nl7lexicons0404.dll is a genuine Microsoft Traditional Chinese language-resource DLL. It is used by Windows language components and by search technologies such as SQL Server Full-Text Search and SharePoint, so the correct repair depends on which product is requesting it.
Which fix applies to you
Start with the location and program named in the error:
- The expected path is under
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64: repair the Traditional Chinese Windows language component, then run DISM and SFC. - The file belongs under an SQL Server instance’s
Binnfolder: repair that SQL Server instance using matching installation media. - The path points to SharePoint directories: repair or update the SharePoint installation.
- Windows Security shows the file in Protection history: verify its expected path and Microsoft signature before restoring it.
- A game or unrelated application requests it from its own folder: repair or reinstall that application through its official installer.
- The message says “specified module could not be found”: the named DLL may exist, but another dependency may be missing.
- The error affects only one Windows account: test another account before assuming that the system file is damaged.
Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL. A loose copy may contain malware, belong to another build, use the wrong architecture, or fail because the missing item is actually a dependency.

What nl7lexicons0404.dll is
The 0404 portion identifies Traditional Chinese, LCID 1028. It is a locale identifier, not a file version.
Microsoft’s SQL Server component table lists NL7Lexicons0404.dll as a dependent linguistic file for the Traditional Chinese word breaker. The main word-breaker component is MsWb70404.dll, with related files including NL7Data0404.dll and NL7Models0404.dll. The same resources can serve Chinese Hong Kong and Macao locales.
That makes this file different from:
- Microsoft Visual C++ runtime files
- DirectX files
- .NET assemblies
- ordinary device-driver DLLs
Windows language packages can supply the file, but Microsoft does not publish a complete current Windows build-by-build inventory for this filename. Match the repair to your installed Windows build rather than relying on an online version or architecture listing.

Check the popup and executable
Read the complete error carefully. Note:
- The executable named in the title or message.
- The folder where Windows expected the DLL.
- Whether the error appears during startup, login, search indexing, or a database operation.
- Whether it affects every account.
If the popup does not show a path, search the standard application locations from PowerShell. Open Start, type PowerShell, right-click Windows PowerShell, select Run as administrator, and run:
Get-ChildItem C:Windows,C:Program Files,C:Program Files (x86) `
-Filter NL7Lexicons0404.dll -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
Select-Object FullName,Length,LastWriteTime
A result under Windows points toward a language component. A result under an SQL Server Binn folder points toward SQL Server. A result in a SharePoint folder points toward SharePoint. A copy in an application folder should be repaired through that application.
Do not copy the first result you find into another directory. Different products can use different builds and architectures.
Fix 1: Reinstall the Traditional Chinese Windows component
Use this fix when the missing path is under Windows, or when the problem began after removing a language, changing regional settings, running cleanup software, or installing an update.
Install the language feature
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Select Add a language.
- Search for Chinese (Traditional) or the matching Traditional Chinese locale.
- Select it and choose Next.
- Keep the language features required by your system selected.
- Select Install.
- Restart Windows.
Windows may obtain the language files through Windows Update. On systems repaired from offline media, Microsoft also documents Traditional Chinese packages with names such as Microsoft-Windows-Client-Language-Pack_x64_zh-tw.cab and Microsoft-Windows-LanguageFeatures-Basic-zh-tw-Package~*.cab. The package must match the Windows image and platform.

Repair the Windows component store
After restarting, open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart again and launch the program that produced the error.
Success means the popup no longer appears and the related language or search function works normally. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and repeat the DISM command once, then run SFC again. If the issue remains, check the exact path and the Windows event logs rather than copying a DLL manually.
Repeatedly hunting through Windows packages and rerunning SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; its repair functions require the full version, and it is not a substitute for repairing the specific owning application.
Fix 2: Repair SQL Server Full-Text Search
Use this fix when the file belongs to an SQL Server instance, especially under a path containing Microsoft SQL Server, an instance name, and Binn.
Microsoft explicitly lists NL7Lexicons0404.dll as part of the Traditional Chinese SQL Server word-breaker resources. SQL Server 2022 and earlier use version-1 full-text components, while SQL Server 2025 uses version-2 components. Do not mix files between these installations.
Confirm Full-Text Search
From SQL Server Management Studio, connect to the affected instance and run:
SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('IsFullTextInstalled');
GO
EXECUTE sp_help_fulltext_system_components 'wordbreaker';
GO
If Full-Text Search is not installed, install or repair the feature using the media that matches the SQL Server edition and instance.

Repair the instance
- Mount or open the matching SQL Server installation media.
- Run
setup.exe. - Select Maintenance.
- Select Repair.
- Choose the affected instance.
- Complete the prerequisite checks.
- Finish the repair.
- Restart any dependent SQL Server services if Setup requests it.
- Test the full-text catalog or application that previously failed.
SQL Server repair replaces missing or corrupted files and registry entries belonging to the installation. For SQL Server Express, use installation media that includes Full-Text Search. Microsoft identifies SQL Server 2022 Express with Advanced Services as the relevant Express package.

