stdprov.dll is a Windows WMI component, not a Visual C++ or DirectX library. If Windows or an application says that stdprov.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, record:
- The exact program showing the error.
- The complete error message.
- Whether it appears when Windows starts, when launching one application, or during a specific task such as backup or System Restore.
- The full path named in the message, if one is shown.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the problem began after an update, driver installation, cleanup, antivirus detection, or application installation.
- Whether other Windows features, WMI tools, installers, backups, or System Restore also fail.
This information helps distinguish a damaged Windows component from an application-specific dependency problem.

What stdprov.dll does
stdprov.dll is the Windows Management Instrumentation Registry Provider. Microsoft identifies it as the DLL that implements the StdRegProv WMI class, which allows WMI clients to retrieve registry information dynamically.

Microsoft describes this WMI layout in its WMI Architecture documentation.
This file is not:
- A Visual C++ Redistributable component
- A DirectX library
- A .NET Framework file
- An application-private DLL
- A file that should normally be copied into a game or program folder
A missing file can result from Windows component corruption, an interrupted servicing operation, antivirus quarantine, disk problems, or an application that is reporting a dependency failure inaccurately.
What the error messages mean
You may see wording such as:
- “The program can’t start because stdprov.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because stdprov.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading stdprov.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because stdprov.dll was not found.”
- “stdprov.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are generic Windows loader messages. They do not always prove that the named file itself is absent.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
In particular, “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency required by stdprov.dll is missing or cannot load. A damaged component, incompatible process architecture, incorrect permissions, or an application-side failure can produce similar wording.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Windows component files are serviced through Windows Update and the Windows component store. Start with this quick repair.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Download and install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require a restart.
- Open the affected program again.
If the error disappears, the missing or damaged component was likely restored during servicing.
If Windows Update reports an error, remains stuck, or the DLL message returns, continue with DISM and System File Checker.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired source to check and restore protected system files. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
Run DISM
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
A successful completion indicates that DISM repaired or verified the component store. If DISM reports that the operation completed successfully, continue with SFC.

Run System File Checker
In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files appear intact. Retest the application and investigate application-specific causes if the error remains.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows, then test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, review the CBS log, and use the repair-source procedure below.
Restart after SFC reports that it repaired files.
If you would rather not repeatedly hunt through Windows servicing results and guess which component needs attention, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what it found; repairs are performed by the full version, while the free scan is for diagnosis. It is optional, and Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the official repair path.
Use a matching repair source when DISM cannot repair Windows
If DISM says that source files could not be found, Microsoft documents using a repair source that matches the installed Windows edition and build.
The command format is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a valid matching Windows repair source. Do not use a source from a different release or edition merely because it contains a file with the same name.
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft also documents SFC details in:
%WINDIR%LogsCBSCBS.log
The log can help identify which protected files could not be repaired.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Antivirus software can quarantine a file after a false detection or after malware has tampered with it. Treat this as a possibility, not proof that antivirus caused the problem.

In Windows Security:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
stdprov.dll. - Expand an entry to inspect its path, detection name, and action.
Microsoft explains Protection History and its restore controls in Protection History in the Windows Security app.
Do not blindly choose Restore or Allow on device. First verify that the file belongs in the Windows WMI directory and that it has a valid Microsoft digital signature. If the alert suggests malware, run a complete Windows Security scan instead.
After a legitimate file is restored, run DISM and SFC, restart Windows, and test again.
Fix 4: Verify the file’s path and digital signature
A genuine copy should normally be associated with the Windows WMI directory:

%WINDIR%System32Wbem
To inspect the path:
- Press Windows + E.
- Select the address bar.
- Enter:
%WINDIR%System32Wbem
- Press Enter.
- Look for
stdprov.dll.
A file with the same name in a download folder, temporary directory, application folder, or an unexpected user profile location deserves caution.
To check a file’s signature:
- Right-click
stdprov.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is Microsoft.
The absence of a file in that directory does not justify copying an arbitrary replacement. Let Windows servicing restore it.
Fix 5: Account for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows
On 64-bit Windows, %WINDIR%System32 contains native 64-bit system files. A 32-bit process is redirected to %WINDIR%SysWOW64 when it accesses system locations. Microsoft explains this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.
This can make diagnosis confusing:
- A 64-bit application may use the native Windows system path.
- A 32-bit application may see the redirected 32-bit system path.
- A DLL labelled “32-bit” on a public indexing site is not automatically suitable for every Windows installation.
- A matching filename does not prove that the architecture, build, dependencies, or signature are correct.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Review System type.
Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit Windows directory or mix files from different Windows releases.

