In May 2024, Nintendo said it would announce the successor to Nintendo Switch within its fiscal year, which ended in March 2025. That was an announcement window—not a promise to release a new console in 2024. Nintendo also confirmed a June 2024 Nintendo Direct focused on Switch games and explicitly ruled out successor news during the presentation.
What Nintendo said about the Switch successor in May 2024
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said in May 2024: “We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year.” The statement, reported by the Associated Press on May 7, 2024, set a deadline for an announcement, not for the successor’s launch. Associated Press

Nintendo’s fiscal year in question ended in March 2025. So “this year” in the headline referred to Nintendo’s fiscal-year timetable, which extended beyond calendar 2024; it did not mean Nintendo had promised to release the console by the end of 2024. Nintendo’s May 2024 fiscal-results briefing
What the June 2024 Nintendo Direct was—and was not—about
Nintendo said the presentation would focus on Nintendo Switch software planned for the second half of 2024. Its official video description stated: “There will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during this presentation.” Nintendo of America’s official video description
