The official manual confirms that weapons have distinct Attack, special-effect, Break, and Block values, but the manual pages available here do not provide a complete attribute-to-weapon chart or formula. For a reliable choice, check the scaling shown in your current game, then compare the weapon’s actual displayed values and moveset—not just its letter grade.
What weapon scaling means in Nioh 3
Scaling is the relationship between a character’s attributes and a weapon’s Attack. Attributes associated with a weapon can help determine how well it benefits from your character build. The exact contribution for each attribute, however, is not established by the official manual pages cited here; they do not publish a complete scaling table or mathematical formula.

That matters when comparing letter grades. A higher displayed grade can point toward a stronger attribute match, but the available official documentation does not establish that a higher grade by itself guarantees more damage in play. Use the grade as one clue, not as a substitute for the weapon’s displayed Attack and other properties.
Which stat should you prioritize?
Prioritize the attribute or attributes that your chosen weapon’s current in-game scaling display identifies, while checking what investing in them does for the rest of your build. The official manual pages reviewed here do not establish a complete list of attribute associations or enough detail to recommend a specific stat universally. Menu labels and balancing can depend on the game version, so verify them in your own build rather than relying on an unverified chart.

- Discover the new Sony exclusive PlayStation
- Every title available on Playstation 5 will support 4K resolution and deliver stunning graphics, fast-paced combat with 120fps frame gameplay, ultra-fast load times, and the ability to transfer data from the PS4 to resume the adventure where you left off.
- Open the character or status menu and note your current attributes.
- Inspect the weapon in the equipment or inventory menu. Check its displayed Attack and any attribute-scaling indicators available in your version.
- Compare candidate weapons at your current attributes, including their special effects, Break, and Block.
- If you are considering spending points, review the weapon’s scaling display again after changing the allocation, where the game permits previews. Compare the actual displayed values instead of assuming a particular grade produces a fixed damage increase.
How to compare weapons beyond their grade
The manual describes weapon-specific Attack, special effects, Break (the ability to break an enemy’s stance), and Block (how much Ki is lost while blocking). These are distinct considerations: a weapon can suit your build or preferred approach for reasons beyond its scaling indicator.
- Displayed Attack: Compare the actual value on the weapons you are considering.
- Break and Block: Consider how well the weapon supports stance pressure and blocking.
- Special effects and familiarity: The manual says weapon special effects strengthen as familiarity rises; it also says offering a weapon yields more Amrita as familiarity increases.
- Reach, speed, and moveset: Choose a weapon whose attack patterns and handling fit how you play.
- Attribute match: Use the current in-game scaling information to see whether your allocation supports the weapon, without assuming the grade alone determines practical damage.
Weapon types trade power, reach, and speed
The official manual’s weapon descriptions show why there is no single best weapon independent of playstyle. These descriptions are practical tradeoffs, not a ranking of damage or a claim about scaling strength.
Samurai weapons
- Sword: Balances Attack, reach, and speed.
- Spear: Offers long reach and wide-area attacks, but can leave openings.
- Odachi: Trades speed for reach and Attack power.
- Dual swords: Favor rapid repeated hits despite relatively low Attack power.
- Switchglaive: Changes form with stance.
- Axe: Is slow but has extremely high Attack power.
Ninja weapons
- Ninja sword: Trades Attack power and reach for swift attacks and rapid dodges.
- Hatchets: Can be used up close or thrown.
- Talons: Focus on quick successive attacks.
- Kusarigama: Combines a ranged weight with a quick sickle.
- Splitstaves: Have exceptional reach and transform during attacks.
- Tonfa: Uses quick attacks and applies pressure to enemy Ki.
Samurai and Ninja equipment can be configured separately
The manual says weapons, armor, accessories, and Guardian Spirits can be equipped separately between Samurai and Ninja Style. If you use both styles, inspect the equipment and scaling information for each setup rather than assuming one allocation or loadout is the right fit for both.
What the official documentation does not establish
The Koei Tecmo / Gamecity Nioh 3 Official Web Manual documents weapon properties and type-specific tradeoffs, but the relevant pages do not supply a complete attribute-by-weapon scaling chart, a formula translating a letter grade into Attack, or verified soft caps. Consequently, exact coefficients, universal stat priorities, and patch-specific numerical advice should be checked against the current game rather than inferred from the manual.
