Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics launched on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 on February 17, 2026, in the United States and Canada. To play, you need an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership and one of Nintendo’s two dedicated Virtual Boy accessories; the collection cannot be played on Switch Lite. The setup brings a distinctive 1995 Nintendo experiment to current hardware, but it is an add-on that recreates the look and experience—not a reproduction of the original console.
What you need to play Virtual Boy games on Switch
Nintendo’s Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics collection is available in the United States and Canada on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. It is part of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, so an active Expansion Pack membership is required to access the games. Nintendo’s February 2026 launch announcement gives the release date and regional availability.
You also need one of the dedicated accessories: the Virtual Boy for Nintendo Switch 2/Nintendo Switch or the Virtual Boy (Cardboard Model). Nintendo says there is no way to play this collection without an accessory. Both options support Switch 2, Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, and Nintendo Switch; neither supports Switch Lite. See Nintendo Support’s Virtual Boy accessory FAQ for compatibility and purchase details.
How the two Virtual Boy accessories compare
Nintendo’s US store page listed the following prices when the collection launched; prices can change. The full accessory is a dedicated add-on, not a reproduction of the 1995 console.

Why the Virtual Boy remains an unusual chapter in Nintendo history
Nintendo released the Virtual Boy in Japan in 1995. Players looked through an eyepiece at games designed to appear in 3D, an ambitious format distinct from the company’s familiar home consoles. The Switch-era accessory revisits that way of viewing games, but it should not be mistaken for a modern VR headset or treated as an equivalent experience.
Nintendo’s retrospective Iwata Asks interview offers a revealing account of how the system was viewed inside the company. Satoru Iwata called it a commercial failure in his opinion. Shigeru Miyamoto, discussing the difference between judging it as a gaming platform and as a toy, said: “When you think of it as a gaming platform, it becomes a failure.” His comment is a retrospective judgment, not a published unit-sales figure. The interview frames the system as both a troubled gaming platform and an interesting “fun toy,” depending on the lens used to assess it.

No named historical unit-sales statistic is established in these Nintendo sources, so a precise sales total should not be presented as fact. What makes the system worth revisiting is less a definitive commercial tally than the unusual design ambition and the perspective Nintendo’s creators later brought to it.
