He said it was aimed at players who want more information about the console, not just a quick introduction, and described its interview-era U.S. price of $9.99 as “a good value for what you’re getting out of the product.” That is Nintendo’s view of the product, not an independent measure of whether it is worth the price to every player.
What Nintendo said about the separate price
In an interview with IGN, published April 7, 2025, Trinen was asked about charging separately for Welcome Tour. IGN’s editor’s note says the interview was conducted April 3, 2025. Trinen confirmed a U.S. price of $9.99 and said the software was digital-only at that time. These are statements from the 2025 interview, not confirmation of current eShop pricing or availability.

Trinen said the experience was intended especially for players curious about Switch 2’s technology and specifications:
“For some people, I think there are people who are particularly interested in the tech and the specs of the system and things like that, for them I think it’s going to be a great product. It’s really for people that want more information about the system rather than necessarily a quick intro to everything it does.”

Nintendo Switch 2 System
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
He then tied the price to the amount of work and care the team put into the software:
“And for that reason and just the amount of care and work that the team put into it, I think it was decided that, ‘Yeah, this feels like $9.99 is not an exorbitant price. It feels like a good value for what you’re getting out of the product.’”

Both statements are Trinen’s explanation of Nintendo’s pricing decision. The interview does not report a consumer survey, a comparison with other games, or an independent assessment of value.
Who that rationale may appeal to
Trinen’s distinction is between a quick introduction to the system and a more detailed look at what it can do. A player who enjoys exploring hardware features and specifications may see more to engage with than someone who only wants a brief orientation to the console. That difference in interest is central to Nintendo’s explanation: the product’s detail is the reason Trinen gave for charging separately, but it does not establish that every Switch 2 owner will find the asking price worthwhile.
