordinary card-based play, but its condition, included items, edition, and price need checking. Compare the exact release and current price before deciding: there is no established rule that new, used, or digital copies are usually cheapest.

Should you buy Nintendo Switch games physical or digital?

The main difference is how you access and pass on a copy. A physical game card is a portable item: insert it into the console where you want to play, then remove it when you are done. A digital purchase is associated with the Nintendo Account that bought it and is managed under Nintendo’s virtual game card and online-license features. It is not a standalone game card that can be sold or transferred to another person’s account.

For a physical copy, the card must be available in the console whenever you play that game. For a digital copy, there is no card to swap, but access depends on the account and console arrangement. Nintendo’s current support guidance describes loading virtual game cards to consoles and also describes online-license arrangements for some other console setups. The exact rules and availability can vary by region and arrangement, so check Nintendo’s instructions for the consoles and country you use before relying on a particular way to play.

Use these priorities to decide:

  • Choose a physical card if you value handing the game to another player, keeping a tangible copy, or having the option to resell it, subject to local rules and the buyer’s needs.
  • Choose digital if you value not swapping cards and are comfortable with the purchase remaining tied to the purchasing Nintendo Account and subject to Nintendo’s access rules.
  • Consider a used card if the condition, edition, included items, return terms, and total price make sense compared with a new card and the digital version of the same release.

These are format trade-offs, not reliable price predictions. Prices and availability differ by game, region, seller, and date.

New, used, and digital copies compared

Option How you access it Sharing or resale What to check before buying
New physical game card Insert the card into the console in use; the card must be present to play. The card can be handed to another player and may be resold, subject to local rules. Exact title and edition, current price, included content, and whether that particular release requires additional downloads.
Used physical game card Works on the same card-based principle as a new copy if the card and edition work with the buyer’s console. Can be handed on or resold like other physical media, subject to local rules. Condition, seller reputation, return terms, region and edition, included case or inserts, and any bonus code’s status.
Digital eShop copy Tied to the purchasing Nintendo Account and accessed under virtual game card and online-license rules. It is not a transferable physical item. Eligible virtual game cards may be lent subject to Nintendo’s restrictions. Account ownership, console setup, possible internet requirements, storage space, current local price, and local refund terms.

Nintendo’s general support guidance explains how to use game cards, but it does not establish what is included on every specific release’s card. Do not assume that every physical edition contains all playable software without an additional download; verify the exact title and edition. The same rule applies to used listings: a seller’s description and the release’s own packaging or product information matter more than a general claim about physical games.

What you gain and give up with a physical game card

Portability and handoff

A physical card moves between consoles. Nintendo’s instructions are straightforward: insert the card into the console where you want to play. That makes lending or passing the copy to another player comparatively simple. The limitation is equally simple: only the player with access to that card can use that physical copy at a given time. If you hand it off, you will not have that card available in your own console until it comes back.

A card is also a separate item to keep track of. Before buying, consider whether you want to carry and store cards, whether you expect to switch among several games in one session, and whether you want the option of passing the copy on. Those preferences may matter more than small price differences, which should be checked for the exact title rather than assumed.

New versus used physical copies

“Used” describes the listing and condition, not a different Nintendo license type. A used game card follows the same basic card-based play process as a new one. The meaningful differences are the state of the item, what comes with it, the seller’s terms, and the price. A lower used sticker price may not be a better purchase after shipping, missing items, or a difficult return policy are taken into account.

Check whether the listing is for the card alone or includes the case and inserts. If a bonus or download code is advertised, ask whether it is unused rather than assuming that a code included in a used package still works. Codes may be single-use. Also distinguish the exact edition: different editions of a title may have different included content, and a listing that merely names the game may not make that distinction clear.

Physical does not guarantee a complete offline package

Card contents and download requirements are release-specific. Ask whether the particular game card contains the playable software or whether the release requires a substantial download. Do not generalize from one game to all Switch cards. If avoiding a large download is important, verify the exact edition before paying; a listing’s use of the word “physical” alone does not answer that question.

How digital purchases and virtual game cards work

A digital game belongs to the Nintendo Account used to buy it. Nintendo says digital purchases are tied to that account, and its support material describes games as being managed through virtual game cards and online-license features. This means that a digital purchase is not a file or card that can simply be transferred to another person’s account when you are done with it.

Nintendo’s current guidance describes virtual game cards loaded on consoles associated with the account. Users on a console with a virtual game card loaded can play the game. Nintendo UK’s guide describes pairing up to two consoles for virtual game cards and moving a virtual game card between those consoles. The Americas and Australia support pages also describe online-license arrangements for other console setups. Do not infer from these general descriptions that every console can play every purchase at the same time, offline, or under every user profile: the permitted arrangement depends on Nintendo’s current rules and the way the consoles are configured.

Before buying digitally, make sure the purchasing account is the one you intend to keep using and that you understand how your consoles will access its games. If a household shares consoles, consider which console will have the virtual game card loaded, who will use it, and whether the account’s other console arrangement suits the way people play. Consult Nintendo’s current instructions for your region and exact setup rather than relying on assumptions about older account-sharing explanations.

