Nintendo warned U.S. customers on April 24, 2025, that a My Nintendo Store invitation to buy the Switch 2 might arrive after the console launched on June 5—and that even an order placed through Nintendo was not guaranteed to arrive on launch day.
The warning applied to Nintendo’s U.S. invitation-based direct-sales program. It did not delay the Switch 2 itself, cancel the June 5 launch, or mean that every retailer preorder would arrive late.

What Nintendo warned buyers about
Nintendo cited “very high demand” and warned that delivery by June 5 was not guaranteed. More importantly, the invitation email required to purchase through the My Nintendo Store could arrive after the launch date.

- Invitation timing: registering interest did not guarantee that a buyer would receive an invitation before June 5.
- Delivery timing: receiving an invitation and completing an order still did not guarantee launch-day arrival.
As Engadget reported, the issue was not simply a shipping delay. Some customers could still be waiting for permission to place Nintendo’s direct preorder after the system was already available.

How the invitation process worked
During the launch period, the My Nintendo Store was not an ordinary open checkout. Customers first registered their interest through Nintendo’s Switch 2 purchase page. Nintendo then selected customers for purchase invitations and sent additional batches over time.
Contemporary reporting described the U.S. process as first-come, first-served, with priority consideration for certain Nintendo Switch Online customers. Reported priority criteria included having personally purchased Nintendo Switch Online by April 2, 2025; maintaining at least 12 months of paid membership; opting in to gameplay-data sharing; and recording at least 50 hours of gameplay.
Those criteria affected priority in the invitation queue. They did not guarantee an invitation, a console allocation, or delivery on June 5.

What the warning did—and did not—mean
| It did mean | It did not mean |
|---|---|
| Some invitations could arrive after June 5. | The Switch 2 launch had been postponed. |
| Delivery by launch day was not guaranteed for Nintendo Store orders. | Every retailer preorder was affected. |
| Registration alone was not a launch-day purchasing guarantee. | Customers had to buy through Nintendo’s store. |
Nintendo’s launch announcement still set the U.S. release date for June 5, 2025, with a base-system MSRP of $449.99. The Nintendo Switch 2 and Mario Kart World bundle was listed at $499.99. Retailer inventory, pickup options, and delivery estimates were separate from Nintendo’s invitation queue.
Key dates
- April 2, 2025: Nintendo announced the Switch 2 launch date and U.S. pricing.
- April 24, 2025: Nintendo warned that invitations and launch-day delivery were not guaranteed.
- May 8, 2025: The first reported U.S. invitation batch began rolling out. This was not a promise that every eligible registrant would receive an email that day.
- June 5, 2025: The Switch 2 launched in the United States.
- August 28, 2025: Nintendo says My Nintendo Store purchases became available without an invitation.
Nintendo Life reported on the first invitation rollout and advised customers to monitor their inboxes, including spam and junk folders.
What launch-period buyers should have done
- Keep a retailer preorder if launch timing mattered. Do not cancel an existing order solely because a Nintendo invitation might arrive.
- Monitor the Nintendo Account email address. Check spam, junk, and promotions folders regularly.
- Treat an invitation as a purchase opportunity, not a delivery promise. Compare Nintendo’s estimated shipping date with the retailer’s pickup or delivery estimate.
- Act promptly if an invitation arrived. Contemporary coverage reported that the purchase window was time-limited, although the precise historical expiration rule should not be confused with a current Nintendo policy.
- Consider the alternatives. Retailer stock, store pickup, and later availability were separate options from Nintendo’s direct-sales queue.
What happened if an invite never arrived?
A missing invitation before launch did not necessarily mean a customer had been rejected. Nintendo said invitations would continue beyond the launch period, so some buyers could receive one after June 5. A customer who never received one also remained free to purchase through another retailer or wait for broader availability.

Current status
This is now a historical launch story. Nintendo’s current U.S. How to buy page says an invitation has not been required for My Nintendo Store purchases since August 28, 2025. Readers looking to buy a Switch 2 in 2026 should not wait for a launch-era invitation email.
Nintendo’s current product page lists the system’s U.S. MSRP as $449.99, but live stock, retailer pricing, bundles, and delivery estimates can change.
The bottom line
Nintendo’s official preorder route was not a guaranteed path to a Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. Buyers first had to receive an invitation, and Nintendo warned that some invitations could arrive after launch. Even after ordering, launch-day delivery was not guaranteed. The console launched as scheduled; the uncertainty was specific to Nintendo’s U.S. direct-sales process.
