Short answer: Nintendo Switch Online and playing Wii games on a Wii U are different ways to access different software. Switch Online provides membership-based access to selected classic-game apps on Nintendo Switch. A Wii U can play Wii Game Discs through its Wii Menu, but the Wii U eShop no longer accepts new purchases. If you already bought a Wii title digitally, Nintendo says you can still redownload it for the foreseeable future.
For a Wii game that you do not already own, the practical Wii U route is a physical disc. For a classic game included in your country’s current Switch Online catalog, the Switch route is a subscription rather than a permanent individual purchase.

The important distinction: these are not two stores selling the same library
“Nintendo Switch Online vs. buying Wii games on a Wii U” sounds like a direct product comparison, but the two options solve different problems.

- Nintendo Switch Online: gives an active member access to classic-game applications and the catalogs offered with the selected membership tier. It does not provide a general catalog of every Wii game.
The right choice therefore depends first on the particular game. A Wii disc cannot be substituted for a Switch Online catalog entry, and a Switch Online membership cannot be assumed to include a Wii title simply because that game was released for Nintendo hardware.

Nintendo’s support information also treats Wii U software, Wii software and Switch Online as separate systems. Do not use a statement about one platform to infer compatibility or service support on another.
Can you still buy Wii games on a Wii U?
New Wii U eShop purchases ended on March 27, 2023
Nintendo ended purchases through the Wii U eShop on March 27, 2023. The storefront no longer offers a way to buy a new Wii title, and buying Wii U eShop credit is not a solution. Nintendo’s discontinuation notice explains that unused balances could only be handled through the wallet-merging conditions and deadlines in that notice; it does not reopen the store for purchases.
This closure applies to digital purchases made now. It does not erase every title previously associated with an account.
Previously purchased games and DLC can still be redownloaded
Nintendo says owners can redownload previously purchased Wii U eShop software and downloadable content for the foreseeable future. The redownload is not a new sale: it is access to content already purchased on the relevant account.
Use Nintendo Support’s instructions titled How to Download or Redownload Content in the Nintendo eShop for Wii U when you need the current account and menu procedure. Keep the purchasing account available, and do not remove the console or account information needed to identify the original transaction before checking your redownload options.
“Redownloadable” also does not mean that new users can claim the game. If a title was never purchased on your account, the discontinued store cannot be used to acquire it now.

Physical Wii Game Discs are the practical new-to-you route
The Wii U Operations Manual documents Wii software compatibility through the Wii Menu. A person who wants a Wii title they never bought digitally can therefore look for the game’s physical Wii Game Disc and use it with a Wii U that supports Wii software.
Disc ownership is separate from Nintendo’s old digital storefront. You do not need an eShop transaction for the console to read a compatible disc, but you do need the disc, a working Wii U disc drive and the accessories required by the game.
How Wii games run on a Wii U
Start the game through the Wii Menu
Wii software on Wii U is accessed from the console’s Wii Menu environment. Insert the Wii Game Disc, open the Wii Menu and select the disc entry to launch it. The Wii U manual is the authority for compatibility; a Wii U game and a Wii game are not interchangeable categories.
Individual games can have additional requirements. Check the instructions associated with the specific disc for controllers, instruments, balance-board hardware or other accessories before buying.
The Wii U GamePad is not the Wii controller
Nintendo’s manual states that separately sold accessories are needed for Wii Menu use and that Wii software does not use the Wii U GamePad or Wii U Pro Controller as its controller. In practical terms, plan on having the appropriate Wii Remote hardware and a sensor bar, plus any title-specific accessory the game requires.

- Console: a Wii U capable of launching the Wii Menu.
- Game: the compatible Wii Game Disc.
- Pointing and motion setup: Wii Remote equipment and a sensor bar where the game requires them.
- Extra hardware: any accessory specified by the individual title.
Connecting a Wii U GamePad does not remove these requirements. It may be useful for operating the Wii U interface, but it is not a replacement for the Wii controller setup used by Wii software.

Single-player play is different from online service support
A physical disc can let you start and play supported local or single-player content without making a new eShop purchase. It does not restore Nintendo’s discontinued online communication services for Wii U software.
What Nintendo Switch Online provides
Membership access, not an individual purchase
Nintendo Switch Online is a subscription service. Its classic-game applications and their catalogs are available under the terms of an active membership; the game is not converted into a separately owned digital purchase for you.
Nintendo’s UK FAQ describes standard and Expansion Pack membership tiers. The Expansion Pack adds classic libraries for Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance and Mega Drive. The exact catalog and membership terms can vary by country and can change, so check the current Nintendo page for your region before relying on a particular game being available.

What happens when membership ends
When the membership is no longer active, access to the membership-based classic apps is governed by the service’s current terms; it is not the same as owning a Wii disc or retaining a completed eShop purchase. If continued access matters, verify the renewal status and the terms shown for your country rather than assuming a downloaded app creates permanent ownership.
Offline use has a limited authentication window
Nintendo says selected classic apps can be played for up to seven days without an internet connection. The FAQ lists NES, SNES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance and Mega Drive apps in this offline-use description. An internet connection may be needed again to launch after that period.

