nlslexicons0027.dll: Windows and SQL Server Repair Checklist

Length9 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

Before changing anything, record three details:

  • Which program shows the error
  • Whether it appears at Windows sign-in, while launching an app, or during SQL Server activity
  • Whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The full error text and the file path are especially important. A message naming nlslexicons0027.dll does not prove that the file itself is the only problem. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency is missing.

What nlslexicons0027.dll is

nlslexicons0027.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows Natural Language Services component. Windows inventories identify it as Microsoft Neutral Natural Language Server Data and Code, associated with the Microsoft-Windows-NaturalLanguage6 component.

A normal Windows copy is generally found in the relevant Windows system directory. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application may use a matching copy through C:WindowsSysWOW64, while 64-bit processes normally use C:WindowsSystem32. Do not decide the correct location from the filename alone.

The file is also included among SQL Server Full-Text Search linguistic binaries. SQL Server may therefore have a copy inside its instance MSSQLBinn directory. A SQL Server copy and a Windows system copy are not automatically interchangeable. Microsoft documents the SQL Server binary locations in its Full-Text Search binary upgrade guidance.

Historical Windows inventories list 32-bit and 64-bit builds with the same approximate file size, but those records are not a current download catalog. Do not replace a current Windows file with an old copy simply because its name matches.

First, identify the owner of the error

Check the message and executable

Write down the program named in the error. Then check its installation folder:

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Details.
  3. If the program is running, right-click it and choose Open file location.
  4. In File Explorer, right-click the program executable and select Properties.
  5. Check the Details tab for the product name and publisher.

You can also search Event Viewer:

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Type eventvwr.msc and press Enter.
  3. Open Windows Logs → Application.
  4. Look for an error at the same time the program failed.
  5. Record the Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and exception details.

If the error points to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64, treat it as a Windows servicing problem first. If it points to an application’s folder, repair that application first. If it points to an SQL Server MSSQLBinn directory, use the SQL Server repair path below.

Fix 1: Restart, update Windows, and retry

A pending update or interrupted servicing operation can leave protected Windows components unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Save your work and restart Windows.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Choose Check for updates.
  5. Install all available updates.
  6. Restart again if Windows requests it.
  7. Launch the affected program.

If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not download the DLL separately.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC

This is the primary repair for a missing or corrupted copy in a Windows system directory. Run DISM first because SFC uses the component store as a repair source.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Keep the administrator Command Prompt open.
  3. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the affected program again.

SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupt files. That is a successful result, but restart before testing. Microsoft documents this workflow in its guide to using System File Checker.

If DISM completes with an error, or SFC says it could not repair some files, do not repeatedly run the same commands without checking the result. Microsoft’s Windows image repair guidance documents using a matching Windows repair source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a verified repair source that matches the installed Windows edition, build, language, and architecture. An unrelated Windows image can introduce a different mismatch.

The manual part of DISM and SFC is keeping track of which repair source matches the installed build and interpreting logs when the repair is incomplete. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying problems and show what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in repair remains the first step.

Check the SFC details

To extract the useful SFC entries:

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
  2. Run:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log > "%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
  1. Open sfcdetails.txt from the desktop.
  2. Search for NlsLexicons0027.dll.
  3. Record whether SFC reports a hash mismatch, a missing source, or a successful repair.

A real SFC failure can involve both the live file and the component-store copy. If the log says the source in the store is also corrupted, move to matching installation media or an in-place Windows repair rather than copying a DLL from another computer.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may remove or quarantine a file after an update, cleanup operation, or false detection. Do not disable antivirus globally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Choose Protection history.
  5. Review entries from the time the error began.
  6. Expand any entry that names nlslexicons0027.dll.
  7. Check the original file path and the detection details.

Only consider restoring the item when the original path is a legitimate Windows or trusted application location and the detection is clearly resolved. Microsoft warns that allowing a detected file can expose the device if the detection is genuine. See Microsoft’s Protection history guidance.

Update Defender signatures, run a full scan, and test again. If the file is repeatedly quarantined, submit it for Microsoft analysis instead of adding broad exclusions or turning protection off. Microsoft also provides malware detection troubleshooting.

Fix 4: Repair the application that calls the file

If only one program fails and the error path is inside that program’s folder, repair the program rather than replacing a Windows copy.

Look for one of these options:

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Find the affected program.
  3. Select the three-dot menu.
  4. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. Test the program.
  7. If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings.

For desktop installers, open the program’s original official installer and choose Repair or Modify. For a game launcher, use its Verify or Repair files command. Download the installer only from the application developer or the organization that supplied the program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If repair is unavailable:

  1. Uninstall the application from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Download the current installer from the developer’s official source.
  4. Install the program again.
  5. Launch it before restoring custom plugins or modifications.

This is the definitive fix when the named path belongs to that application. Do not copy a Windows nlslexicons0027.dll into the application directory unless the application vendor’s documented repair procedure specifically requires it.

