If nivisv32.dll is missing, Windows usually cannot start an application that uses NI-VISA for instrument communication. The safest fix is to identify that application and repair or reinstall its matching NI-VISA installation, rather than downloading the DLL by itself.
What this file actually does
nivisv32.dll, also written as NiViSv32.dll or NIVISV32.dll in error messages, is associated with NI-VISA, National Instruments software that allows applications to communicate with laboratory and test equipment.
NI-VISA implements the VISA standard for devices connected through interfaces including:
- GPIB
- USB
- Serial
- Ethernet and LXI
- VXI
- PXI
The file is a 32-bit component. It is not a Windows system file and does not come from Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.

A vendor may package NI-VISA components inside its own installer, so the program showing the error is not necessarily an NI-branded application. The important question is which executable is trying to load the file.
Do not treat an exact file size, version, or installation folder found on a DLL-index page as universal. Those details vary between NI-VISA releases and the application that installed them.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| Error or symptom | What it usually indicates | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because NiViSv32.dll is missing” | NI-VISA was removed, never installed, or the application was deployed incompletely | Repair or install the required NI-VISA package |
| “The code execution cannot proceed because nivisv32.dll was not found” | The Windows loader cannot find this file or a related component | Repair the complete application or NI-VISA installation |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The named DLL may exist, but one of its dependencies is missing | Repair NI-VISA and inspect antivirus history |
| “The ordinal 126 could not be located in the dynamic library NIVISV32.dll” | Incompatible versions of NI-VISA components are being mixed | Reinstall a matching VISA stack |
| “The ordinal 18 could not be located in the dynamic library NIVISV32.dll” | A version mismatch between the application and VISA libraries | Install the application’s supported NI-VISA version |
| “visaLocalTmo could not be located in the dynamic link library NIVISV32” | Related VISA components do not expose the expected function | Repair or reinstall the complete VISA installation |
| “visa32.dll was not found” | The application cannot find another core VISA library | Repair NI-VISA rather than copying only visa32.dll |
| “visa32.dll was found but could not be loaded” | A dependency, architecture, or compatibility problem exists | Check 32-bit support and reinstall matching components |
An ordinal error is not an ordinary missing-file error. It means the program found a DLL but did not find the function entry point it expected. Copying a newer or older DLL over it can make the mismatch worse.
Fix nivisv32.dll errors in order
1. Identify the program that owns the error
Before changing files, record the application name and executable path.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Close the error window.
- Start the affected program again and note its exact name.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Details.
- If the program appears briefly, right-click it and select Open file location.
- Write down the executable name and installation folder.
- Check whether the folder belongs to LabVIEW, Measurement Studio, NI MAX, a test instrument vendor, or another engineering application.
Next, check installed software:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for NI-VISA, NI Package Manager, Measurement & Automation Explorer, LabVIEW, or the instrument vendor’s software.
- On Windows 10, use Settings → Apps → Apps & features if the newer page is not available.
- If necessary, open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features and search there too.
If a copy of nivisv32.dll exists, right-click it, select Properties, and open Details. Check the digital signature under the Digital Signatures tab when available. This helps distinguish a file installed by a legitimate application from an unrelated replacement.
2. Repair NI-VISA or the parent application
Repair is the safest first change because it can restore missing files and related configuration without manually mixing DLLs.
Repair through Windows
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for NI-VISA or the affected instrument application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the entry.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Advanced options, depending on what Windows displays.
- Complete the repair wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application and NI MAX.
For older installations:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs → Programs and Features.
- Select the NI-VISA or application entry.
- Select Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart the computer.
If NI Package Manager is installed, use its installed-product repair or reinstall controls. Do not combine files from a standalone installer with files from a different NI Package Manager release.
A repair may not replace every existing VISA file if Windows considers that file present. If visa32.dll or nivisv32.dll is present but incompatible, install the newer compatible package required by the application rather than repeatedly running the same repair.

Use the application’s compatibility requirements when choosing the package. NI’s download page distinguishes operating-system support, NI-VISA version, application bitness, and language. There is no single universal nivisv32.dll package that is correct for every program.
Use this sequence:
- Close the affected application, NI MAX, and other NI programs.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Locate NI-VISA or the application that supplied it.
- Select Uninstall only if repair and a direct reinstall are not available.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Run the correct NI-VISA installer as an administrator.
- If the application vendor supplied a complete installer, prefer that installer because it may include a tested VISA Runtime Engine.
- Restart again.
- Open NI MAX and verify that the expected VISA resources appear.
- Launch the original application.
For a deployed application, the required component may be the NI-VISA Runtime Engine, not the full development environment. A vendor that omitted the runtime from its installer must provide a corrected installer or instructions for installing the matching runtime. Copying one DLL into the application folder is not an equivalent deployment method.
4. Check for a conflicting VISA implementation
A second VISA product can change which 32-bit VISA implementation is primary. Common examples include TekVISA, Keysight VISA, and Agilent IO Libraries.
This can produce missing, loading, or ordinal errors even when nivisv32.dll is physically present. Only one 32-bit VISA implementation can be primary at a time.
Check for a recent installation or update:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for TekVISA, Keysight, Agilent IO Libraries, and other instrument suites.
- Note anything installed shortly before the error began.
- Open NI MAX.
- Inspect its VISA configuration and preferred or primary VISA setting, if available.
- Select the VISA implementation required by the affected application.
- Apply the change and restart the application.
- If the conflict remains, repair or remove the conflicting product using its vendor’s instructions.
- Reinstall the complete compatible NI-VISA stack if required.
Do not delete visa32.dll, nivisv32.dll, or related files by hand. A vendor’s uninstall and repair process must update the associated configuration as a group.
A documented example involves Keithley’s Automated Characterization Suite, where incompatible Keithley and NI-VISA software versions caused ordinal errors involving NIVISV32.dll. That kind of message points to a compatibility problem, not simply an absent file.
5. Confirm the application architecture
NiViSv32.dll is a 32-bit DLL.
A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows through WOW64, but a 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL. This is why installing 64-bit software alone may not repair a 32-bit instrument application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo check the application:
- Open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click the column headings and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform if Windows provides that column.
- Start the affected application and check whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
You can also inspect the application’s documentation or installer options. Some NI and vendor installers expose separate application-bitness choices.
Install the 32-bit NI-VISA support required by the application. Let the installer place files in the correct Windows and application locations. Do not use the names System32 and SysWOW64 to guess where to copy a DLL. Their naming is counterintuitive, and manual placement can create a second, conflicting copy.

