microsoft.windows.firewall.commands.dll: Trace Windows Firewall Fixes

Length8 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

“The code execution cannot proceed because microsoft.windows.firewall.commands.dll was not found.”

The microsoft.windows.firewall.commands.dll error usually points to a damaged or missing Windows PowerShell NetSecurity component, not a missing game or Visual C++ runtime. Start by checking whether Windows can find the module, then repair Windows components before attempting recovery or reinstalling anything.

Which fix applies to you

  • The error appeared after an update, rollback, cleanup, debloating, or unexpected shutdown: install pending Windows updates, then run DISM and SFC.
  • The file is missing from the Windows module folder: treat it as a Windows component problem and use the repair sequence.
  • Windows Security quarantined the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
  • The error appears only in 32-bit or 64-bit PowerShell: check the matching SysWOW64 or System32 module path.
  • PowerShell can load NetSecurity, but one application still fails: that application may be loading an incorrect private copy.
  • The problem began after a recent system change: System Restore may be safer than manually replacing the DLL.
  • The message appears during a suspicious program launch: scan for malware and identify the process requesting the file.

Do not download an isolated copy from a random DLL website. It may contain malware, match the wrong Windows build or architecture, have an invalid signature, or fail to fix the damaged component that caused the error.

What this DLL is and where it belongs

Microsoft.Windows.Firewall.Commands.dll is a Microsoft Windows component associated with the Windows PowerShell NetSecurity module. That module provides firewall and IPsec management commands such as:

  • Get-NetFirewallRule
  • Set-NetFirewallRule
  • New-NetFirewallRule
  • Get-NetFirewallProfile

It is not the Windows Firewall service itself and is not a general-purpose application DLL. Microsoft documents the module and its cmdlets in the NetSecurity reference.

The expected locations are:

C:WindowsSystem32WindowsPowerShellv1.0ModulesNetSecurityMicrosoft.Windows.Firewall.Commands.dll

On 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit Windows PowerShell environment normally uses:

C:WindowsSysWOW64WindowsPowerShellv1.0ModulesNetSecurityMicrosoft.Windows.Firewall.Commands.dll

SysWOW64 is the 32-bit system environment on 64-bit Windows. Paths, versions, file sizes, and servicing details vary by Windows release and build. A sample version reported in a public file record is not a universal version for every installation.

Error messages you may see

The wording depends on whether Windows, PowerShell, or another application is producing the message:

The code execution cannot proceed because Microsoft.Windows.Firewall.Commands.dll was not found.
Microsoft.Windows.Firewall.Commands.dll is missing from your computer.
The procedure entry point ... could not be located in the dynamic link library ...
Microsoft.Windows.Firewall.Commands.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
Import-Module : The specified module ... was not loaded because no valid module file was found ...

A “procedure entry point” or “not designed to run on Windows” message often indicates a mismatched, corrupt, or wrong-architecture file rather than a simple absence.

Confirm the module and file before repairing Windows

Open PowerShell and run these commands:

Get-Module -ListAvailable NetSecurity
Get-Command -Module NetSecurity
Test-Path "$env:windirSystem32WindowsPowerShellv1.0ModulesNetSecurityMicrosoft.Windows.Firewall.Commands.dll"
Test-Path "$env:windirSysWOW64WindowsPowerShellv1.0ModulesNetSecurityMicrosoft.Windows.Firewall.Commands.dll"

Interpret the results as follows:

  • If Get-Module -ListAvailable NetSecurity returns a module, PowerShell can discover at least part of it.
  • If Get-Command -Module NetSecurity lists firewall commands, the module is available to that PowerShell environment.
  • True confirms that the file exists at the tested path, but existence alone does not prove that it is genuine or usable.
  • False means the file is absent from that location. It does not prove that the entire Windows installation is damaged.

To check the signature, right-click the file, select Properties, open Digital Signatures, select the Microsoft signature, and choose Details. A valid Microsoft Windows production signature is stronger evidence of authenticity than the filename alone. A copy found outside the expected Windows directory should not be trusted merely because it has the right name.

If the error occurs only in 32-bit Windows PowerShell, test the SysWOW64 path. If it occurs only in 64-bit PowerShell, test System32.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then restart

Windows servicing is the safest first repair because this DLL is part of Windows rather than a standalone runtime.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not immediately require it.
  6. Test the module again:
Import-Module NetSecurity
Get-NetFirewallProfile
Get-NetFirewallRule

Windows 10

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Choose Check for updates.
  5. Install the available updates and restart.

Microsoft’s current update instructions are available in Install Windows Updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the module imports and the firewall profiles or rules are listed afterward, the repair worked. If Windows Update fails, continue with DISM rather than copying a DLL from another computer.

Fix 2: Repair the Windows image with DISM and SFC

Use an elevated Command Prompt for this sequence.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:

sfc /scannow

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses. The commands and result meanings are covered in Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.