Fix 5: Use the SQL Server repair path

If the failure occurs during Full-Text Search, indexing, or an SQL Server service operation, check whether the path belongs to an SQL Server instance.

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Select Microsoft SQL Server.
  4. Choose Uninstall/Change.
  5. In SQL Server Setup, select Repair.
  6. Choose the affected instance.
  7. Follow the setup wizard.
  8. Restart the SQL Server services and test the Full-Text Search operation.

Do not copy a random Windows DLL into MSSQLBinn. SQL Server’s linguistic binaries must match the SQL Server instance and its servicing level. If the issue began after a SQL Server update, apply the appropriate update or repair package for that instance.

Fix 6: Check architecture and version mismatches

A 32-bit program and a 64-bit program use different DLL search paths. A file with the right name can still be unusable if it has the wrong architecture, is truncated, or belongs to a different Windows build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the application architecture from its documentation or installer. In Task Manager, a 32-bit process may appear with a 32-bit label on 64-bit Windows.

Do not:

  • Replace a 64-bit system file with a 32-bit file
  • Copy a Windows 7 or Windows 8 file into a current Windows installation
  • Copy a file from another computer without matching its Windows build and architecture
  • Place a replacement in a random application folder

“Not designed to run on Windows” commonly indicates corruption, wrong architecture, or an incompatible build. It is not proof that installing a runtime package will fix the problem.

Fix 7: Do not register this DLL with regsvr32

regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.

nlslexicons0027.dll is a Windows Natural Language Services data/code component, not an ordinary COM-style application control. Registering it is generally not appropriate and can produce another error without repairing the underlying component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not run:

regsvr32 nlslexicons0027.dll

unless the software vendor specifically instructs you to do so for a confirmed registration-capable build. Microsoft explains the intended behavior of regsvr32.

Fix 8: Check Windows Features only when the application requires them

Do not randomly enable Windows Features to replace this file. Windows Features does not provide a standalone download for nlslexicons0027.dll.

If the affected program documents a required optional Windows component:

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Type optionalfeatures and press Enter.
  3. Enable only the feature named in the application’s documentation.
  4. Select OK.
  5. Restart Windows if requested.
  6. Test the application again.

For SQL Server, use SQL Server Setup rather than Windows Features. For a Windows system-path error, DISM and SFC are the relevant repair tools.

Fix 9: Use System Restore or an in-place repair

If the problem began immediately after a driver update, Windows update, cleanup utility, or security-product action, System Restore may return the system to a working state.

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select a restore point from before the failure.
  5. Choose Next → Finish.
  6. Allow Windows to restart.
  7. Test the affected program.

System Restore does not normally remove personal files, but it can remove recently installed software, drivers, or updates. Microsoft documents the process in its System Restore guidance.

If DISM and SFC both fail because the component store is damaged, use matching Windows installation media for an in-place repair. Back up important files first. A reset or clean installation is a later recovery option when broader filesystem or operating-system damage is present.

If the failure follows disk errors, back up data and check drive health before attempting repeated repairs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you download nlslexicons0027.dll?

No. Do not use a random DLL download site as the first repair.

A downloaded file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different Windows build, or leave the damaged component store and application installation unrepaired. Microsoft does not appear to provide this file as a standalone redistributable.

Use the matching source instead:

  • Windows system path: Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, or in-place repair
  • Application path: the developer’s official installer or repair function
  • SQL Server path: SQL Server Setup repair and matching SQL Server updates
  • Quarantined file: verified restoration through Windows Security only after checking the original path and detection

Updating drivers when the error follows hardware or an update

Drivers are not the normal source of this Windows language component, but a damaged servicing operation or recent device update can expose broader system corruption.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category connected with the failure.
  4. Right-click the device and select Properties.
  5. Open the Driver tab.
  6. Review the provider, date, and version.
  7. Use Update Driver or Roll Back Driver only when the timing matches the problem.
  8. Restart Windows and test again.

Download drivers from the computer or device manufacturer when possible. The difficult part is matching the exact model and avoiding an unrelated package. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show the required updates, while driver installation through the full version is optional; it is not a substitute for repairing the application or Windows component that owns this DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FAQ

Is nlslexicons0027.dll legitimate?

Yes. It is identified as a Microsoft Windows Natural Language Services component. A copy in an unexpected writable folder should still be scanned and investigated because filename alone does not prove origin.

Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

There is no evidence that this file belongs to those redistributables. Installing Visual C++ 2015 is not the standard repair for this Windows component.

Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found?

The named file may be missing, inaccessible, corrupted, or incompatible. A dependency required by the file may also be missing.

Can I copy it from another PC?

Not safely as a general fix. The source must match the Windows edition, build, architecture, language, and servicing state, and manual copying can create a second mismatch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I send to support?

Provide the Windows edition and build, 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, complete error text, affected program, exact file path, recent update or security event, and relevant SFC or DISM log entries.
