Terralith is a Java Edition world-generation overhaul available as a mod or a datapack. Install the file that matches your exact Minecraft version and loader, enable it before creating a new world, and keep it enabled for that world’s entire life. Terralith changes terrain, biomes, structures and caves so substantially that adding it to an established save—or removing it later—can create mismatched chunks and damaged world generation.

What Terralith changes in Minecraft

Terralith replaces much of the ordinary overworld generation while retaining a recognizably vanilla style. Stardust Labs describes the project as a landscape transformation designed to fit the existing Minecraft experience. In practice, you get far more varied elevations, biome transitions, rock formations and underground spaces than in an unmodified world.

  • At least 85 new biomes are advertised on the current Stardust Labs project page.
  • The CurseForge description says the project adds more than 95 brand-new biomes and updates almost every vanilla biome.
  • Custom structures, volcanoes, natural arches, dramatic valleys and expanded cave environments are part of the generation overhaul.
  • The project is documented for Minecraft Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition.

The two biome counts should not be merged into one number. They come from different project-page descriptions and may use different counting methods or page revisions. Treat “85+” and “over 95” as source-qualified figures rather than a promise that every release contains one fixed total.

Check these details before downloading

World-generation files are tightly tied to software versions. Write down the following before opening a download page:

#1 Best Overall
Minecraft | Java & Bedrock Deluxe Collection | Windows Digital Code
  • DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
  • CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
  • EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
  • SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
  • PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
  • Your Minecraft Java Edition version, such as 1.20.x or 1.21.x.
  • The loader used by your instance: Fabric, Forge, NeoForge or Quilt.
  • Whether you want the mod build or the datapack build.
  • Every other terrain, biome or structure project that will be active in the same world.
  • The Terralith release named by any seed guide you intend to use.

Project pages change quickly as new Minecraft lines are released. Select the file whose supported-game-version field exactly matches your instance, and check its dependency list immediately before launching. A file made for a nearby version is not automatically interchangeable.

Mod or datapack: which installation should you use?

Choice What you need Best fit Important limitation
Mod A compatible Fabric, Forge, NeoForge or Quilt installation, plus any dependency listed for that Terralith file Players who already use a mod loader, want straightforward sharing with friends, or need loader-based configuration Dependencies can change by release. Modrinth records Lithostitched for the 2.6.0 mod build.
Datapack Java Edition and the datapack download matching the Minecraft release Players who want to use vanilla’s datapack workflow without installing a mod loader Datapack add-ons may require a particular load order, and the pack must remain enabled for the world’s lifetime.

A project FAQ recommends the mod package for the specific loader when possible because it is easier to install and distribute to a group. The datapack remains a useful alternative when a loader is not practical.

Install Terralith as a mod

  1. Install the loader first. Set up the Fabric, Forge, NeoForge or Quilt profile for the exact Minecraft version you recorded. Launch that profile once without Terralith so the instance creates its folders.
  2. Open the correct project page. Use the official Terralith listing on CurseForge or Modrinth and select a file that names your Minecraft version and loader. Do not assume that a Fabric file works in Forge or that a 1.20 file works in 1.21.
  3. Read the dependency panel. Install every dependency shown for that file. For example, Modrinth documents Lithostitched as a dependency of the Terralith 2.6.0 mod build. Requirements for another Terralith version can differ.
  4. Copy the files to the instance. Place the Terralith jar and its required dependency jars in that instance’s mods folder. If you use a launcher with separate instances, verify that you opened the folder for the profile you actually play.
  5. Launch once for a loader check. Start the game with the selected profile and confirm that the mod appears in the loader’s mod list or title-screen mod menu. A missing dependency, wrong loader or wrong game version normally produces an immediate error before the main menu.
  6. Create a new world. Install and verify Terralith before generating the world. Select your seed, game mode and other options only after the mod has loaded successfully.

Do not copy the jar into an existing save and expect only unexplored chunks to change cleanly. The project guidance specifically says to reset or use a new world instead.

