Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, note:
- Which program or Windows tool shows the message?
- Does it happen when Windows starts, when opening an MMC networking tool, or when launching a particular application?
- Is the error “missing,” “not found,” “unable to load,” or “cannot register”?
- Are you using 64-bit Windows, and does the file appear in
System32orSysWOW64? - Did the problem begin after a Windows update, antivirus detection, driver change, or unexpected shutdown?
nlmgp.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows file. The file description is Network List Manager Snapin, and it supports Windows networking administration through the Microsoft Management Console, or MMC.
The safest repair is normally Windows servicing with DISM and SFC, not downloading a replacement DLL. Work through the fixes below in order.

What nlmgp.dll does and where it belongs
Network List Manager exposes network connections and their attributes to Windows and applications. Its snap-in is used for network-related policy and administration tasks.
It is not a standalone program, game runtime, Visual C++ file, DirectX component, .NET file, or printer-driver DLL. There is no identified standalone Microsoft download package for nlmgp.dll; Windows supplies it through its own servicing and installation media.

On Windows, the expected paths are:
C:WindowsSystem32nlmgp.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64nlmgp.dll
The second location applies to the 32-bit copy on 64-bit Windows. The names are counterintuitive:
System32contains native 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows.SysWOW64contains 32-bit system files on 64-bit Windows.
Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32, or a 64-bit file into SysWOW64. The version must also match the installed Windows build, servicing state, architecture, language, and signature. File size or an apparently newer version is not enough to establish compatibility.
Understand the error message
You may see wording such as:
- “The program can’t start because nlmgp.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because nlmgp.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading nlmgp.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “nlmgp.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “There was a problem starting nlmgp.dll.”
- “Cannot register nlmgp.dll.”
A missing-file message usually means Windows cannot find the file at the location expected by the component. “The specified module could not be found” is less precise. It can mean nlmgp.dll is absent, but it can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is absent or damaged. Copying nlmgp.dll alone will not fix every version of that error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix 1: Restart, update Windows, and try again
A failed or incomplete servicing operation can temporarily leave a system component unavailable.
- Save your work.
- Select Start > Power > Restart. Do not choose Shut down and immediately power the computer back on.
- After signing in, open Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update. In Windows 10, select Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart when asked.
- Repeat the check until Windows reports that no further updates are available.
- Reopen the program or Windows tool that produced the error.
If the error began immediately after an update, use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance before attempting manual DLL replacement. If Windows Update itself will not complete, continue with DISM and SFC.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired source to check and replace protected system files. Run DISM first.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected tool again.
Success means DISM completes without an error and SFC reports that it found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. If SFC says it could not repair some files, restart once and run the SFC command again. If the result is unchanged, use a valid Windows repair source with DISM or move to an in-place repair.
Running repeated scans without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its scan identifies, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and Windows DISM/SFC remains the primary repair path.
If DISM reports that source files are unavailable
Windows may be unable to obtain repair files through Windows Update. In that case, use installation media that matches your Windows edition and architecture as a repair source, following Microsoft’s documented /Source and /LimitAccess approach. Do not guess a source path or use a random Windows image.
If DISM and SFC still cannot repair the component, continue to the in-place repair section below.

Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender Protection History
Antivirus software can quarantine or remove a system file after a mistaken detection. Do not restore a DLL merely because an application requests it.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
nlmgp.dll. - Check the reported path, detection details, and action taken.
If Defender quarantined the file, verify that the path is a normal Windows directory and that the system has not been modified by an unknown program. Restore only when the detection is clearly a false positive and the file is confirmed as a Microsoft system component. Microsoft may scan the file again after restoration.
If the file was removed, repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead of downloading a replacement. Also run a full Microsoft Defender scan if the file disappeared without a recent update or repair operation.
Fix 4: Check the file path and architecture
Use File Explorer to inspect the expected locations:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select the address bar.
- Enter:
%windir%System32
- Search for
nlmgp.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, also inspect:
%windir%SysWOW64
The absence of the file in one directory does not automatically mean it should be copied from the other. Those directories hold different architectures.

