Which fix applies to you
Use this order:
- The error appeared after an update, crash, cleanup, or antivirus alert: install Windows updates, check Protection history, then run DISM and SFC.
- The error appears while adding or using a printer: repair Windows, then remove and re-add the printer and update its official driver.
- The error names a particular application: confirm the file is being loaded from Windows rather than from that application’s folder. The named program may simply be the process that requested the Windows component.
- You manually copied the DLL or downloaded it: remove the copied replacement and repair Windows from its own component store.
- Repairs fail after a recent system change: use System Restore or, on supported Windows 11 installations, reinstall the current Windows version through Windows Update.
What is defaultprinterprovider.dll?
DefaultPrinterProvider.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with default-printer and printer-management functionality. It is normally part of the Windows operating-system image and is generally found under:
%SystemRoot%System32
Microsoft’s Windows printer guidance documents the operating system’s default-printer infrastructure.

This file is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET library, game DLL, or printer manufacturer’s driver. It is also distinct from DafPrintProvider.dll and from .mui language-resource files.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains native 64-bit system components, while 32-bit compatibility components generally use SysWOW64. That naming is counterintuitive, so do not choose a replacement based only on the folder name. A file from the wrong architecture or Windows build can produce a different loading failure.
Windows may report the problem with wording such as:

Fix 1: Install updates and restart Windows
Microsoft places updating and restarting before system-file repair because a pending or incomplete update can leave Windows components in an inconsistent state.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Retry the program or printer operation.
If the error returns, continue with DISM and SFC below. Do not repeatedly reinstall unrelated runtimes such as Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET for this Windows component.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies using that repaired store. Run them in this order.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish successfully. This can take time and may appear to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program or printer.
Microsoft documents this System File Checker repair sequence.
A successful result may say that SFC found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. If SFC reports that it could not fix some files, restart and run the sequence again. If DISM itself fails, continue to the repair-source and recovery steps below rather than copying a DLL from the internet.
When manually running DISM and SFC, it can be difficult to know which component changed or whether the repair addressed the underlying corruption. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it finds; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the specific program remains the definitive fix when the file truly belongs to that program.
If DISM cannot find repair files
DISM normally obtains repair content through Windows Update. If that source is unavailable, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:\serverc$windows /LimitAccess
The source must closely match the affected Windows installation. A mismatched source can leave the component store in an unreliable state. See Microsoft’s guidance for repairing a Windows image and fixing Windows Update corruption.
If you do not have a suitable source, use Windows recovery instead of guessing at a DLL replacement.
Fix 3: Repair the printer setup and driver
Use this fix when the error appears while installing, selecting, or using a printer.
Re-add the printer
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- In Windows 11, select Bluetooth & devices. In Windows 10, select Devices.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Choose Remove or Remove device.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Follow the setup prompts.
If Windows cannot find the printer, select the option indicating that the printer is not listed and follow the additional setup choices. Microsoft’s printer installation instructions cover wired, wireless, and network printers.
Update the driver
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on how the printer appears.
- Right-click the relevant printer or print device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test printing.
For advanced printer features, download the current driver only from the printer manufacturer’s official support page. Microsoft also recommends checking Windows Update and using the manufacturer’s current driver when necessary.
Finding the correct driver manually can mean identifying the exact model, architecture, connection type, and Windows version among many downloads. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that identifies driver issues; driver installation is done by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace Windows repair or the printer manufacturer’s definitive driver package.
A driver reinstall can repair the surrounding print subsystem, but it does not substitute for restoring a missing protected Windows file. If the DLL error remains after the printer is removed, return to DISM and SFC.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can quarantine a genuine file, but malware can also use a familiar Windows filename. Inspect the detection before restoring anything.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Open any detection that mentions
defaultprinterprovider.dll. - Check the detected path, detection name, and action taken.
- Run a scan if the detection is unclear.
Do not restore the file merely because an application says it is missing. Microsoft warns that restoring a malicious file can expose the device again. Restore or allow it only when the path and authenticity are clear, and prefer repairing Windows with DISM and SFC instead of restoring a questionable copy. Microsoft explains these decisions in its Protection History guidance.
If the file was found outside the normal Windows location, treat that as suspicious and run a full Windows Security scan.
Fix 5: Remove a manually copied DLL
If you copied defaultprinterprovider.dll into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder, undo that change if you can identify the copy.

Do not delete the genuine Windows file blindly. First check the path shown in the error or with the application’s installation details. A copied DLL beside an executable can take precedence over the correct Windows component and cause architecture, version, or dependency errors.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Never copy a 32-bit file into System32, or a 64-bit file into SysWOW64. Windows servicing is safer than selecting a folder manually.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a routine repair
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It is intended for libraries that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.
The available public export record for this file lists COM-related exports including DllGetClassObject, but does not establish a DllRegisterServer entry point. Running this command is therefore not the normal repair:
regsvr32 defaultprinterprovider.dll
It may return an entry-point error and does not restore a missing or corrupted Windows component. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains when registration applies.
Fix 7: Reinstall the current Windows version
On Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, Windows Update may offer a repair reinstall that preserves apps, files, and settings.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Keep the computer connected to power and follow the prompts.
If that option is unavailable, use another supported recovery method. Microsoft’s instructions for reinstalling the current Windows version explain the requirements.
Back up important files before major recovery operations.
Fix 8: Use System Restore
If the error began after a Windows update, printer-driver installation, cleanup operation, or other system change, System Restore may return the system to an earlier working state.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose an appropriate restore point.
- Select Next, review the affected programs, and choose Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.
You can also open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore. System Restore normally affects system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs rather than personal documents. See Microsoft’s System Restore guidance.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A standalone Microsoft redistributable named DefaultPrinterProvider is not the normal distribution method for this component. A download site may provide:
- a file from a different Windows build;
- the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture;
- a modified or malicious file;
- a copy with incompatible dependencies;
- a DLL that does not fix the damaged component store.
The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, Windows recovery, System Restore, and official printer or application installers when the file is proven to belong to that application. Do not copy a downloaded DLL into a Windows folder or place it beside an executable as a first-line fix.

Is defaultprinterprovider.dll malware?
No. The filename identifies a genuine Microsoft Windows printing component. However, malware can use a legitimate filename, so verify the path and inspect Windows Security if the file is outside the expected Windows location.
Does this file belong to my printer manufacturer?
Not normally. It is a Windows printer-provider component, separate from vendor drivers. A faulty printer driver can still trigger a failure in the surrounding print subsystem.
Should I download defaultprinterprovider.dll?
No. Repair Windows through servicing or recovery. A manually downloaded copy may be unsafe or incompatible.
Should I reinstall Visual C++ or DirectX?
Not as the normal remedy. This is associated with Windows printing infrastructure, not those runtime packages.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does an application appear in the error?
The application may be the process that attempted to load the Windows component. That does not prove the application installed or owns the DLL.
What information should I collect if the error remains?
Record the complete error text, the executable or service named, your Windows edition, version, build and architecture, the file path, and whether the problem began after an update, printer-driver installation, cleanup tool, antivirus action, or malware removal. Also check whether a second copy exists beside the named application.
What if DISM and SFC report success but printing still fails?
Restart again, inspect the full path in the error, remove and re-add the printer, and install its current official driver. If all repairs fail, use System Restore, Windows recovery, or installation media after backing up your data.