Fix 3: Repair SharePoint search components
SharePoint Server 2010 file tables list Nl7lexicons0404.dll among the installed search files. This is most relevant when the error points into a SharePoint installation or appears while SharePoint search services start.
SharePoint 2010 is out of support. Do not replace a file with one from a different farm, cumulative-update level, architecture, or service-pack level.
- Confirm which SharePoint server and installation directory are affected.
- Back up the farm and record the installed update level.
- Use the original SharePoint installation media or matching repair source.
- Run SharePoint Setup and choose the repair or maintenance option available for that installation.
- Apply the appropriate cumulative or security update for the installed architecture and service level.
- Run the SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard if the update requires it.
- Test search crawling and queries.
If repair cannot restore the component, plan migration to a supported SharePoint release rather than relying on an isolated DLL copied from an old server.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate component, although a missing file alone does not prove that happened.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
NL7Lexicons0404.dll. - Confirm that the original path belongs to Windows, SQL Server, SharePoint, or the known application.
- Verify the file’s Microsoft signature where available.
- Restore it only when you are confident it is legitimate.
- Run a full scan afterward.
If the file was detected outside its expected product path, do not restore it automatically. Reinstall the owning package from official media instead.
Fix 5: Check architecture and damaged dependencies
A 32-bit application normally loads 32-bit components from its own environment or the appropriate Windows locations. A 64-bit application requires compatible 64-bit components. System32 and SysWOW64 naming can be confusing on 64-bit Windows, so use the requesting executable and package ownership rather than guessing from the folder name.
“Not designed to run on Windows” usually indicates corruption, a mismatched build, or the wrong architecture. Replace the complete parent package.
“Specified module could not be found” can also mean that nl7lexicons0404.dll is present but one of its dependencies is missing. Reinstall the owning Windows feature, SQL Server instance, SharePoint package, or application instead of replacing only the named file.
If investigation identifies a separate application or driver that is genuinely outdated, update it through the manufacturer or Windows Update. Do not update drivers merely because this filename appears in an error. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; the full version performs driver installation, but no driver update is the normal owner-specific fix for this linguistic DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not run:
regsvr32 nl7lexicons0404.dll
This file is linguistic data used by a word-breaker component, not the registered word-breaker DLL itself. Microsoft’s SQL Server table identifies MsWb70404.dll as the word breaker and NL7Lexicons0404.dll as a dependent file. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the DllRegisterServer entry point.
Running it may produce an error such as “the module was loaded but the entry point was not found.” That does not repair the missing language resource.
If the file is in a game or another application folder
No reliable file-specific evidence identifies a particular commercial game as the unique owner of this DLL. If the error names a game or launcher and the expected file is inside that program’s directory:
- Open the launcher.
- Open the game or application library.
- Use its Verify, Repair, or equivalent option.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall and reinstall from the developer’s official installer.
- Run the installer with administrator rights if the application requires protected folders.
The application’s own package is the authoritative source for a copy in its directory.
Prevention and final checks
Avoid registry cleaners and DLL download sites. They can introduce malware, wrong-build files, architecture mismatches, and unresolved dependencies. Use Windows language installation, matching SQL Server media, SharePoint updates, or the application’s official installer.
After repair:
- Restart Windows.
- Confirm the error no longer appears.
- Test the application or search operation that failed.
- Check whether the issue affects all user accounts.
- Review recent language changes, Windows updates, cleanup utilities, antivirus actions, and failed installations.
- Check disk health if files repeatedly disappear.
- Use System Restore only when the problem clearly began after a recent system change.
FAQ
Is nl7lexicons0404.dll a virus?
The filename is a real Microsoft language-resource name. That does not prove that every file with that name is safe. Verify its path, digital signature, and owning package.
Recommended Free Tools
Does 0404 mean a version?
No. It identifies Traditional Chinese, LCID 1028. It is not a file version.
Is this a Windows file or an SQL Server file?
It can be supplied by Windows language components and is also explicitly used by SQL Server Full-Text Search. SharePoint Server 2010 file tables also list it. The path determines which repair applies.
Can I download and copy it into System32?
Do not do that. Restore the parent package instead. Manual copying is only a controlled last-resort recovery of a verified, same-build Windows system file, not a normal fix.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. Those packages do not normally own this Traditional Chinese linguistic resource.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShould I register it with regsvr32?
Normally no. It is a dependent lexicon file, not the primary registered word breaker.
What if every repair succeeds but the popup remains?
Identify the process launching it. A stale startup entry, scheduled task, old installer, or orphaned SQL Server or SharePoint service may still request the file. Repair or remove that parent program rather than adding a loose DLL.
