Nintendo’s Wii U and 3DS Online Services Shut Down in 2024—Here’s What Still Works

Nintendo’s Wii U and 3DS online services ended on April 8, 2024—not today. Offline play, StreetPass, redownloads, updates, and limited exceptions remain.

Nintendo did shut down most Wii U and Nintendo 3DS online services—but not today. The shutdown took place on April 8, 2024, at 5 p.m. PDT in the Americas (April 9 at 9 a.m. JST in Japan). As of September 2026, recycled headlines claiming the servers are shutting down “today” are outdated.

The consoles themselves still work. Offline games, local multiplayer, StreetPass, software updates, and redownloads of previously purchased games and DLC remain separate from the discontinued online services, although Nintendo describes redownload access as available only “for the foreseeable future.”

What Nintendo shut down

Nintendo ended online communication features for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS software, including software exclusive to New Nintendo 3DS systems. The shutdown affected Nintendo and generally supported third-party games, though individual publishers may have operated separate services with their own status.

  • Online multiplayer and cooperative play
  • Matchmaking and other game-server functions
  • Internet rankings and leaderboards
  • Online data distribution
  • Other features that depended on Nintendo Network communication

That means online modes in games such as Mario Kart 8, Splatoon, Mario Kart 7, and the Wii U and 3DS versions of Super Smash Bros. no longer have Nintendo’s official online service. Online battles, trading, and related functions in Pokémon software can also be affected. A game may still launch normally while only its network-dependent features stop working.

Nintendo’s official support notice is the authority for the general shutdown. It does not necessarily mean that every server operated by every publisher was technically switched off by Nintendo.

What still works

Function Status
Offline single-player modes Still usable when the game does not require an online connection.
Local multiplayer Still available where supported by the game and hardware.
StreetPass Local system-to-system communication remains available.
SpotPass Online-dependent features were discontinued.
Purchased software and DLC Nintendo says redownloads remain available for the foreseeable future.
Software updates Nintendo says update data can still be downloaded.
Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter Survived the general shutdown, but Nintendo warns they may end later.

StreetPass is not SpotPass

StreetPass uses local communication between nearby Nintendo 3DS systems, so it was not eliminated by the internet shutdown. SpotPass depends on online communication and was discontinued. For example, StreetPass Mii Plaza can still be used locally, but online-dependent content such as receiving new panels through internet communication is unavailable.

  • The Wii U GamePad breaks down barriers between you and your entertainment with a 6.2" 16:9 LCD touch screen, motion control system, front-facing camera, microphone, stereo speakers, rumble feature
  • Console works with most games from the original Wii console, as well as the Wii Remote, Wii Remote Plus, Nunchuk controllers, Balance Board and many other Wii accessories, so you can continue to enjoy your favorite Wii features
  • Play using a Wii Remote controller, the Wii U GamePad controller or a Wii U Pro Controller.
  • Four USB 2.0 connector slots are included. The new console is backward compatible with Wii games and Wii accessories.

Digital purchases and updates

Nintendo says owners can still redownload previously purchased games and downloadable content and download software updates. That policy is not a permanent guarantee. Keep your Nintendo Network ID and Nintendo Account credentials available, and avoid deleting owned software or DLC casually if you cannot reliably access the redownload process later.

Some title-specific DLC or in-game delivery features may have depended on online functionality, so the result can vary by game. Redownload access also does not permit new purchases: the Wii U and 3DS eShops no longer sell software.

The eShop closure happened earlier

The eShop shutdown and the online-service shutdown were separate events:

  1. March 27, 2023: New purchases on the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops ended.
  2. March 11, 2024: The deadline passed for the specified process of merging eligible unused eShop balances into a Nintendo Account wallet.
  3. April 8, 2024: Online play and most other Nintendo Network-dependent software functions ended in the Americas.
  4. After April 8, 2024: Nintendo continued to provide redownloads, DLC redownloads, and updates for the foreseeable future.

Free content such as demos also could no longer be downloaded after the eShop purchasing service ended. The eShop was not the same thing as the online multiplayer service, and neither event shut down the consoles themselves. See Nintendo’s eShop discontinuation Q&A for the sales and balance deadlines.

Can official online play be restored?

Not through Nintendo. The principal community alternative is Pretendo Network, a free, open-source project that recreates selected Nintendo Network services for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pretendo is not operated, endorsed, or guaranteed by Nintendo. Support varies by game and feature, and its progress indicators are not a promise that every supported title will work reliably. Installation may require homebrew or system modification, depending on the console and setup method; the project provides documentation for supported installation paths and Wii U-specific setup.

Nintendo warns that unofficial services imitating Wii U network features are unsupported and may create unexpected security risks. Pretendo is also not an eShop replacement and should not be treated as a way to obtain Nintendo software. Emulation is a separate technical and legal issue, not a simple fix for an original-console owner.

What Wii U and 3DS owners should do now

  1. Check that important purchased games, DLC, and updates are installed or can still be redownloaded.
  2. Keep Nintendo Network ID and Nintendo Account credentials available.
  3. Back up save data where the console and game allow it.
  4. Use physical copies for games you want to preserve long-term, while remembering that physical media does not restore official online servers.
  5. Use StreetPass locally where applicable.
  6. Treat Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter as temporary exceptions, not permanent guarantees.
  7. Consider Pretendo only if its unofficial status, setup requirements, compatibility limits, and security trade-offs are acceptable.

The bottom line

Nintendo’s official Wii U and 3DS online era ended on April 8, 2024—not today. Online multiplayer, rankings, data distribution, and other Nintendo Network features are gone for most software, but the hardware remains usable offline. Nintendo still permits redownloads and updates for the foreseeable future, StreetPass continues to work locally, and a few Pokémon services remain exceptions that could disappear later.
