nlslexicons0018.dll is a genuine Microsoft linguistic resource used by Windows natural-language components and SQL Server Full-Text Search. If nlslexicons0018.dll is missing or will not load, repair the Windows or SQL Server component that owns it instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
Microsoft identifies the file as Microsoft Neutral Natural Language Server Data and Code. It supports linguistic processing, including language-aware search and text handling.

The 0018 suffix identifies the Romanian language resource associated with LCID 1048 in Microsoft’s full-text language mapping. That does not mean Windows must be configured in Romanian for the file to matter.

Historical Windows file inventories include the DLL in the Windows system component set, while Microsoft also lists it among the linguistic binaries used by SQL Server Full-Text Search. Older records show both 32-bit and 64-bit variants, depending on the Windows or product architecture. A version or file size copied from another computer is not automatically compatible with yours.

The failing owner is usually indicated by the path or the program named in the error:
- A path under
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64points toward Windows components. - A path under a SQL Server installation directory points toward SQL Server.
- A path beside a particular application executable requires investigation before assuming that application owns the file.
- A message shown during a game or app launch does not prove that the game shipped this Microsoft DLL.
Causes and symptoms
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first repair |
|---|---|---|
| Error appears during Windows startup or a Windows search operation | Damaged or missing Windows component | Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| Error appears during SQL Server setup, patching, or Full-Text Search | Damaged SQL Server linguistic binaries | Repair the matching SQL Server instance |
| “The specified module could not be found” even though the file exists | A missing dependency, wrong path, or architecture mismatch | Identify the executable and repair its owning product |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” | Wrong build, damaged file, or incompatible architecture | Do not copy another DLL; repair Windows or SQL Server |
| Problem began after antivirus activity | Quarantine or removal | Check Protection History and verify the original file |
| Problem began after an update or disk problem | Incomplete servicing or filesystem corruption | Complete updates, then run DISM and SFC |
| Error occurs only in one third-party application | Application installation or dependency problem | Repair or reinstall that application from its official installer |
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because nlslexicons0018.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting nlslexicons0018.dll.”
- “Error loading nlslexicons0018.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because nlslexicons0018.dll was not found.”
- “nlslexicons0018.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are Windows loader messages. They describe the loading failure, not necessarily the product that originally installed the file.

Record whether it appears after signing in, while searching, opening Windows settings, or starting another built-in operation. A path in the error message can help confirm whether the file belongs to Windows.
You can also check Event Viewer:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs → Application.
- Look for an error at the same time as the DLL message.
- Record the application name and executable path.
If it appears during SQL Server work
Treat the issue as a SQL Server problem when it occurs during:
- SQL Server installation or patching
- Full-Text Search configuration
- Starting or repairing a SQL Server instance
- A database operation that specifically invokes full-text services
Do not replace one language DLL inside the SQL Server directory. SQL Server linguistic binaries are installed and serviced as a component set.
If it appears when one application starts
Right-click the application shortcut, select Properties, and inspect the Target field. The executable name and installation folder identify the product that needs repair.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the message says only “module could not be found,” the named DLL may already exist while one of its dependencies is missing. Repairing the application or owning Windows component is safer than placing another copy beside the executable.
Fix 1: Complete Windows Update
A pending or interrupted update can leave protected system components in an inconsistent state.
- Press Windows + I.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately request a restart.
- Try the operation that produced the error again.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than searching for an individual DLL.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. System File Checker then uses that repaired store to replace damaged protected files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- After DISM completes successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the affected program or Windows operation.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and test again. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, the problem may belong to SQL Server, an application dependency, or a missing dependency rather than the protected Windows copy.
If DISM cannot find the repair files, Windows may need a matching installation source. Microsoft documents using a suitable Windows installation image with the /Source and /LimitAccess options. The source must match the installed Windows edition and architecture.
Repeating SFC without addressing a damaged component store usually does not solve this condition. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds when you want help identifying repair issues, but its full-version repair is optional and Microsoft’s DISM/SFC process remains the direct Windows method.
For Microsoft’s supported command sequence and recovery guidance, use the System File Checker instructions and the DISM repair documentation.

