Nintendo Wii Fit Plus Review: More Variety, Same Balance Board

Wii Fit Plus expands the original Wii Fit with more activities and customizable routines, but you still need a Wii console and Balance Board.

Wii Fit Plus is a broader, more customizable version of Wii Fit—not a replacement for the hardware that made the original work. It keeps the original game’s activities, adds 21 more for 69 total training activities according to Nintendo’s Japanese product material, and introduces themed and time-based routines. You still need a Wii console and Wii Balance Board, so its appeal today depends on having those components or finding them in suitable condition.

What is Wii Fit Plus?

Wii Fit Plus is Nintendo’s 2009 Wii fitness game. Its release date depends on region: Nintendo lists 1 October 2009 for Japan and 30 October 2009 for the UK. Those dates describe separate regional releases, not one worldwide launch date.

As a package, Plus builds on the original Wii Fit rather than replacing it. Nintendo says the game includes all of Wii Fit’s original content, supports carrying over save data, and adds 21 activities to the original 48, for 69 total training activities. Nintendo UK describes the library as more than 60 activities, including 15 Training Plus games; those are the categories and counts used by each regional listing, so they should not be treated as identical breakdowns.

What does Wii Fit Plus add to Wii Fit?

More activities across several styles

The activity mix includes yoga, strength or muscle workouts, aerobic exercise, and balance games. Nintendo’s Japanese feature page counts 21 additions over the original game, while its UK listing highlights 15 Training Plus games within a broader total of more than 60 activities. The extra games provide more ways to use the board, but they do not change the basic premise: you follow on-screen activities while the Balance Board reads your weight shifts and balance.

Wii Fit Plus with Balance Board
  • The Wii Fit Plus Bundle includes the game software and the Wii Balance Board.
  • Users can input the amount of time they want to spend on their workouts or select an area for personal improvement, and Wii Fit Plus will suggest a number of diverse activities for them.
  • For the first time, users can mix and match which strength and yoga activities they prefer on a given day. The seamless exercise flows make it easier than ever for users to maintain their daily workout routines.
  • The range of games and customization options will make players want to play every day. They’ll be having so much fun that their workouts will seem to fly by in no time at all.

Routines you can tailor to your available time

Plus adds suggested and custom routines. Nintendo describes menus assembled from yoga and strength activities, with time-based suggestions such as 5, 10, or 20 minutes. This makes it easier to start with a short selection rather than choosing every activity separately, or to arrange a sequence that fits a particular goal.

More ways to review activity

The game can record exercise time and estimated calories and display results and training progress in graphs and a calendar. These are tracking features inside the game; Nintendo’s feature descriptions establish what the software records and displays, not that its calorie estimates are medically accurate or that playing produces a particular health or weight-loss result.

Do you need the Wii Balance Board?

Yes. Wii Fit Plus requires both a Wii console and a Wii Balance Board. Nintendo sold the software on its own for people who already owned Wii Fit, as well as in a bundle with the board. Nintendo UK’s 2009 launch announcement put the upgrade plainly: “If you already own Wii Fit, all you need is the Wii Fit Plus disc.” That assumes you also have the required console and board.

Nintendo lists the Wii Remote and Wii Remote Plus among compatible controllers on its UK product page. The board is the essential extra hardware for the weight, balance, and board-based activities; the game is not a standalone fitness title for a modern console.

How do the balance and progress features work?

Nintendo describes checks for weight and BMI, center of balance, and exercise ability, including a “balance age” result. The Japanese product page also says as many as eight people can register profiles, and that pets or babies can be registered for weighing. These are functions and labels used by the game, not a substitute for clinical assessment or a guarantee that its readings reflect medical measurements.

The Wii Fit Plus Channel was historically offered as a game-disc download in October 2009. According to Nintendo Support, it could launch a body test, load a saved profile and adjust settings, or display a progress chart without starting the game disc. That historical description does not establish whether the channel can still be downloaded now.

Is Wii Fit Plus worth playing now?

It is a sensible upgrade if you own the original setup

If you already have a working Wii, Balance Board, and Wii Fit, Plus is the more flexible game: it retains the original content, adds activities, supports save-data transfer, and offers routines that can be organized around time. It is a straightforward way to get more variety from the equipment you already own.

Buying the complete setup takes more consideration

Nintendo marks the board bundle as discontinued. A prospective buyer may need to source a used disc and board separately or find a complete secondhand set. Current prices, seller inventory, and the condition of individual boards are not established here, so check exactly what a listing includes and inspect the board’s condition before buying. The original Nintendo bundle included four AA alkaline batteries; a used bundle may not include them.

Wii Fit Game with Balance Board (Renewed)
  • Wii Fit requires a Wii console to play. Wii console sold separately.
  • Wii Fit combines fitness with fun and is designed for everyone, young and old. Wii Fit players work towards personal fitness goals and they block soccer balls, swivel hips to power hoop twirls, and go big on ski jumps to get themselves there.
  • Check your daily progress, set goals, check your Wii Fit Age, and even enter exercise time you've done outside of Wii Fit.
  • Wii Fit Age is measured by factoring the user's BMI reading, testing the user's center of gravity and conducting quick balance tests.
  • Training is at the core of Wii Fit. You can spend as much (or as little) time as you want trying out all of the 40+ activities Wii Fit offers.

Keep expectations focused on a game, not a fitness guarantee

Wii Fit Plus offers structured activities and a way to log in-game results, but Nintendo’s product information is not evidence that the game reliably causes weight loss, meets exercise guidelines, or measures health with clinical accuracy. Treat it as an active-game package whose enjoyment and usefulness depend on the player, the available space, and the condition of the hardware.

Space and safety

Nintendo’s instruction-manual search extract recommends at least 3 feet (1 meter) of clear space and advises following the manual’s precautions to avoid injury or damage to the board and nearby objects. Read the full manual for the complete safety guidance before playing, and make sure the play area is clear.
