Nintendo’s Palworld lawsuit has become narrower, not finished. Reporting based on Tokyo District Court records says Nintendo and The Pokémon Company amended their claims in November 2025 to target older versions of Palworld, after Pocketpair changed the disputed summoning and gliding mechanics.
That is the meaningful official-record update. It is not a judgment that Nintendo lost, that its patents are invalid, or that Palworld is legally cleared worldwide.

Reporting based on Tokyo District Court records says Nintendo and The Pokémon Company narrowed their Palworld patent claims in November 2025 so that they target older versions of the game. That change came after Pocketpair altered gameplay systems associated with the lawsuit in versions 0.3.11 and 0.5.5.
That is an important change in the case’s practical scope, but it does not mean Nintendo lost, that the patents were invalidated, or that Palworld has been legally cleared worldwide. The lawsuit remains pending, and no final judgment, settlement, dismissal, or confirmed global shutdown order has been verified in the available reporting.

What Nintendo actually sued Pocketpair over
Nintendo and The Pokémon Company announced on September 19, 2024, that they had filed a patent-infringement lawsuit against Pocketpair in the Tokyo District Court on September 18. Nintendo’s announcement said the plaintiffs were seeking an injunction against infringement and compensation for damages.
Pocketpair’s November 8, 2024 report identified the three Japanese patents named in the plaintiffs’ claims:

| Japanese patent | Filing date listed by Pocketpair | Registration date listed by Pocketpair |
|---|---|---|
| 7,545,191 | July 30, 2024 | August 27, 2024 |
| 7,493,117 | February 26, 2024 | May 22, 2024 |
| 7,528,390 | March 5, 2024 | July 26, 2024 |
According to Pocketpair, The Pokémon Company requested ¥5 million plus late-payment damages, and Nintendo requested another ¥5 million plus late-payment damages. The plaintiffs also sought an injunction against Palworld. Those are the publicly identified requests, not a court-ordered damages award or necessarily a legal ceiling on every form of relief.
The distinction between patents and copyright matters. The case concerns patent claims covering game systems and mechanics. The original announcements do not identify Palworld’s creature artwork as the legal basis of this lawsuit. The familiar comparisons between Pals and Pokémon may explain why the dispute attracted attention, but they are not the same thing as a copyright ruling over Palworld’s character designs.
The claim scope reportedly shifted to older Palworld versions
Automaton reported on June 12, 2026, after reviewing Tokyo District Court civil case records, that the plaintiffs amended the scope of their claims in November 2025. Before the amendment, the accused Palworld version was reportedly not limited. Afterward, the claims targeted older versions of the game.
The reports do not provide a simple, definitive public cutoff saying that every build before one particular version is included and every later build is excluded. The safe conclusion is narrower: the litigation is now directed at historical implementations rather than treating the current version as an undifferentiated target.

That matters because Pocketpair changed two mechanics after the lawsuit began:
| Version | Change | Why it matters to the case |
|---|---|---|
| 0.3.11, November 2024 | Players no longer threw a Pal Sphere to summon a Pal. The Pal appeared directly beside the player instead. | This removed a mechanic that had been publicly associated with the dispute from the later implementation. |
| 0.5.5, May 2025 | Pal-based gliding was changed to an item-glider system. A Pal’s gliding capability became an additional effect of the glider. | The later game no longer implements Pal gliding in the same direct form. |
In a May 8, 2025 statement, Pocketpair said it believed Palworld did not infringe any of the plaintiffs’ patents and maintained that the patents were invalid. The studio described its gameplay changes as preventive measures designed to keep development and distribution moving while making its non-infringement position clearer.
What the narrowing means—and what it does not mean
It likely reduces the current game’s direct exposure
If the plaintiffs are pursuing older versions, the post-lawsuit changes are less likely to be the immediate subject of the same infringement theories. In practical terms, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company appear to be concentrating on whether earlier implementations infringed and whether that historical conduct supports damages or other relief.
That is why the update is significant for players. A lawsuit aimed at a removed mechanic presents a different practical problem from one aimed at the systems currently shipped, updated, and distributed by Pocketpair. The scope change also helps explain why Palworld has continued to receive development and distribution rather than disappearing immediately after the filing.

Narrowing the accused versions does not establish that the older versions were non-infringing. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company can still argue that the historical implementations fell within the asserted patent claims. Pocketpair can still challenge infringement, patent validity, the interpretation of the claims, and the relief sought.
Nor does changing the game automatically erase possible historical damages. The court still has to determine which versions are relevant, whether the asserted patents cover the accused implementations, whether the patents withstand the applicable challenges, and what relief is legally available.

