Downloaded games also work offline, although Nintendo requires the console to verify membership online at least once every seven days.
Your classic-game save remains on the console if the membership expires. You cannot use Nintendo’s Save Data Cloud backups while unsubscribed, but Nintendo says prior cloud backups can be recovered by resubscribing within 180 days. Moving a save to another Switch therefore depends on Nintendo Account-linked cloud support and software compatibility; it is not a universal cartridge-style transfer.

Which Nintendo Switch Online plan includes GBA games?
Nintendo’s membership matrix lists Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics as a benefit of both Expansion Pack Individual and Expansion Pack Family memberships. It is not included with the standard Individual or standard Family tiers.

The service provides access for as long as the qualifying membership is active; it does not give you separate ownership of the included games. If you cancel or allow the membership to expire, access to the GBA library and its online features stops until you renew.

Individual or Family Expansion Pack?
Individual is designed for one account. Family covers the accounts in a Nintendo Account family group, up to eight in total. The practical choice is whether several people in the same family group will use Nintendo Switch Online benefits: one person generally needs Individual, while multiple participating accounts may make Family more suitable. Nintendo’s service rules, account relationships, and regional pricing determine the actual value, so check the membership screen for your country before buying.
What multiplayer modes do GBA games support?
Nintendo’s GBA software listing gives the platform these capabilities:

Those figures describe the GBA service at platform level, not a promise that every game offers every mode. The individual title controls whether multiplayer is available and how many players it accepts. Nintendo’s highlighted examples include The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga; verify the current catalog and each game’s feature list because the library is curated and can change.

Playing with people in the same room
For local wireless, each player uses a compatible console within wireless range. Open the GBA app, start a supported game, and select its multiplayer or local-wireless option. The exact menu wording can differ by game and app version. Every console needs the relevant game access, and the title may impose additional pairing or setup steps.

Playing online
To use online multiplayer, open a supported game in the GBA app and choose its multiplayer or online option. Nintendo requires an active Expansion Pack membership for access to the GBA library and its online functions. Each participating account must have the required access, and the game itself must implement online play. A standard Nintendo Switch Online membership cannot substitute for Expansion Pack access.
Can you play the GBA app offline?
Yes. Download the GBA Nintendo Classics software while you have an active Expansion Pack membership, then launch downloaded games without a continuous internet connection. Nintendo Australia’s FAQ says the console must still connect online to verify membership every seven days. Think of this as periodic authorization rather than permanent offline ownership.
- While online, open Nintendo eShop and download the Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics software included with Expansion Pack.
- Launch the app once so the console can validate your membership and finish any required software update.
- For travel or another offline period, start a downloaded game before leaving and keep the app installed.
- Reconnect the Switch to the internet within seven days so Nintendo can verify the active membership. If verification cannot occur, access may be blocked until the check completes.
Offline play does not extend after the membership ends. The seven-day check confirms that the qualifying membership is still active; it is not a grace period after expiration.
What happens to a GBA save when Nintendo Switch Online expires?
Nintendo distinguishes the save stored for the classic game on your console from Save Data Cloud backup access. If the membership expires, Nintendo says the classic-game save data remains on the console and is still available if you renew later. Your progress is therefore not automatically erased by cancellation or lapse.

While unsubscribed, however, you cannot access the GBA library, open the game to use that save, or use Nintendo Switch Online cloud-backup functions. Renew the qualifying Expansion Pack membership on the same Nintendo Account, and the installed software and retained local save can be used again, subject to the game and console still being supported.
Local classic-game save versus cloud backup

Do not delete the GBA app or its local save while unsubscribed if you intend to renew and continue on that console. The retention statement covers the save data remaining on the console; it does not promise that every deleted, overwritten, or corrupted save can be reconstructed.
Can you transfer a GBA save to another Switch?
There is no universal, cartridge-style transfer for every GBA Nintendo Classics save. Nintendo’s cloud procedure applies to compatible Switch software: Save Data Cloud backups are linked to your Nintendo Account, and you can sign in on another Switch and download a backup when the software supports the feature.

- Open the Switch data-management settings and the Save Data Cloud controls for the relevant software.
- Upload or confirm the latest backup after making sure the game is closed and the desired progress is saved.
- On the second Switch, sign in with the same Nintendo Account and install the compatible software.
- Open the Save Data Cloud controls and download the backup to that console, choosing the cloud copy carefully if local and cloud data differ.
Cloud access requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo’s service FAQ says that if a membership expires, you cannot access Save Data Cloud backups; it also says prior backups can be regained by resubscribing within 180 days. That 180-day statement concerns recovering cloud backups after renewal, not a guarantee that a local classic-game save can be moved by any other method.

Why a transfer might not work
- Wrong account: the backup belongs to the Nintendo Account that created it, not merely to the console.
- Incompatible software: Save Data Cloud availability depends on the software. A title or app without compatible backup support cannot be forced through the cloud menu.
- No active membership: expiration blocks cloud-backup access even if a backup was created previously.
- Stale backup: a backup made before your latest session will restore only the older progress.
- Conflicting local data: downloading a cloud copy can replace or conflict with data already on the destination console; check timestamps and prompts before confirming.
How the GBA library and access model work
Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics is a curated service library rather than a fixed digital purchase. Nintendo can add or revise the selection, so a list published on another date may no longer be complete. Check the current GBA app or Nintendo’s current Expansion Pack page for availability before subscribing for one particular title.
The software page was released on February 8, 2023. That date identifies the page’s launch, not a promise that the catalog or app interface has remained unchanged. Menu names and multiplayer flows can vary by title and app version, while the membership requirement remains the key access condition.

Expansion Pack is easiest to justify when the GBA library itself is the reason you want Nintendo Switch Online, or when several family-group accounts will use the broader Expansion Pack benefits. A single player interested in occasional GBA sessions should compare the Individual Expansion Pack price in their region with the number of games they expect to play and the length of time they will keep the membership active.

- Consider Expansion Pack Family if multiple accounts in one family group—up to eight—will use the service.
- Do not choose standard Individual or Family expecting GBA games; those tiers do not include the app.
- Check multiplayer requirements before buying: the specific game must support the mode you want, and online participants need qualifying access.
- Plan for periodic connectivity if you travel or play offline; the console must verify membership every seven days.
- Protect progress by keeping the local save on the original console and maintaining a current cloud backup when the software supports it.
Common problems and practical fixes
The GBA app is missing
Check that the account has Expansion Pack Individual or Expansion Pack Family, not a standard tier. Confirm that the membership is active, then open Nintendo eShop with the purchasing Nintendo Account and download the GBA software. If a family member is using Family membership, verify that the account is still in the family group.

Multiplayer options do not appear
Verify that the game supports the desired mode, update the app, and open the game’s own multiplayer or online menu rather than assuming every title exposes the same controls. For online play, confirm Expansion Pack access for each participating account. For local wireless, bring the compatible consoles within range and follow the title-specific pairing instructions.
Offline launch fails
Reconnect the console to the internet and complete the membership verification. Nintendo’s stated interval is seven days, so a long offline period can require a new check before the app will launch.
A save is not visible on a second Switch
Make sure both consoles use the same Nintendo Account, the software is compatible with Save Data Cloud, the membership is active, and a recent backup exists. If the membership expired, resubscribe; Nintendo says prior cloud backups can be recovered within 180 days. A local save that remains on the first console is not automatically copied to another console.