If the application itself is obsolete and only supports 32-bit VISA, use its documented compatibility requirements rather than forcing it to load a 64-bit library.
6. Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate component after an update or scan.

- Look for an event involving
nivisv32.dll, NI-VISA, or the affected application. - Confirm the file path and the installer source.
- Restore it only if the file came from a legitimate NI or application-vendor installer.
- Run a security scan after restoring it.
- Repair or reinstall NI-VISA afterward so the complete installation is validated.
Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the error. If the origin is unclear, leave it quarantined and reinstall from the official source.
7. Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They normally do not recreate a third-party NI-VISA DLL, so use them as secondary measures, especially if Windows itself has other corruption symptoms.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If both commands report that Windows files are healthy but the NI application still fails, return to the NI-VISA repair or reinstall path.
If manually hunting through Windows repair commands is becoming repetitive, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows issues and show what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the NI-VISA-owning application remains the definitive fix for this DLL.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →8. Reinstall related instrument drivers only when indicated
A device driver reinstall is appropriate when the error began after changing hardware, installing an instrument driver, or updating an instrument suite. It is not the normal first fix for a missing nivisv32.dll.
To inspect devices:
- Press
Win+X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, Ports (COM & LPT), Network adapters, or the vendor-specific category.
- Look for a warning icon or the affected instrument.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Read the Device status message under General.
- Use Update driver only with the instrument vendor’s approved package.
- If the vendor specifically directs it, use Uninstall device, restart Windows, and install the supplied driver package.
- Reopen NI MAX and test the VISA resource.
Do not expect Device Manager to recreate an NI-VISA runtime library. If several hardware packages are involved and identifying the correct versions is difficult, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported driver issues; the driver installation is completed by the full version, while the instrument vendor’s supported driver package remains the authoritative choice.
9. Use System Restore for a recent software conflict
System Restore can help when the problem began immediately after installing a VISA implementation, driver, or Windows update.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the change.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review which applications, settings, or updates will be removed.
- Continue only if the consequences are acceptable.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
System Restore may remove later software and updates. It does not replace a correct NI-VISA installation, so reinstall NI-VISA afterward if the application still reports the DLL error.

Why downloading the DLL is a poor fix
Avoid isolated DLL downloads from random websites. They can contain malware, belong to the wrong NI-VISA release, use the wrong architecture, or lack the dependent visa32.dll and supporting components.

An isolated copy also cannot resolve:
- A missing VISA runtime
- A conflicting primary VISA implementation
- An ordinal mismatch
- A damaged installation
- A quarantined dependency
- An application deployed without its runtime
Use the original application installer, the application vendor’s supported runtime, or National Instruments’ official NI-VISA distribution instead. Do not mix DLLs from different releases.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 nivisv32.dll
If Windows reports that DllRegisterServer is missing, that confirms registration is not applicable. Repair or reinstall NI-VISA instead. Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a registration mechanism, not as a way to repair arbitrary runtime libraries.

What to collect if the error remains
Give the application or instrument vendor:
- The complete error text
- The executable name and full path
- Your Windows version
- The NI-VISA version
- Whether NI Package Manager or NI MAX is installed
- Whether TekVISA, Keysight VISA, Agilent IO Libraries, or another VISA suite was recently installed
- Whether the failure began after an update, uninstall, antivirus event, or hardware change
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The result of repairing or reinstalling NI-VISA
- Any ordinal number shown in the message
If every reinstall fails, the next step is to inspect the application’s dependency chain and NI MAX’s VISA configuration with the vendor. The parent application may require a specific older runtime, even when a newer general NI-VISA installation is present.
FAQ
Is nivisv32.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with NI-VISA or software that bundles NI-VISA. Windows does not supply it as a standard system component.
Can I fix the error by copying the DLL into System32?
Usually not, and doing so can create architecture and version conflicts. Install the complete compatible NI-VISA package and let its installer place the files.
Does a 64-bit Windows installation need the 32-bit file?
Yes, if the affected application is 32-bit. Windows bitness and application bitness are separate considerations.
Does nivisv32.dll work with any VISA installation?
Not necessarily. nivisv32.dll, visa32.dll, and the host application must be compatible. TekVISA, Keysight VISA, or Agilent IO Libraries can also change the primary 32-bit VISA implementation.
Will SFC repair this file?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not third-party NI-VISA components. Use it only when Windows has broader corruption symptoms.
What does an ordinal error mean?
It means the application loaded a DLL but could not find the function it expected. This usually indicates mismatched VISA versions rather than a simple missing file.
Should I reinstall the application or NI-VISA first?
Repair NI-VISA first when it is installed separately. If the application supplied its own runtime, use the vendor’s complete installer. Reinstalling only the application may leave a damaged shared VISA installation untouched.
