Buy a Nintendo Switch if the games you want are on Nintendo’s console and you want purpose-built handheld or TV play. Buy an iPad if gaming is one use among several and you also need a tablet for apps, browsing, video, or other everyday tasks. There is no universal winner: the right choice depends on the games, play style, and non-gaming needs.
Start with the games you want to play
Check the specific games before choosing hardware. A Switch is a dedicated game system with access to Nintendo’s Switch library; an iPad offers games through the App Store and Apple Arcade. Those libraries are not interchangeable, so a device’s screen or battery life matters less if it cannot play the games you care about.

Apple describes its Apple Arcade service as including over 200 games without ads or in-app purchases in its September 2025 iPadOS 26 feature document. Catalog size and availability can change by date and region, so check the current service listing and the games you want. Apple’s iPadOS 26 feature overview also describes support for game controllers and an Apple Games app. Controller support makes iPad gaming more console-like, but it does not make the iPad a Nintendo console.
Choose based on where and how you play
For handheld and TV play: Switch OLED or standard Switch
Nintendo’s U.S. comparison lists both Switch OLED and standard Switch as handheld and TV-play models. The OLED has a 7-inch OLED touchscreen and 64 GB of storage; the standard model has a 6.2-inch LCD touchscreen and 32 GB. Both have Nintendo’s estimated battery range of approximately 4.5–9 hours, depending on the game. See Nintendo’s Switch model comparison for the current model details.
#1 Best Overall
- Compact, lightweight handheld system
- Available in a range of fun colors
- Online and local wireless multiplayer
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
For handheld-only play: Switch Lite
Switch Lite is the smaller, handheld-only option. Its 5.5-inch LCD touchscreen and 32 GB of storage are paired with Nintendo’s estimated battery range of approximately 3–7 hours, depending on the game. Lite does not support TV Mode. It can play Switch-library games that support handheld mode, so check the compatibility information for each game before buying. Nintendo’s play-mode support page explains which modes the systems support.
For a tablet as well as games: iPad
An iPad is a general-purpose tablet rather than a dedicated console. Apple’s iPad (A16) specifications list iPadOS, built-in apps, USB-C, and external-display support. Apple states battery life of up to 10 hours for web browsing on Wi-Fi or watching video, or up to 9 hours for web browsing over cellular. Those figures describe different activities and conditions from Nintendo’s game-dependent estimates, so they are not a direct battery-life comparison. Apple’s iPad (A16) specifications have the model-specific details.
Rank #2
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
What do the models and prices mean for your budget?
The following details come from manufacturers, not independent comparative testing. Nintendo’s battery figures are estimates that vary with the game; its example, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, is estimated at about 5.5 hours on Switch OLED and standard Switch and about 4 hours on Lite.
| Device | Screen and storage | Manufacturer battery estimate | Play style |
|---|---|---|---|
| Switch OLED | 7.0-inch OLED touchscreen; 64 GB | Approximately 4.5–9 hours, depending on the game | Handheld and TV |
| Standard Switch | 6.2-inch LCD touchscreen; 32 GB | Approximately 4.5–9 hours, depending on the game | Handheld and TV |
| Switch Lite | 5.5-inch LCD touchscreen; 32 GB | Approximately 3–7 hours, depending on the game | Handheld only |
| iPad (A16) | Apple’s cited specifications do not establish a directly comparable screen-and-storage value for this table | Up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi web browsing or video, or up to 9 hours of cellular web browsing, according to Apple | Tablet use; supports games and controllers |
When accessed on October 4, 2026, Apple’s U.S. iPad page listed family starting prices of $449 for iPad, $599 for iPad mini, $749 for iPad Air, and $1,199 for iPad Pro. These are Apple’s U.S. starting prices at that time, not permanent or worldwide prices. Nintendo’s cited comparison lists features, not current U.S. prices. Check the current price in your market rather than treating those starting prices as an apples-to-apples comparison: the iPad families and Switch models are different kinds of products. Apple’s iPad lineup page lists the family and its current pricing.

Rank #3
- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- 6.2” LCD screen.
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
Compare the full cost of the setup you will actually use: console or tablet, desired games, any optional subscription, and accessories. An iPad controller may be useful for some games, but verify that the controller and the game support one another before buying. If you already own a compatible tablet or controller, that can also change the cost of trying a platform.

Neither platform is automatically better for every child or household. Decide which games are appropriate and available, whether TV play matters, and which restrictions you want to manage. Both companies document parental controls, but the controls and setup differ.
Rank #4
- Compact, lightweight handheld system
- Available in a range of fun colors
- Online and local wireless multiplayer
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
- Nintendo Switch: Nintendo says controls can be set up on the console or through the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls smart-device app. See Nintendo’s parental-controls support guide.
- iPad: Apple’s guides describe child setup through Family Sharing and Screen Time, with options including scheduled downtime, app limits, purchase and download restrictions, content ratings, website restrictions, and communication controls. Review Apple’s child iPad setup guide, Screen Time setup, and iPad restrictions.
The documentation establishes which controls are available, not which platform is easier or more effective for every family. The practical choice is the one whose controls fit the limits you intend to set and whose games suit the player.
