Reviews of the Nioh games tend to converge on one point: their fast, demanding combat rewards learning weapons, builds, and enemy patterns, but the steep learning curve and repetition can put some players off. If you mean the original Nioh, the latest game, or the series overall, the distinction matters: Nioh 3 launched for PC and PS5 on February 6, 2026, while the PS5 remaster of the first game is a separate release with its own edition details.
What do reviews say about Nioh?
Reviews of the original Nioh often praise its demanding, tactical combat, weapon mastery, and setting. The same qualities that make it rewarding can also make it frustrating: critics have pointed to grind, repeated content, and a steep learning curve. These are recurring themes, not a unanimous verdict.

Metacritic’s Nioh page listed 100 critic reviews when accessed in 2026 and labeled user reception “Generally Favorable.” That critic-review count is not itself a score, and the site’s user score and rating count can change. The page’s review excerpts reflect the split: praise for combat and atmosphere alongside criticism of grind or frustration. Metacritic’s Nioh review page
Is Nioh worth playing?
Nioh is a strong fit if you enjoy action games where improvement comes from learning timing, managing combat resources, and getting more out of a weapon or build. Reviewers commonly treat combat depth as a major strength. It is a less obvious choice if you want a consistently relaxed pace or dislike repeating encounters while learning a difficult system; reviews identify those demands as real drawbacks.

“Soulslike” is a useful shorthand for the challenge and deliberate tactical play, but it does not settle whether Nioh will feel like another game in the genre. The review themes here emphasize weapon-specific mastery, customization, and combat speed. Consider those systems—not just the difficulty label—when deciding whether it suits you.
How does Nioh 3 review?
Nioh 3 released on February 6, 2026, for PC and PS5. Reviews highlight its combat depth, weapon movesets, and build variety, while also raising concerns about clutter, repetitive side activities, balance, and PC performance. These are individual reviewers’ judgments rather than laboratory findings or a balanced aggregate comparison across the series.
Rank #2
| Review | What the reviewer praised | What the reviewer questioned | Platform and performance context |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC Gamer | Weapon movesets, build-crafting, and expanded environments | Map clutter, collectibles, and repeated side activity | The reviewer completed the game on a specified PC setup; performance observations apply to that setup. |
| TechRadar | Fast combat and build variety | Some balance choices; the reviewer found Ninja Style comparatively strong | Reviewed on PC; the reviewer reported inconsistent performance on their setup, which included an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060. This is a reviewer’s experience, not a general performance benchmark. |
The two reviews point to a practical distinction for PC players: a reviewer’s experience on a particular machine cannot guarantee how the game will run on another configuration. The available review observations differ, so they do not establish one universal PC-performance verdict.
Is Nioh too difficult?
It can be, especially if you expect to succeed without adapting. Reviews describe the original as demanding and rewarding patient, tactical play. Its challenge is tied to learning combat and weapons, while the criticism of grind and repetition matters if you would rather move through a game without revisiting content. The useful question is not whether Nioh is “hard” in the abstract, but whether you enjoy improving through deliberate practice.
Rank #3
For Nioh 3, reviewers also emphasize depth and build variety, but those strengths do not remove the learning curve. Difficulty and balance judgments remain reviewer-specific; TechRadar’s assessment of Ninja Style, for example, is an observation from that review rather than a definitive ranking for every player.
Which Nioh edition should you buy?
For the first game on PlayStation, distinguish the PS5 remaster from the PS4 Complete Edition. The US PlayStation Store listing for Nioh Remastered – The Complete Edition identifies it as a PS5 release dated February 5, 2021. The listing says it includes all add-ons and expansions, supports cross-generation multiplayer, and allows PS4 save import. It also describes gameplay targeting 120fps with a compatible display; that is a feature claim for this listed PS5 version, not a performance guarantee for all platforms or setups. - Fight to survive in this brutally savage masocore action roleplaying game
- Unleash your inner demon to wield the devastating powers of the supernatural yokai
- Discover a revamped combat system with new weapons and skills
- Journey through the mysterious Dark Realm: the demonic home of the yokai
- Play with friends in co op online multiplayer modes for up to three players
The same US storefront lists a separate PS4 release called Nioh – The Complete Edition. Do not assume the PS4 and PS5 listings are the same product or that PS5-specific features apply to the PS4 version. Store prices, ratings, and subscription availability can change.
GameSpot’s 2021 remaster update discusses 4K/60fps and up-to-120fps modes and faster loading, while relaying a Digital Foundry observation that “PS5 mode” runs at lower resolution. These are attributed observations from that report, not current testing across every display or update. GameSpot’s Nioh remaster coverage