If the file exists but Windows reports that it is invalid, corrupt, or not designed for Windows, do not rename it or replace it with a download. Run DISM and SFC. A dependency can also be missing, so examine the complete error wording and the Windows component that generated it.
Fix 5: Use registration repair only for registration errors
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command. Registration is relevant when MMC reports a missing class, a snap-in fails to initialize, or the message specifically says that nlmgp.dll cannot be registered.
Because this DLL exposes COM registration functions, an administrator can test the matching command after confirming that the file is present.
For the native system copy, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

On 64-bit Windows, to register the 32-bit copy, run:
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe %windir%SysWOW64nlmgp.dll
Restart Windows and open the affected MMC tool.
A successful registration message indicates that the registration call completed. If regsvr32 reports an architecture mismatch, entry-point failure, access error, or that the module could not be loaded, stop trying alternate copies. Use DISM/SFC and Windows repair instead. Registration cannot repair a damaged binary, restore missing dependencies, or make an incorrectly matched DLL safe.
Fix 6: Update Windows networking drivers only when evidence points there
A network-driver problem can cause networking features to fail, but it is not the normal source of a missing Windows nlmgp.dll. Do not install a driver merely because the filename appears in a generic error list.
Check Device Manager only if network adapters, connectivity, or network management tools also show problems:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
If the problem began after a driver update, open the adapter’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when that button is available. Otherwise, download the driver only from the computer or adapter manufacturer’s official support page.
Manually identifying stale drivers across several adapters can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show the driver issues it finds; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not required to repair nlmgp.dll.
Fix 7: Try System Restore
Use System Restore when the failure started after a recent update, driver installation, or system configuration change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the operation.
System Restore can roll back system files, registry settings, drivers, updates, and programs. It is not a replacement for a backup. If no suitable restore point exists, use an in-place repair.

Fix 8: Perform an in-place Windows repair
An in-place repair reinstalls Windows components while retaining applications and personal files when the correct option is selected.

- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and restart when requested.
If that option is unavailable or does not resolve the error, use official Windows installation media:
- Obtain installation media for the same Windows edition and compatible architecture.
- In Windows, open the media and run
setup.exe. - Continue until Windows asks what to keep.
- Select Keep personal files and apps.
- Confirm the selection and begin the repair.
Do not boot from the media for this procedure unless you intend to perform a clean installation. A clean installation can remove applications and files.
Should you download nlmgp.dll manually?
No. Random DLL download pages can provide malware, an invalid signature, the wrong architecture, or a file from a different Windows build. Manual copying can also leave Windows servicing unaware that the component was replaced and may create permission or dependency problems.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Defender Protection History, System Restore, or official Windows installation media instead. If the file is present in a third-party application directory rather than a Windows directory, identify that application and use its official repair or reinstall process. There is no reliable evidence tying nlmgp.dll to a particular game.
FAQ
Is nlmgp.dll safe?
A copy in the normal Windows system directory can be a legitimate Microsoft component. Check its path, digital signature, and Defender results. A copy in an unexpected writable folder deserves further investigation.
Should I copy it from SysWOW64 to System32?
No. These directories serve different architectures on 64-bit Windows. Repair the correct Windows component instead.
Why does “specified module could not be found” appear when the file exists?
The error can refer to a missing or damaged dependency. It does not prove that nlmgp.dll itself is absent.
Should I run regsvr32 after every DLL error?
No. Use it only for a registration-specific failure involving an otherwise valid file. It does not fix missing files or component-store corruption.
What if SFC says it could not repair the file?
Review the result, run DISM before SFC again, and use a valid repair source if Windows cannot obtain files. If corruption persists, perform an in-place Windows repair while keeping personal files and applications.
Could a game be responsible?
A program may display a generic DLL error, but no authoritative evidence identifies a particular game or installer as the usual source of nlmgp.dll. If the file should be under Windows, repair Windows rather than a game installation.