Install Terralith as a datapack

  1. Download the Stardust Labs datapack that matches the Minecraft release you will run. A datapack made for a different release can fail to load or produce incorrect generation.
  2. Start a new Java Edition world and open the world-creation screen’s datapack selection. Add Terralith before confirming world creation, or place the pack in that world’s datapacks folder according to your current Minecraft workflow.
  3. Enable the pack and verify it with the in-game /datapack list command after entering the world. The command should show Terralith as enabled; an entry in the folder alone does not prove that Minecraft accepted it.
  4. If you use an official add-on, follow its instructions for ordering. When an add-on must override Terralith files, place or load the add-on above Terralith so its data takes priority.
  5. Generate the world only after the pack and any add-ons are enabled. Keep them enabled for the lifetime of that save.

Datapack installation does not make the existing-world warning go away. The same terrain-generation data is being changed, so adding or removing the pack after exploration can leave borders and structures inconsistent.

  • ULTIMATE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, five Bedrock add-ons, five exclusive Character Creator items, and 1000 Minecoins.
  • CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
  • EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.

Why a new world is required

Terralith determines which biome, terrain shape, cave and structure data Minecraft uses while chunks are generated. Chunks already saved to disk retain the old result. If you add Terralith later, newly generated areas can use a completely different generator next to old areas, producing abrupt walls, biome seams, missing structures and other chunk-border artifacts.

The reverse operation is also unsafe. Modrinth’s project warning states, “You CANNOT remove Terralith from an existing world!” Removing the pack or jar does not convert generated chunks back to vanilla; it merely makes future generation use a different set of rules. Keep a backup before testing a different installation, and treat each major combination as a separate world.

  • Safe approach: install the complete set first, then create the world.
  • Testing approach: duplicate the instance and generate a disposable test world before committing to a long-term survival save.
  • Unsafe approach: adding Terralith to an established save, removing it after exploration, or changing companion world-generation projects mid-playthrough.

Features and optional configuration

Biomes and terrain

The headline feature is the large biome expansion, but the practical difference is how those biomes are arranged. Terralith produces more pronounced mountain ranges, deep valleys, unusual coastlines and varied slopes than standard generation. Volcanoes and arches provide recognizable landmarks, while updated vanilla biomes help the new regions blend into familiar areas.

Structures and caves

Custom structures are generated alongside the terrain rather than being a separate decorative layer. Caves also receive new forms and visual environments, so exploration and underground building can feel substantially different from a vanilla seed.

Mod-build options in modern releases

Modrinth documents configuration controls for the 2.6.0 mod build, including custom structures, fog adjustments, the introductory message and skylands. The exact screen and option names can change with the release, so use the configuration file or in-game menu supplied with your installed version rather than copying settings from an older tutorial.

Official add-ons

Add-on Purpose When to choose it
No Structures Disables Terralith’s custom structures while retaining the terrain overhaul. Useful for builders or servers that want landscape changes without additional landmarks.
Extra Recipes Adds recipes associated with the Terralith ecosystem. Choose it only when the extra crafting progression fits your playthrough.
ReStoned Changes stone and related underground materials. Use it when you want the matching underground block treatment; check its version and load-order instructions.

Loader and mod compatibility

Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt

Distribution pages list Terralith files for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. Compatibility is file-specific: a loader being supported in general does not mean every Terralith release supports every loader. Match all three labels—Minecraft version, Terralith version and loader—before downloading.

Tectonic and Terratonic

Tectonic is another world-generation project, so combining it with Terralith changes the output again. Terralith’s compatibility guidance distinguishes its mod combination from datapack use and names Terratonic for a datapack combination. Do not install a mod pair simply because a datapack guide mentions the same names; the data-pack and mod implementations can have different dependencies and priorities.

When a seed source says “Terralith/Tectonic,” regard that phrase as part of the seed’s specification. Removing Tectonic, adding a different terrain pack or switching from a mod to a datapack can move mountains, villages and biome boundaries even when the numeric seed stays identical.

Terrablender and other biome projects

Biome and world-generation projects can overlap in the same registries and generation stages. Read the compatibility notes for the exact versions you are combining, test the combination in a disposable world, and expect that an officially supported pair may still produce a different landscape than either project alone.