Fix 3: Repair SQL Server
Use this path when the error occurs during SQL Server installation, updating, setup, or Full-Text Search.
You need matching SQL Server installation media for the installed release and edition.
- Insert or mount the SQL Server installation media.
- Open the media in File Explorer.
- Run
setup.exe. - In SQL Server Installation Center, select Maintenance.
- Choose Repair.
- Select the affected SQL Server instance.
- Follow the wizard through the repair.
- Restart Windows if setup requests it.
- Retry the SQL Server operation that failed.
For SQL Server Express, Microsoft documents using offline installation media. The command-line form is:
setup.exe /q /ACTION=Repair /INSTANCENAME=<instancename>
Replace <instancename> with the actual instance name. If you are unsure of the instance name, open SQL Server Configuration Manager and inspect the SQL Server services before running a command-line repair.
If repair fails, use fresh matching media. Damaged installation files or a missing Windows Installer cache can prevent setup from restoring the linguistic component. Review the SQL Server setup logs and use Microsoft’s SQL Server repair guidance.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine a damaged, modified, or suspicious copy.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Find the detection related to
nlslexicons0018.dll. - Note the original path, detection name, and action taken.
- Do not restore the file merely because its filename matches the error.
- Verify that the original location belongs to Windows or the expected SQL Server installation.
- Run a Microsoft Defender scan before restoring anything.
Restore a quarantined file only when its original path and digital signature are consistent with the owning Microsoft installation. If the file was found in a temporary folder, download directory, or unknown application folder, leave it quarantined and investigate the source.
Microsoft explains the available actions in its Protection History guidance.

Fix 5: Check architecture and the failing process
A 32-bit process and a 64-bit process do not always use the same system location.
On 64-bit Windows:
C:WindowsSystem32generally contains 64-bit system components.C:WindowsSysWOW64generally contains 32-bit system components.
Those names are confusing, so use the process architecture rather than guessing from the folder name.
To check a running process:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform if available.
- Check whether the affected process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
On some Windows versions, a 32-bit process is marked with “32-bit” after its name. If the error occurs before the process appears, check the application’s documentation or installation folder instead.
Do not copy a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit application folder, or take a file from another Windows release because its version number looks similar. Repairing the owning product installs the architecture and build it expects.

Fix 6: Consider drivers only if the timing points there
nlslexicons0018.dll is not a device-driver file. Do not use Device Manager as the primary repair for this DLL.
If the error began immediately after a graphics, storage, chipset, or other device-driver change, you can still check that driver:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category involved.
- Right-click the device and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver date and provider.
- Use Update Driver or reinstall the driver from the device manufacturer’s official source.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not uninstall unrelated devices simply because a DLL error appeared. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers when manually checking many hardware categories is inconvenient, but its full-version installation is optional and a driver update is not the definitive fix for a damaged Windows or SQL Server linguistic component.
Why downloading the DLL is unsafe
Do not download nlslexicons0018.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. That approach can introduce malware, install the wrong architecture, mix builds from different Windows releases, or hide the real problem.
It can also create DLL search-order conflicts if an unrelated copy is placed beside an executable. “The specified module could not be found” may continue because the missing item is a dependency, not the named file.
The safe sources are:
- Windows Update and Windows repair tools for Windows-owned files
- Matching Windows installation media when DISM needs a repair source
- Matching SQL Server installation media for SQL Server-owned files
- The affected application’s official installer when the application clearly owns the failing path
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 registers compatible COM and ActiveX DLLs that expose the required registration entry point. It is not a general-purpose DLL repair command.
nlslexicons0018.dll is a linguistic data and code component, not an ordinary COM plug-in that should be registered manually. Running commands such as these is therefore not a supported repair:
regsvr32 nlslexicons0018.dll
If the command reports that an entry point is missing, that is expected for a component that is not designed for manual registration. Repair Windows or SQL Server instead. Microsoft describes the command’s actual purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.

Frequently asked questions
Is nlslexicons0018.dll a legitimate Windows file?
Yes. It is a Microsoft linguistic resource associated with Windows-era natural-language components and SQL Server Full-Text Search.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does 0018 mean the file is for Romanian?
It identifies the Romanian language resource in Microsoft’s full-text language mapping. The file can still be installed as part of a broader Windows or SQL Server component set.
Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?
Historical variants exist in both architectures. Use the architecture of the failing process and repair the owning product rather than selecting a DLL by size or filename alone.
Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Manual copying can create a version or architecture mismatch and may not replace a missing dependency.
Is this a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET file?
No. It is a Microsoft linguistic component. Reinstalling those runtimes is not the normal repair path.

What if the file exists but the error still says “module not found”?
The named file may have a missing dependency, an invalid path, or an architecture mismatch. Identify the executable and repair Windows, SQL Server, or the specific application that owns it.
When should I reinstall the application?
Reinstall the application only when its executable and installation path are clearly identified in the error or logs. If the failing path belongs to Windows or SQL Server, repair that product instead.