This is an offline-launch allowance, not a promise of permanent offline access. A Switch used away from the internet should be connected periodically so the membership check can occur.

Nintendo Switch Online and Wii U’s former online services are separate. Nintendo says online play and other functions using online communication for Wii U software ended on April 8, 2024. A current Switch Online membership does not reverse that shutdown.

Which route fits your situation?
You want one specific Wii game that is not already on your account
Look for the physical Wii Game Disc first. The Wii U eShop cannot supply a new digital copy, and Nintendo’s Switch Online information does not promise that the Wii title is in any Switch catalog.
Before buying, confirm that the disc is the correct regional or edition release for your console and that you have the required Wii controller accessories. A disc alone is not enough for games that depend on motion controls or specialized hardware.
You already bought the game digitally on Wii U
Use the Wii U eShop redownload process for the purchasing account. This is the case where Nintendo’s continuing redownload support matters. Do not spend money on eShop credit expecting to make a new purchase; the purchase function ended in 2023.

Check the Switch Online catalog for your country and compare the included systems with the games you actually want. Standard and Expansion Pack memberships do not represent the same library, and Nintendo does not publish a fixed promise that every classic release will arrive on a particular schedule.

You need long-term access without renewing a membership
A physical Wii disc is not a subscription, while Switch Online classic access is membership-based. That does not guarantee that a disc will remain playable forever: the Wii U, disc drive, television connection and accessories can still fail, and Nintendo’s discontinued online functions will not return. It does mean the access model is different from a catalog that depends on an active membership.
You care about online multiplayer
Separate local play from online communication. Wii U online play ended April 8, 2024, so buying a disc cannot restore those Nintendo services. For Switch Online, inspect the individual classic app and current membership terms; do not infer Wii U online support from the fact that the Switch service is active.

Playing a newly acquired Wii disc on Wii U
- Confirm that the item is a Wii Game Disc and that the title is compatible with Wii software on Wii U.
- Verify that the Wii U can launch the Wii Menu.
- Prepare Wii Remote hardware and a sensor bar, then add any accessory named by the game.
- Insert the disc and launch it from the Wii Menu.
- Use the game’s own instructions for controller pairing, calibration and accessory setup.
- Play local or single-player content as supported, remembering that Wii U’s former online communication services ended in 2024.
Redownloading a previous Wii U eShop purchase
- Use the Wii U and the Nintendo account or account information associated with the original purchase.
- Follow Nintendo Support’s current How to Download or Redownload Content in the Nintendo eShop for Wii U procedure.
- Choose only content that appears as previously purchased; the redownload function does not create a new purchase option.
- Allow the game or DLC to finish downloading and installing before launching it.
Using a Switch Online classic app
- Confirm that your Nintendo Switch Online membership is active and that the required tier includes the app’s system library.
- Check the current catalog for your country instead of assuming a Wii release is included.
- Install or open the relevant classic-game app on the Switch.
- Connect to the internet periodically. Nintendo’s FAQ describes up to seven days of offline play for the listed classic apps, after which reconnection may be required to launch.
- If the membership expires, review the service terms before expecting continued access.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Trying to buy eShop credit for a new Wii title
The eShop purchase cutoff makes this ineffective. Credit cannot turn a previously unowned Wii game into a new digital purchase on Wii U.

Calling a redownload a new purchase
Redownload support applies to content you already bought. It does not expand the catalog available to a new account.
Confusing Wii and Wii U games
The Wii U manual’s compatibility statement concerns Wii software launched through the Wii Menu. A Wii U game is a different release and should not be assumed to run in that environment.
Expecting the GamePad to replace a Wii Remote
Nintendo identifies the Wii U GamePad and Wii U Pro Controller as unsuitable controllers for Wii software. Prepare the separate Wii accessories required by the title.
Assuming Switch Online includes every Nintendo classic
Catalogs are selected and tier-dependent. Verify the exact game, system library, region and current membership level.
Assuming a physical disc restores online features
Disc playback and Nintendo’s online communication services are separate. Wii U online play ended April 8, 2024, regardless of whether the software is digital or physical.
Decision rule
Use this order when deciding:
- Identify the release. Is it a Wii game, a Wii U game or a classic title offered in a Switch Online app?
- Check ownership. If you previously purchased the Wii U digital version, use the redownload path. If not, the Wii U eShop cannot sell it now.
- Check catalog inclusion. For Switch, confirm the game is currently listed in your country’s catalog and that your membership tier includes it.
- Check hardware. Wii software may require Wii Remote equipment, a sensor bar and title-specific accessories; Switch requires the console and a compatible controller setup.
- Check service dependence. A Switch Online classic app depends on active membership and periodic online checks, while Wii U online communication has already ended.
That process prevents the most expensive misunderstanding: paying for a subscription expecting a particular Wii title, or searching the closed Wii U eShop for a game that can now only be obtained physically or redownloaded if it was purchased before the cutoff.