It does not create worldwide legal clearance
This is a Japanese lawsuit in the Tokyo District Court. A change to the claims in that case is not a worldwide declaration that every version of Palworld is safe from every possible claim. It also is not a confirmed order allowing or requiring Palworld to remain available in every country and on every platform.
The available reporting has not verified an injunction against the current version, a global order requiring Palworld to leave sale, a settlement, a dismissal, or a final ruling for either side.
A related Nintendo patent application was rejected—but that is a separate issue
Much of the recent discussion has also focused on a Japan Patent Office decision involving divisional application No. 2026-019762. Automaton West reported in July 2026 that the JPO maintained its rejection of the application, which was described as covering an in-game monster-catching system.
The application is relevant to Nintendo’s broader patent strategy and to the mechanics discussed around the Palworld dispute. However, it is not one of the three granted Japanese patents that Pocketpair identified as the patents asserted in the Tokyo lawsuit.
The JPO’s reported inventive-step analysis referred in part to a 2013 gameplay video showing the unofficial fan game Pokémon Generations. Nintendo argued that the cited fan game and its characters infringed Nintendo’s copyrights and objected to how the prior art was characterized. The JPO reportedly rejected that argument as a response to the patent analysis: whether the cited material infringed copyright does not determine whether the claimed invention involved an inventive step under patent law.
That distinction is crucial:
- The JPO rejection concerns a divisional patent application, not an invalidity decision against the three granted patents asserted in the Palworld lawsuit.
- It does not decide whether Palworld infringed any of those three granted patents.
- It does not constitute a judgment in Pocketpair’s favor.
- It does complicate Nintendo’s broader effort to obtain or preserve patent protection around related capture mechanics.
In short, the patent-office development may weaken or complicate part of Nintendo’s wider patent strategy, but it cannot substitute for the Tokyo court’s decision in the Pocketpair case.

Where the lawsuit stands now
The case remains pending based on the available reporting. Automaton’s review of court records identified a technical explanation session scheduled for October 1, 2026, followed by a reported court disclosure of its preliminary view on November 9, 2026. Those dates are procedural milestones, not a final judgment.
A technical session can help the court and parties clarify the disputed patent issues. A preliminary view can indicate how the court is currently approaching parts of the case. Neither event, by itself, proves infringement, invalidity, liability, or the amount of any award. Any later court order would need to be assessed separately.

What this means for Palworld players
For someone playing the current game, the most important practical point is that there is no verified worldwide shutdown order in the available material. Pocketpair’s changes were presented as steps to keep development and distribution going, and the reported narrowing makes the historical versions more central to the case.
That does not make the dispute irrelevant. A ruling over older versions could still affect Pocketpair financially or establish how the asserted patents apply to similar game systems. It could also influence future design decisions if the court adopts Nintendo’s interpretation of the patent claims. But those outcomes remain unresolved.
Players should also avoid treating old gameplay clips, current gameplay, and the legal pleadings as interchangeable. The lawsuit’s scope reportedly changed precisely because the implementation changed. A video showing an early Palworld build may be more relevant to the litigation than a player’s experience with a later patch, while neither is itself proof of infringement.
The bottom line
Nintendo’s Palworld lawsuit has quietly become narrower, not finished. The reported November 2025 amendment puts older versions of Palworld at the center after Pocketpair revised the disputed mechanics. The JPO’s rejection of a related divisional application adds pressure to Nintendo’s broader patent strategy, but it does not invalidate the three granted patents asserted in the Tokyo case. Until the court issues a final ruling or another binding order, claims that Nintendo lost—or that Palworld is legally cleared worldwide—go beyond the evidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Nintendo lose the Palworld lawsuit?
No. Court-record reporting says the plaintiffs narrowed the claims to older versions of Palworld, but the case remains pending. There is no verified final judgment, settlement, dismissal, or ruling that Pocketpair did not infringe.
Is Palworld being banned or removed from sale?
No worldwide shutdown order has been verified in the available reporting. Pocketpair changed the relevant mechanics and continued development and distribution, but the court has not finally resolved the dispute.
Which patents are involved in Nintendo’s Palworld lawsuit?
Pocketpair identified Japanese Patent Nos. 7,545,191, 7,493,117, and 7,528,390 as the patents named in the plaintiffs’ claims. The case concerns patent claims about game systems and mechanics, not a copyright lawsuit over Palworld’s creature designs.

Did the Japan Patent Office invalidate Nintendo’s Palworld patents?
No. The JPO rejection concerns divisional application No. 2026-019762, a separate application related to Nintendo’s broader patent strategy. It is not an invalidity ruling against the three granted patents identified in the Tokyo lawsuit.
Which version of Palworld is Nintendo suing over?
The reported amendment targets older versions, but the available material does not establish an exact version cutoff or decide whether those versions infringed. The court still has to resolve the historical claims and any requested relief.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The Palworld case reportedly now focuses on older game versions, which reduces its direct reach over Pocketpair’s later patches. It remains an active Japanese patent lawsuit, and the related JPO rejection is not a ruling that Nintendo’s asserted patents are invalid or that Pocketpair won.
