In Nioh 3, Onmyo Magic comes from Soul Cores equipped in the Onmyo Box: place a Core in Yin to ready its corresponding magic, then select that magic from Items or assign it to a shortcut. Pray at a shrine to restore its uses. There is no one universally best talisman or fixed set of map coordinates to cast it; choose for the encounter—control for a dangerous enemy, Ki utility in Yokai Realm pressure, or sustain during a longer fight.
How Onmyo Magic and Soul Cores work
The Onmyo Box draws power from stored yokai Soul Cores to generate talismans. Yokai can drop Soul Cores, but a newly acquired Core must be purified by praying at a shrine before it can be used. Yin enables magic; Yang improves the Core’s other benefits
A Soul Core placed in Yin enables that Core’s corresponding Onmyo Magic. A Core in Yang instead provides Attack and Defense boosts and special effects; under certain conditions it can also provide a Summoning Seal. These are distinct uses of the Core, so choose its position according to whether you need its magic or its Yang benefits. The available magic depends on the Core. The official pages do not publish a complete Core-to-spell list, so check the current Onmyo Box in-game rather than relying on a universal mapping.
Ready, cast, and restore
- At a shrine: purify newly acquired Soul Cores and place the Core whose Onmyo Magic you want in Yin.
- Before combat: select the available Onmyo Magic in the Items menu or assign it to an item shortcut. Controls can differ by platform and your bindings, so use the in-game menu rather than assuming a single button.
- During combat: use the prepared item when the encounter calls for its effect.
- When uses run out: pray at a shrine to restore Onmyo Magic uses.
The manual also says Core enhancement becomes available at a shrine later in the game.

Which talisman to use, and when
Think in terms of the problem you need to solve, not a universal tier list. Practical recommendations below are situational guidance from secondary guides; confirm the current effect and availability in your game.

For “best locations to cast,” use tactical contexts rather than assuming a particular mission coordinate is optimal: prepare control before a chokepoint or dangerous group, use Ki-focused utility where Yokai Realm effects are relevant, and apply a debuff or elemental setup when a boss opening gives you time. The official sources describe the system, not a definitive map of named cast locations.

Choose a setup that fits the encounter
Each Core and shortcut slot carries an opportunity cost. A Core in Yin readies its magic; a Core in Yang instead contributes its Attack/Defense benefits, special effects, and potentially a Summoning Seal. Consider these trade-offs before leaving a shrine:
- Purpose: decide whether you need damage, control, sustain, purification, an escape option, or a summon.
- Encounter: match the effect to a boss, group, Yokai Realm area, or exploration risk rather than equipping a spell just because it appears highly ranked.
- Preparation: make sure the intended Core is in Yin if you want its magic, and leave room on your item shortcuts if you need quick access.
- Recovery: account for shrine access when planning a stretch with repeated fights, since prayer restores uses.
Specific spell values and build rankings require caution. Nioh3.net’s guide identifies its recommendations as version v1.04 and was updated February 25, 2026; its numerical optimization advice is not established as current for the post-launch game. KOEI TECMO says the first DLC, Hell Rising, launched August 19, 2026 and added Onmyo Magic and Soul Cores. For exact effects, durations, resistance, Core mappings, and build rankings, check the current game rather than treating an older guide as definitive.

Summoning Seals and Crucible Wraiths
Onmyo Magic is not the only reason to keep a Soul Core equipped. The official system overview says defeating Crucible Wraiths unlocks talismans that summon and command the corresponding yokai. The manual ties the Summoning Seal to Yang-position Soul Cores under certain conditions. If you want to build around a summon, confirm the relevant Wraith is defeated and check the Core’s current Yang benefits in the Onmyo Box.
