nlsdata0416.dll may produce messages such as “The program can’t start because nlsdata0416.dll is missing from your computer” or “The code execution cannot proceed because nlsdata0416.dll was not found.” It is a Microsoft Windows component associated with natural-language and locale data, not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, graphics-driver, or game-specific file.
Which fix applies to you
- Every program is affected: Repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
- Only one older application or game fails: Repair or reinstall that application after checking Windows component health.
- The problem began after an update, cleanup tool, language change, or driver installation: Try System Restore after running the standard repair commands.
- Windows Security quarantined the file: Review Protection history, but prefer restoring the Windows component through servicing instead of copying back an isolated DLL.
- The message says “specified module could not be found”: The named file may exist while a dependency is missing or incompatible.
- The file is outside Windows component paths: Scan it and check its digital signature before trusting it.
Do not download nlsdata0416.dll from a random DLL website. An isolated file can contain malware, belong to the wrong Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or leave the underlying component-store problem untouched.

What is nlsdata0416.dll
The full Microsoft description is Microsoft Neutral Natural Language Server Data and Code. The 0416 suffix identifies the Windows locale Portuguese (Brazil), also written as pt-BR. Portuguese (Portugal) uses a different locale identifier, 0816. Microsoft documents these mappings in its available Windows language packs.

Older documented builds include both 32-bit and 64-bit variants, but a file from one Windows release is not automatically suitable for another.

The file is normally managed as part of Windows rather than installed as a standalone runtime. It may be found in Windows system or component-store paths. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system binaries and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system binaries. Those names are counterintuitive, so do not swap files between them based only on the filename or file size.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then repair Windows
This is the safest first repair when the file is missing or corrupted.
Install pending updates
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available quality, cumulative, and servicing updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Check for updates again after restarting.
If the error started immediately after an incomplete update, allow Windows Update to finish before testing the affected program again.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteRun DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows if DISM reports that repair completed or requests a restart.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which is the source Windows uses to restore protected system files. It normally obtains repair files through Windows Update.
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, install pending updates and run the command again. If it still fails, use a matching Windows installation source with the /Source and /LimitAccess options documented in Microsoft’s repairing a Windows image guidance. The source must match the Windows edition, language, and relevant build closely enough for servicing.
Running repeated commands without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting needlessly slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it identifies; its repair function is handled by the full version, and it is optional rather than required for this Windows repair.
Run SFC
After DISM completes, open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the program.
SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces missing or corrupted copies using the repaired component store. Microsoft explains the possible results in its System File Checker instructions.
The useful outcomes are:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no protected-file corruption. If one application still fails, investigate that application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still cannot repair the file, review
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.logand consider System Restore or an in-place Windows repair.
Fix 2: Check the Brazilian Portuguese language component
Because 0416 identifies Brazilian Portuguese, a damaged or incomplete language component may be involved.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Open Language & region.
- Check whether Portuguese (Brazil) is installed if your Windows setup requires it.
- Select its three-dot menu and open Language options.
- Install any missing language features Windows offers.
- Restart the computer.
- Run DISM and SFC again if the error remains.
Menu names vary between Windows 10 and Windows 11 editions. Language components are commonly delivered through Windows Update, so a successful update cycle is part of this repair rather than a separate replacement download.

Do not add a language merely to obtain a DLL for an application unless Windows or the application actually needs that locale. The important point is to repair the Windows language and component configuration, not to copy an unrelated file into a system folder.

Fix 3: Repair the affected application
If Windows works normally and only one program reports the error, the application may have a damaged installation or may be looking for an incorrect private copy. The error message alone does not prove that nlsdata0416.dll is the only cause.
For a traditional desktop application
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its menu and choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the application again.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Install it again from the developer’s official installer or original installation media.
For older software, right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator. Use compatibility settings only if the application has separate compatibility problems; they do not replace Windows component repair.
For a game launcher
Open the game’s launcher and look for Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files. Let the launcher replace damaged application files, then restart the launcher and test the game.
Do not copy a random DLL into the game directory. A Windows system component from another build can create a version mismatch, and a file that appears to fix one message may cause a different startup failure.
If the application’s complete error identifies a separate runtime file, follow that runtime’s official repair instructions. Reinstalling Visual C++ is relevant only when the error names a Visual C++ runtime DLL, not merely because this filename appears.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove a file after detecting suspicious activity, or it can quarantine a legitimate file during a false positive.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Expand the relevant detection.
- Record the detection name and original file path.
- Run a full scan before restoring anything.
Do not restore or allow the file simply because an application says it is missing. Restore it only when you have confirmed that it came from a trusted Microsoft Windows installation and the detection is demonstrably a false positive. Microsoft explains these decisions in its Protection History guidance.
The safer approach is usually to repair Windows with DISM and SFC, then run Windows Update. If the file repeatedly returns to quarantine, run a full Windows Security scan and investigate the detection instead of repeatedly allowing it.
A copy found in a temporary folder, an unknown download directory, or an unrelated application folder deserves additional scanning and signature inspection. File presence alone does not prove that the copy is genuine.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began after a Windows update, driver installation, cleanup utility, language change, or other system modification.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point and select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the process.
You can also open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore. System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs while leaving personal files untouched. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore documentation.

Fix 6: Update a related driver only when evidence points there
nlsdata0416.dll is not a graphics or device driver file. A driver update is relevant only if the application began failing after a device change, Windows update, or driver installation, or if Device Manager reports a problem.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the suspected device.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Read the status on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver or obtain the driver from the device manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not remove working drivers merely because a DLL error appears. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what it finds; the driver installation feature is handled by the full version, and a driver update is not required to repair a damaged Windows locale component.
Should you use regsvr32
Usually, no.
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide a COM registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. nlsdata0416.dll is a natural-language data component and is not normally repaired by registration.
Running commands such as these will not recreate a missing Windows component:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →regsvr32 nlsdata0416.dll
It can also produce a misleading error because the file is not designed for that registration method. Microsoft’s DLL and OCX registration guidance explains when registration applies.
If none of the repairs work
If SFC still cannot repair the component:
- Run DISM again and record the exact result.
- Check
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. - Confirm that Windows Update is working.
- Use a matching Windows repair source if DISM cannot locate source files.
- Consider an in-place Windows repair installation.
- Check drive health if corruption returns after repair.
If every application begins reporting missing or damaged Windows files, suspect broader system corruption, disk problems, malware, or a failed servicing operation rather than an application-specific defect.
When requesting further help, provide the exact error text, affected application, Windows version and build, full file path, whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit, and any recent update, language change, cleanup operation, or Windows Security detection.
FAQ
Is nlsdata0416.dll malware?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. A copy’s path, digital signature, hash, and relationship to your Windows build matter. A suspicious location or failed signature should be scanned rather than trusted.
Is it part of Visual C++ Redistributable?
No verified evidence identifies it as a Visual C++ file. Reinstall Visual C++ only when the error names a separate Visual C++ runtime component.
Does the file belong to a particular game?
No specific mainstream game or application is established as uniquely requiring this file. An older program may expose the error while Windows is missing or unable to load the underlying component.
Can I download the DLL separately?
Avoid isolated DLL downloads. Use Windows Update, the installed language components, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or a trusted application repair instead.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?
The message can indicate a missing or incompatible dependency, not necessarily a missing copy of nlsdata0416.dll. Repair Windows and the affected application rather than replacing the named file manually.