How to use Terralith seeds honestly

There is no universal “best Terralith seed.” A seed is a deterministic input, but the resulting world also depends on the Minecraft release, Terralith release, loader or datapack implementation, and every companion world-generation project. Coordinates are therefore version-scoped. A location that contains a village beside a mountain in a 1.20 setup is not guaranteed to contain the same features in a current 1.21 setup.

Seed lists currently circulating are primarily scoped to Minecraft 1.20 and to Terralith/Tectonic combinations. Use those entries as examples only when your installation matches every version named by the source. The available evidence does not establish a current-release table of independently verified coordinates, so a seed should never be presented as guaranteed across releases.

Choose a seed by the world you want

Goal What to look for Verification method
Dramatic mountain or valley base A seed description that names the exact Terralith and Minecraft versions and shows the desired range or valley. Generate the seed with the same mod or datapack set, then inspect the listed coordinates before starting survival.
Buildable flat land Plateaus, broad valleys, plains or gently sloped biome transitions rather than a screenshot taken from a cliff. Check several hundred blocks around the proposed base; Terralith’s nearby terrain can change quickly.
Villages and early resources A source that reports village coordinates and the structure’s biome context for your exact version. Teleport or use a creative copy to confirm the village, caves and access routes before committing.
Unusual caves and underground builds Seed notes that identify the cave type and entrance coordinates, not just an attractive surface screenshot. Enter the cave in the matching generation setup and verify that its height and blocks are present.
Tectonic-compatible terrain A seed explicitly tested with the named Tectonic release and the Terralith/Terratonic arrangement. Install both projects in the documented form and preserve their stated load order.

A reliable seed-checking procedure

  1. Copy the seed number exactly, including a minus sign if present.
  2. Record the source’s Minecraft version, Terralith version, loader or datapack form, and companion mods.
  3. Recreate that software set in a separate test instance. Do not check a 1.20 seed in a 1.21 world and call the result equivalent.
  4. Generate a copy of the world in creative mode and visit each advertised coordinate.
  5. Check the features that matter to you—terrain scale, village position, structure presence, cave entrance and buildable space—rather than relying on the thumbnail.
  6. Only then create the permanent survival world with the same files and settings.

If a seed page omits the Terralith release or companion-mod list, treat its coordinates as unverified for your installation. Changing one generation component is enough to invalidate a location.

Troubleshooting common installation problems

The game crashes before the main menu

  • Confirm that the jar’s Minecraft version matches the profile exactly.
  • Confirm that you downloaded the file for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge or Quilt that you actually installed.
  • Read the crash report for a missing dependency. For Terralith 2.6.0’s mod build, Modrinth lists Lithostitched; another release may list something else.
  • Remove duplicate or older Terralith jars from the same mods folder.

Terralith does not appear in the world

  • For a mod, verify that the launcher started the modded profile rather than a vanilla profile.
  • For a datapack, run /datapack list and check that Terralith is enabled.
  • Ensure the datapack was not left inside an extra nested folder after extraction.
  • Create a fresh test world. A pre-existing vanilla world will not retroactively convert its generated chunks.

Only some areas look different

This usually indicates mixed generation: old chunks were created before Terralith was enabled, or a companion project was changed later. Restore a backup made before the change or start a new world with a fixed file set. Exploring farther away does not repair the border.

An add-on has no visible effect

Check that the add-on supports your Terralith and Minecraft versions and that it is loaded above Terralith when its instructions require an override. A datapack priority problem can leave the base pack working while silently ignoring the add-on’s files.

Running Terralith in multiplayer

Every player must use the same Minecraft version, loader, Terralith release and companion files. For a modded server, install the server-side loader, Terralith jar and dependencies in the server’s corresponding folders; clients normally need the same required files. For a datapack server, install Terralith in the world directory before anyone explores and distribute any required client-side additions separately.

Do not switch the server from the mod build to the datapack build after players have explored. Although both are called Terralith, their packaging and dependency behavior can differ. Keep a tested backup and document the exact file versions used to generate the world.

Stardust Labs currently promotes Bisect Hosting with a 25% offer using the code STARDUST. The promotion’s terms and availability can change, so verify them directly before relying on the discount; it is not a requirement for running Terralith.
