The key distinction is which Switch you mean: Switch Lite cannot connect to a TV, the original Switch and Switch OLED can, and Switch 2 supports higher TV output modes than those earlier models. Your best fit depends less on a headline resolution than on the games you want, where you play, whether you need discs, and what your TV supports.
Can you play a Nintendo Switch on your TV?
Yes, if you have an original Nintendo Switch, a Switch OLED, or a Switch 2. The original Switch and OLED model go into their compatible dock to show the game on a TV; they can also be used in handheld or tabletop mode. Switch Lite is handheld-only and does not support TV mode. Nintendo Switch 2 also supports TV, tabletop, and handheld play, but it uses its own dock: Nintendo says the original Switch dock is incompatible with Switch 2. Nintendo’s Switch 2 technical specifications list its docked output modes.

How do their TV capabilities compare?
| Console | TV play | What the official specifications establish |
|---|---|---|
| Original Nintendo Switch | Yes; docked TV play, as well as handheld and tabletop modes. | The supplied official documentation establishes TV mode, but does not state an output specification here that should be confused with Switch 2’s. |
| Nintendo Switch OLED | Yes; supports TV mode through its compatible dock. | The supplied official documentation establishes TV mode, but does not state an output specification here that should be confused with Switch 2’s. |
| Nintendo Switch Lite | No; handheld-only. | TV mode is not supported. Nintendo technical specifications. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Yes; TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, using the Switch 2 dock. | Up to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, or up to 120 fps at 1920×1080 or 2560×1440, according to Nintendo’s specifications. |
| PlayStation 5 | Yes; connects to a TV or monitor via HDMI. | Sony lists support for 4K 120 Hz TVs, 8K TVs, and VRR; availability depends on the connected display, settings, and game. |
These are supported output capabilities, not a guarantee that every game renders at the maximum resolution or frame rate. A console can offer an output mode while an individual game uses a lower resolution or frame rate.

Nintendo lists Switch 2 TV output up to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, and up to 120 fps at 1920×1080 or 2560×1440. Its April 2025 corporate release says the dock can output up to 4K and play games at up to 120 fps, but the detailed specifications clarify that 4K output is listed at 60 fps and 120 fps applies to the lower resolutions. The game and TV must also support the relevant mode. These are Switch 2 capabilities, not specifications for the original Switch or Switch OLED. Nintendo Switch 2 specifications.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld

- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
PS5: features depend on the TV and game
Sony documents 4K, 120 Hz, HDR, and VRR support for PS5, but the relevant feature must also be supported by the connected television and game. For example, a 120 Hz output setting does not make a game run at 120 frames per second if the game does not support that mode. Sony’s video settings guidance explains the dependencies for 120 Hz output and VRR.
What matters when choosing for your TV?
Where you want to play
If you want to take the same system from the television to a handheld or tabletop setup, a dock-compatible Switch model offers that flexibility. Switch Lite does not. PS5 is the straightforward choice if the console will stay connected to a TV or monitor rather than travel with you.

Which games and existing library you care about
Choose around specific games, not an assumption that the consoles share one interchangeable catalog. Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5, though some may have errors or lose functionality. Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Switch games, but some are unsupported or not fully compatible. Check the relevant compatibility pages for titles you intend to play: Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 compatibility information and Nintendo’s Switch 2 game compatibility information.
Your TV’s features
A basic HDMI television can provide TV play, but it may not take advantage of higher resolutions, faster refresh rates, HDR, or VRR. If your current screen works for you, the consoles’ higher-end display features alone are not a reason to replace it.

Physical games and movie discs
The PS5 configuration with a disc drive supports Ultra HD Blu-ray, which matters if you own physical PS4 or PS5 games or want to play UHD Blu-ray movies. Sony’s Digital Edition has no optical-disc support in the cited launch guidance. Retail configurations can vary, so confirm whether the exact PS5 model you are considering includes or supports a drive. Sony’s PS5 hardware specifications.

Official output specifications describe modes a system supports; they do not establish which console looks or runs a particular game better. That depends on the game and its implementation, as well as the display and settings. No same-game performance comparison is established here, so resolution or frame-rate claims should be checked title by title rather than inferred from the maximum output figures.