Digital convenience and trade-offs

Digital can be convenient when you want to launch a game without finding and inserting its card. It can also make it easier to keep a collection associated with one account. In exchange, you give up the straightforward handoff and resale options of a physical card. Eligible virtual game cards can be lent under Nintendo’s conditions, but that lending is not equivalent to handing over a card while keeping your own access.

Digital games also occupy storage on the console or storage configured for downloads. Check the game’s listing and your available storage before purchasing if space is tight; the supplied official support pages establish the account and license framework, not a universal download size for every game. Digital access also makes local purchase and refund terms important. Those terms differ by country, so review the eShop terms applicable to your account’s region.

Can you share or lend a Switch game?

Sharing a physical card

For a physical copy, the basic handoff is to give the other player the card so they can insert it into their console. The card can only be used where it is present, so a single copy cannot be in two players’ consoles at once. If you may want to play at the same time as the person borrowing it, one physical copy does not provide both players with simultaneous access.

Lending a digital virtual game card

Nintendo’s UK Virtual Game Card Guide says lending is limited to members of the lender’s Nintendo Account family group. The consoles must be nearby and online for the lending and borrowing setup. A person can borrow one game at a time, a loan lasts up to 14 days, and the game automatically returns after that period. The lender cannot play the game while it is lent. These are details from Nintendo UK’s guide; readers should check the instructions and availability for their own region and current console software.

These conditions make digital lending more managed than a physical handoff. Before choosing digital because you expect to share, confirm that the intended borrower is eligible and that the temporary loss of access works for you. If you need to keep playing while someone else has a copy, do not assume that either a single physical card or a lent virtual game card will provide simultaneous access.

What happens to save data if you change consoles or formats?

Save data is not stored on the game card. Nintendo states: “Game save data is associated with your Nintendo Account and the console, not the game card.” That distinction matters if you buy a different copy, lend a card, or move between consoles: possession of the card is not what determines where your progress is kept.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nintendo says save data can be transferred directly from one console to another. A direct transfer removes the save from the source console, so it is a move rather than a way to leave the same save in both places. Nintendo Switch Online members can use Save Data Cloud for supported games. Cloud support is not universal; check the individual game’s support information instead of assuming that every title can be backed up this way.

When changing consoles, check the save-transfer instructions for the game and account before starting. If you rely on cloud backup, verify that the specific game supports it and that your membership and account setup meet Nintendo’s requirements. Changing from a physical card to a digital copy, or the reverse, does not itself transfer saves between consoles.

Used Switch game buying checklist

  1. Confirm the exact game and edition. Make sure the listing is for the Nintendo Switch release you want, not another platform or a different edition. Check region details if they are relevant to the listing and your console.
  2. Read the condition and inclusions. Determine whether the seller is offering the card alone or also the original case and inserts. Look for a clear condition description and seller reputation.
  3. Verify bonus codes. If the listing includes a bonus or download code, ask whether it is unused. A used package does not establish that a single-use code remains redeemable.
  4. Check download requirements. Ask whether that exact release uses a conventional game card containing the playable software or requires an additional substantial download. This varies by title; do not infer the answer from another game.
  5. Compare the full current cost. Compare the used listing with the new physical and digital versions of the same game and edition. Include shipping and consider the seller’s return terms, not just the displayed price.
  6. Decide what a return is worth. If the description is unclear or the card’s condition is uncertain, a seller’s return policy can matter. Confirm the terms before purchase rather than expecting an unconditional return.

No comparative price data establishes that used copies are usually cheaper than new physical or digital editions. The price decision has to be made title by title, in the buyer’s region, at the time of purchase.

Are digital Switch games refundable or transferable?

Do not treat one country’s refund policy as a worldwide rule. Nintendo Japan’s eShop notice says purchased download products cannot be returned, refunded, or transferred between Nintendo Accounts, even if they have not been downloaded or used. That is a Japan-region statement, not a universal summary of Nintendo eShop policy. Check the terms for the country associated with your account before buying, especially if refund eligibility is important to the decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The account-transfer point is also central to format choice: Nintendo’s support guidance says downloadable purchases are tied to the account that bought them. A digital purchase is therefore not a resalable copy in the same way as a physical card. Do not buy digitally expecting to move the game to another account later or sell it as a separate item.

A practical decision path

  • You want to hand off or potentially resell the copy: favor a physical card, after checking edition, condition, and local rules.
  • You want to avoid swapping cards: consider digital, after confirming account ownership, console access, storage, and local eShop terms.
  • You are considering a used listing mainly for the price: compare the exact used, new physical, and digital editions, including shipping and the value of any missing items.
  • You plan to share with family: decide whether a card handoff or the more limited virtual game card lending setup fits your schedule. For digital lending, verify family-group eligibility, setup requirements, and the temporary loss of access.
  • You are moving a save between consoles: plan the save transfer or supported cloud backup separately from the format purchase; the game card does not hold the save.

For current mechanics, Nintendo’s Americas support guide to playing games across multiple consoles, UK Virtual Game Card Guide, and Australia digital purchase guidance explain account access, virtual game cards, saves, and related rules. Nintendo Japan’s eShop notice is the source for the Japan-specific refund and account-transfer statement.
