A Nitrox server that will not let friends join usually fails at one of five points: the server never started, the game and Nitrox versions do not match, Windows blocked the executables, UDP port 11000 is not reachable from the internet, or the client is using the wrong address field. Test those layers in order, starting with a local connection, before changing router settings.

Find the failure point before changing settings
Nitrox multiplayer problems look similar from the client, but the remedy depends on where the connection stops. Use this sequence to identify the layer that is failing.

1. Make sure every player is on a compatible build
Version mismatches can prevent a session from appearing or cause a connection to fail before networking is involved. Nitrox release line 1.8.1.0 supports players using Subnautica from Epic Games, Steam, and the Microsoft Store when they are on the latest supported Subnautica version. That release line removed support for older Subnautica versions, so the host and every client must use a compatible game version and the same compatible Nitrox build.
What to check
- Update Subnautica on every computer through its normal game launcher.
- Install the same Nitrox release on the host and all clients; do not mix an older launcher with a newer server.
- Remove or disable old Nitrox installations that the launcher might accidentally open.
- If one player uses a different store edition, confirm that edition is supported by the Nitrox release you are running.
Do this before port forwarding. A router cannot fix a client that is rejected because its game or Nitrox protocol is incompatible.

2. Start the server and read its output
The server must be healthy before a friend can connect. Launch the Nitrox server and leave its console window open. A normal startup should reach a ready state without critical errors; the launcher should then expose the Multiplayer button.
If the server window reports an error
- Read the first critical error, not only the final shutdown message. The first failure often identifies the missing file, wrong directory, or occupied port.
- Verify that Nitrox points to the real Subnautica installation directory. A moved library, a second store installation, or a drive-letter change can leave the launcher pointing at a path that no longer exists.
- Check whether another application is already using the server port. A second Nitrox server, a previous process that did not close cleanly, or another UDP service can produce an “Address already in use” condition.
- When the installation uses a nonstandard data location, use Nitrox’s
--data-pathoption so the server can find its data directory. The option is specifically called out in the 1.8.1.0 release notes for path-related startup failures. - Confirm that the Subnautica files required by Nitrox are present. A container deployment can fail simply because the game files were not mounted or copied into the expected location.
Do not give a friend an address while the server is still failing at startup. Remote connection attempts cannot succeed until the server has bound its listening socket.
3. Restore the Multiplayer button when it is missing
A missing Multiplayer button points to a launcher or installation problem rather than an internet-routing problem. The game has not completed Nitrox’s multiplayer bootstrap, so forwarding a port will not help yet.
- Open the Nitrox launcher and reselect the folder that contains the active Subnautica installation.
- Start the game through Nitrox rather than through the ordinary Subnautica shortcut.
- Confirm that the server executable can see the same installation path as the launcher.
- Close duplicate launchers and stale server processes, then start Nitrox again.
- Inspect Nitrox logs in
%APPDATA%Nitroxlogs. - When the Nitrox log does not explain the bootstrap failure, inspect Subnautica’s
Player.logas well.
Fixing the path or installation first also prevents misleading firewall tests: Windows may have an exception for one copy of Subnautica.exe while Nitrox is launching another.

4. Test locally before testing the internet
A local test separates game and launcher faults from router faults. On the host computer, use the “My server” route with 127.0.0.1 (also called localhost) in the Nitrox setup. If the host cannot join its own server, stop working on port forwarding and return to the server console, game path, and logs.
Interpret the local result
- Localhost fails: the server is not ready, the address is wrong, the local firewall is blocking the process, or the Nitrox installation is damaged.
- Localhost works but another computer on the same network fails: test the host’s private LAN address, then check Windows Firewall on the host and client. The server may be listening only locally, or the firewall may be allowing loopback traffic but blocking LAN traffic.
- LAN works but an internet friend fails: the game and server are probably functional. Concentrate on UDP forwarding, the host’s external address, firewall scope, and ISP-level NAT.
5. Allow Nitrox and Subnautica through the firewall
The official hosting guidance calls for firewall exceptions for both Subnautica.exe and NitroxServer-Subnautica.exe. Create or verify the exceptions on the machines involved, especially the host. A rule that permits the game but not the Nitrox server can leave the server apparently running while silently dropping join traffic.

Firewall checklist
- Allow the exact executable launched from the current Subnautica installation, not an obsolete copy in another library.
- Allow
NitroxServer-Subnautica.exefor the network profiles you actually use. A rule limited to Private networks will not help if Windows classifies the active connection as Public. - When testing, temporarily check whether a third-party security suite has its own application-control rule. If it does, add the same two executables there.
- After changing a rule, restart the server so it binds again under the new permission.
Firewall permissions are required even when the router is configured correctly. Port forwarding delivers a packet to the host; the local firewall still decides whether the server process may receive it.
6. Open the correct port for internet hosting
Nitrox uses UDP port 11000. For a self-hosted internet server, the router must forward incoming UDP traffic on port 11000 to the host computer’s private LAN address. The host’s firewall must also allow the Nitrox server.