Restart Windows after both commands complete. Then run:

  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
Import-Module NetSecurity
Get-NetFirewallProfile
Get-NetFirewallRule

If DISM reports that source files could not be found, do not point it at a random DLL. Microsoft documents using a matching Windows repair source with:

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

The repair source must match the installed Windows edition and build. See Microsoft’s Windows image repair instructions.

Repeating SFC and DISM without recording what changed can make diagnosis harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it identifies, while its full version performs repairs; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate fix for this Microsoft component.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and scan Windows

Windows Security may quarantine a file after an incorrect detection, or a malicious program may have altered the module.

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event naming Microsoft.Windows.Firewall.Commands.dll.
  5. Expand the event and check the complete path, detection name, and action.

Only consider restoring the file if all of these are true:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The event identifies the expected Windows module path.
  • The file has a valid Microsoft signature.
  • The computer is otherwise clean.
  • You understand why the detection occurred.

Microsoft explains quarantine and restoration in Protection history.

If the path is outside the Windows module directory, do not restore it simply because the filename looks correct. Run Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, choose Full scan, and select Scan now. If compromise is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same screen. Microsoft’s scanning guidance is available in Virus and threat protection.

Fix 4: Check whether another program is loading the wrong copy

If this works:

Get-Module -ListAvailable NetSecurity
Import-Module NetSecurity

but one application still displays the DLL error, Windows itself may not be the failing component. The application could contain an outdated or incorrect private copy, or a startup script may be requesting a path that no longer exists.

Check the complete path shown in the error. Also check:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The application’s installation directory.
  • Startup items in Task Manager.
  • Scheduled tasks that launch at sign-in.
  • Recently removed software that may have left an autorun entry.
  • PowerShell profiles and scripts that import NetSecurity.

Do not replace a DLL in an application folder with the copy from System32. SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components, but they may not repair a third-party program that bundles or hard-codes an incorrect DLL.

Fix 5: Handle architecture and driver-related changes

A 32-bit module and a 64-bit module are not interchangeable. On 64-bit Windows, test both environments explicitly:

Test-Path "$env:windirSystem32WindowsPowerShellv1.0ModulesNetSecurityMicrosoft.Windows.Firewall.Commands.dll"
Test-Path "$env:windirSysWOW64WindowsPowerShellv1.0ModulesNetSecurityMicrosoft.Windows.Firewall.Commands.dll"

If the issue began after a network adapter, security product, or system driver change:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Network adapters.
  4. Right-click the affected adapter.
  5. Select Properties and open the Driver tab.
  6. Use Roll Back Driver if the button is available and the timing matches.
  7. Otherwise choose Update Driver and follow the Windows search prompts.
  8. Restart and test the firewall module again.

A driver change is not a proven cause of this particular DLL failure, so do not install unrelated driver packages just because the filename contains “Firewall.” Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show the detected results, while driver installation requires its full version; it is optional and does not replace Windows component repair.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent system change

Use this when the error began after an update, cleanup utility, software installation, or configuration change and a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Select Next, then Finish.
  8. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore changes system files, drivers, settings, and installed programs while preserving personal files. Microsoft explains the process in System Restore.

Why regsvr32 will not fix this DLL

Do not run:

regsvr32 Microsoft.Windows.Firewall.Commands.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer, typically ActiveX or COM components. This file is a PowerShell NetSecurity module component, not a DLL that users normally register. A “successful” registration would not repair PowerShell module discovery. Microsoft documents this behavior in its regsvr32 reference and COM self-registration guidance.

Manual copying is also unsafe. It can create an architecture or build mismatch, break signature validation, and introduce DLL search-order risks.

Verify Windows Firewall after repair

In PowerShell, run:

Import-Module NetSecurity
Get-NetFirewallProfile
Get-NetFirewallRule

You can also use the built-in command-line firewall tool:

netsh advfirewall show allprofiles

These commands should return firewall profile or rule information without a module-load error. Microsoft recommends leaving the Windows Firewall service running and managing its profiles rather than stopping the service. The supported command-line options are described in Windows Firewall tools and netsh advfirewall.

FAQ

Is this a Visual C++ or DirectX file?

No verified evidence ties this DLL to Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, a game, or a particular installer. Repair Windows and the NetSecurity module first.

Can I download the DLL separately?

There is no verified official Microsoft standalone download package for this filename. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows recovery, or installation media instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy it from another computer?

Not as a normal fix. Even a genuine file can be wrong for your Windows edition, build, architecture, language context, or servicing level.

What if SFC and DISM report no corruption?

The message may be stale. Identify the process generating it, then inspect startup entries, scheduled tasks, scripts, and application folders. If NetSecurity imports successfully, focus on the program requesting the file.

Does the Windows Firewall service need to be reinstalled?

Usually not. This DLL belongs to PowerShell firewall-management commands; it is not the Firewall service itself. Verify profiles with Get-NetFirewallProfile or netsh advfirewall show allprofiles before changing services.

When should I use Windows recovery?

Use System Restore first when a suitable restore point exists. If Windows remains damaged after updates, DISM, and SFC, use Microsoft recovery options or matching installation media rather than an isolated DLL replacement.