If only one program reports the error while Windows, WMI, installers, and other applications work normally, the application may be probing for the component incorrectly or may have its own damaged files.
Use the program’s official repair option first:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps or Apps & features, depending on your Windows version.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application and test it.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help:
- Return to the application’s entry.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application’s official publisher.
- Install the program again.
- Test it before adding optional plugins or modifications.
Do not copy stdprov.dll into the application’s installation folder unless the application vendor specifically documents that deployment method. This is a Windows WMI provider, not normally an application-private library.
If the program is old, check whether it offers a current build that supports your version of Windows. If only that program fails, reinstalling the program remains more appropriate than replacing a Windows DLL manually.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when the timing points to a driver change
A display, storage, chipset, security, or device driver can be involved when the problem began immediately after a driver installation or update. A driver is not the usual source of a missing stdprov.dll, so do not replace drivers at random.

If manually checking every device and comparing driver versions is taking longer than the original diagnosis, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and a clean application reinstall or Windows repair is still the correct fix when the problem is not driver-related.
Fix 8: Check Windows Features without rebuilding WMI
Some applications depend on optional Windows components. If the error appears after an application install, review the features that application actually requires.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the Windows Features list.
- Enable only a feature required by the affected application.
- Select OK and allow Windows to apply the change.
- Restart if prompted.
Do not disable or enable random features in an attempt to recreate stdprov.dll. WMI is a Windows management subsystem, and casually deleting or rebuilding the WMI repository can remove provider registrations and create additional failures.
If WMI itself is failing, inspect the WMI service and event logs instead:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Locate Windows Management Instrumentation.
- Check its status and startup type.
- Do not repeatedly stop, reset, or rebuild the repository without a specific diagnostic reason.
Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent system change
If the error began immediately after an update, driver installation, or software change, System Restore may reverse that change without removing personal documents.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Save open work and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace a missing DLL with an arbitrary download. It rolls back selected system changes. Microsoft describes its behavior in System Restore.
Fix 10: Use Windows recovery or an in-place repair
Escalate to recovery when:
- DISM cannot repair the component store.
- SFC repeatedly fails.
- The problem returns after repair.
- Multiple Windows features fail.
- WMI, backups, installers, or System Restore are also broken.
- Event logs indicate continuing disk or filesystem errors.
Back up personal files first. Microsoft’s Recovery options in Windows explains when to use reset, recovery, or repair installation methods.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Use installation media that matches the installed Windows release and architecture.
If corruption returns after successful repairs, investigate the storage device and review Windows event logs. A failing drive can damage restored files again.
Why regsvr32 stdprov.dll usually does not help
regsvr32 registers certain COM DLLs that expose a DllRegisterServer function. It does not download a missing file, restore a damaged component store, or repair every DLL.

Microsoft documents the narrow purpose of DllRegisterServer in Implementing DllRegisterServer.
Some old Volume Shadow Copy Service procedures include:
regsvr32 stdprov.dll
That is a legacy, scenario-specific instruction. It is not a general repair for an ordinary “stdprov.dll missing” message. If regsvr32 reports that the module cannot load, the result may indicate a dependency or architecture problem rather than a need to register the file.
Frequently asked questions
Is stdprov.dll legitimate?
Yes. It is a genuine Microsoft Windows WMI component when it is in the expected Windows WMI location and has a valid Microsoft signature.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not specifically for stdprov.dll. It belongs to Windows WMI and should normally be repaired through Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Should I download stdprov.dll from a DLL website?
No. A manually downloaded copy may contain malware or have the wrong Windows build, architecture, dependencies, permissions, or signature. It can also leave the Windows component store inconsistent. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, Windows recovery, or the affected application’s official installer.
Can cleanup software remove this file?
It is possible for a cleanup or security action to affect system files, but do not assume that happened. Check Protection History, verify the file path and signature, and run the official Windows repair commands.
Why does one application fail while everything else works?
The application may be damaged, incompatible, incorrectly probing for WMI, or reporting a dependency failure as a missing stdprov.dll. Repair or reinstall that application from its official source after confirming that Windows itself is healthy.
What should I provide when asking for further help?
Record the Windows version and build, exact error text, full path, affected application, relevant Event Viewer entry, and the final results from DISM and SFC. Also note whether the problem affects WMI, backups, installers, System Restore, or multiple applications.
What is the safest repair order?
Install Windows updates and restart, run DISM, run SFC, restart again, check antivirus quarantine and the file signature, then repair the affected application if only one program fails. Use System Restore or Windows recovery only when normal servicing does not resolve the broader problem.