Port-forwarding requirements
- Give the host a stable private address, either with a DHCP reservation in the router or a carefully configured static address.
- Create a rule for UDP, not only TCP, with external port
11000and internal port11000. - Point the rule at the correct host address. If the computer receives a new private address, the old rule will target the wrong device.
- Keep the server running while testing from outside the home network.
- Do not assume that a router’s “gaming” preset forwards the required protocol; verify that the resulting rule explicitly says UDP 11000.
When forwarding is impossible
Some ISPs place customers behind carrier-grade NAT, which means the home router does not receive a public address and cannot accept an inbound mapping. A managed router, apartment network, or ISP policy can create the same limitation. In those cases, Nitrox’s official guidance lists a VPN-based virtual LAN as an alternative. Every participant generally needs the same VPN client, and the virtual network must allow the host’s UDP traffic. This approach avoids inbound forwarding but adds another application, another firewall surface, and a dependency on the VPN network remaining available.
Direct forwarding or a virtual LAN?

Neither method fixes a server that cannot start locally. Choose forwarding when you control the router and have a reachable public address; choose a virtual LAN when the ISP or network prevents inbound mappings.

Once the server is running and reachable, the client still has to use the right address. The host should provide the address shown by the Nitrox setup for the chosen connection method: 127.0.0.1 for the host’s own local test, a private LAN address for a same-network test, or the host’s externally reachable address for an internet friend.
Do not append a port blindly
A Nitrox issue documents a server-entry workflow in which the address field should not include :11000. In that workflow, enter the address in the format the launcher requests and let Nitrox apply its configured UDP port. Adding a port suffix to a field that expects only an address can produce “Unable to connect to the remote server” even when forwarding is correct.

If the host has several network adapters, VPNs, or virtual machines, confirm that the supplied address belongs to the interface reachable by the client. A private address copied from the host will not work for a friend on the public internet.
8. Troubleshoot “Unable to connect to the remote server”
This message is a symptom, not a single diagnosis. Work from the server outward instead of repeatedly retrying the same join.
- Ask the host to confirm that the Nitrox server window is still running and has no critical error.
- Confirm that the host and client use compatible Nitrox and Subnautica versions.
- Have the client re-enter the address exactly as supplied by the host, without adding a port suffix when the launcher field does not support one.
- For a LAN test, use the host’s private address; for an internet test, use the externally reachable address after UDP 11000 forwarding is active.
- Verify firewall exceptions for
Subnautica.exeandNitroxServer-Subnautica.exeon the host. - Check the router’s forwarding target and confirm that the host’s private address has not changed.
- If local and LAN tests work but internet access still fails, investigate double NAT or carrier-grade NAT and consider the virtual-LAN alternative.
9. Recognize port conflicts and path failures
“Address already in use”
This means another process has already claimed the listening address or port. Close duplicate Nitrox server windows, end a stale server process, and restart Nitrox. If the condition returns, identify which application is binding the port and stop it or move that application; do not keep changing the client’s address.
“DirectoryNotFound” or missing Subnautica files
These errors indicate that the server cannot locate a required directory or game file. Recheck the launcher game path, verify the files through the store’s repair function, and make sure a container or separate server environment has the Subnautica files mounted where Nitrox expects them. For a deliberately relocated data directory, configure the server with its --data-path option.

The server starts, then exits
Read the console from the first exception onward and inspect %APPDATA%Nitroxlogs. A server that exits before opening its listening port cannot be made reachable by a router rule.

A successful join does not mean every Subnautica system is fully synchronized. Nitrox 1.8.1.0 lists known gaps involving story PDA and terminals, creatures, Cyclops health, player animations, scanner rooms, fires, and sleep. If the connection succeeds and one of these systems behaves differently for different players, compare the symptom with that known-issues list before changing forwarding or reinstalling the game.
Examples of a successful connection with a gameplay limitation
- A player can enter the world, but a story PDA or terminal state does not match another player’s state.
- Creatures, fire effects, or scanner-room information appear inconsistent between clients.
- Cyclops health, sleep behavior, or player animations do not update identically for everyone.
These symptoms belong to synchronization behavior, not necessarily to a blocked port. Separate “cannot join” from “joined but a feature is imperfect” when reporting or diagnosing the problem.
A complete setup order that avoids wasted troubleshooting
- Align versions: update Subnautica and install the same compatible Nitrox build for every participant.
- Verify the path: point Nitrox at the active Subnautica installation and confirm the required files exist.
- Start the server: wait for a ready state and resolve critical console errors first.
- Check the launcher: confirm the Multiplayer button appears.
- Test localhost: connect with
127.0.0.1on the host. - Test the LAN: have another computer use the host’s private address, with firewall exceptions active.
- Choose internet transport: forward UDP
11000or establish a VPN-based virtual LAN. - Use the correct remote address: enter the host’s externally reachable address in the launcher field exactly as expected, without an unrequested
:11000suffix. - Interpret the result: if joining works but a listed system is inconsistent, treat it as a synchronization limitation rather than a network failure.
What to collect when you still need help
A useful report should let someone identify the failing layer without guessing. Record the Nitrox version, Subnautica store edition, whether localhost and LAN tests work, the exact server-console error, and whether the host is behind another router or carrier-grade NAT. Include relevant entries from %APPDATA%Nitroxlogs and Subnautica’s Player.log, while removing personal paths or other sensitive information. State whether the failure occurs before joining or only after gameplay begins; those are different classes of problem.
