The Costco story did not confirm a Nintendo Switch 2 price. A February 2025 report described an alleged Costco Canada placeholder listing at C$499.99; Nintendo’s official U.S. console-only MSRP was later set at $449.99 for launch, then raised to $499.99 effective September 1, 2026. Those matching figures are in different currencies and come from different sources and dates.
What the Costco listing allegedly showed
On February 10, 2025, Nintendo Life reported on a Famiboards post and images said to show a Costco Canada internal product listing and a printed point-of-sale sign. The alleged listing showed C$499.99. The sign reportedly described the item as “NINTENDO SWITCH PALCE HOLDER,” and the forum poster did not claim the item was definitely for Switch 2; the amount itself could also have been a placeholder. Nintendo Life’s report therefore documents an unverified retail-placeholder rumor, not an authenticated price leak or Nintendo announcement.

Because the alleged amount was in Canadian dollars and its product identification was uncertain, it should not be converted into a predicted U.S. price. The number alone cannot establish the console’s eventual price in Canada or elsewhere.

Nintendo announced that Switch 2 would be released on June 5, 2025. Its Japanese announcement distinguished the Japan-only Japanese-language system from a multi-language system listed at ¥69,980; those Japan-specific prices do not set prices in other markets. Nintendo’s launch announcement gives the release date and regional details.

Why the rumor and current U.S. price are not the same claim
The rumor and the official U.S. MSRP differ on every point needed for a valid comparison: the Costco amount was reported second-hand from an alleged Canadian retail placeholder in February 2025, while Nintendo announced a U.S. console-only launch MSRP in 2025 and revised that U.S. MSRP in 2026. The original C$499.99 and the current U.S. $499.99 share a numeral, but not a currency, region, date, source, or confirmed product configuration.
Nintendo of America said the U.S. console MSRP would remain $449.99 when it announced the launch pricing in April 2025; the $499.99 figure at that time applied to the Mario Kart World bundle. Nintendo later announced the console-only U.S. MSRP would change to $499.99 on September 1, 2026, citing market conditions expected to extend over the medium to long term. The 2026 notice also said Switch 2 pricing in Latin America would be shared later, so the U.S. revision should not be treated as a worldwide price.

How Nintendo says it sets regional hardware prices
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said in the company’s official English translation of an investor Q&A that hardware prices are evaluated regionally, taking manufacturing costs, consumers’ price perceptions, exchange-rate differences compared with the Switch launch, and local market conditions into account. His explanation is why a Canadian retail placeholder cannot reliably predict a U.S. MSRP through currency conversion alone.
“When determining hardware prices, we consider not only the manufacturing cost, but also various factors such as consumers’ impression of the price, the vast differences in exchange rates compared to the Nintendo Switch launch, and the market conditions in each region.”
