Some file inventories identify aitool.dll as version 6.00.8169, with a size of 114,688 bytes and product metadata for VBAddInToolbar6. Treat those details as corroborated file metadata, not as proof that a current Microsoft standalone download exists.
Microsoft’s VB6 support policy distinguishes the 32-bit VB6 runtime from the VB6 development environment. The IDE and its add-ins run as 32-bit software, including on 64-bit Windows through WOW64.

The filename alone does not identify the application that produced the error. Start with the program named in the error dialog or the executable shown in Task Manager.

- Search for Visual Basic 6, Visual Studio 6, or the legacy program that failed.
- If the program is not listed there, open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Look for the same products in the classic installer list.
If a copy of the file exists, right-click it, choose Properties, and inspect Location. A plausible VB6 copy should normally be below a VB6 installation’s VB98Wizards directory. Be cautious with copies found in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- Temporary folders
- Downloads folders
- DLL download sites directories
- Folders belonging to unrelated games or utilities
A message saying that the specified module could not be found does not always mean aitool.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load one of its dependencies. The parent installer is still the best way to restore both the DLL and the components it needs.
Fix 1: Repair the Visual Basic 6 or parent application installation
This is the most reliable fix because aitool.dll is an application component, not a protected Windows file.
Repair Visual Basic 6
- Locate the licensed Visual Basic 6 setup program or original installation media.
- Run the setup program.
- Choose Repair if the installer offers that option.
- Keep the VB6 IDE selected.
- Ensure Wizards, Add-ins, and related development tools are selected.
- Let setup complete.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the VB6 IDE and test the add-in or project that previously failed.
The installer should restore AITOOL.DLL beneath the VB6 VB98Wizards directory and recreate the relevant registration. Do not replace that process by copying a DLL from another computer.

Apply the appropriate official VB6 service-pack updates afterward. Microsoft’s VB6 SP6 cumulative update and VB6 SP6 security rollup are updates, not guaranteed standalone replacements for AITOOL.DLL.
Repair another application
If a business program or older tool is raising the error, repair that application instead:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application and test it.
For classic desktop software:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs → Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
If repair fails, reinstall the application using its publisher-provided installer. A third-party program may have bundled or registered the VB6 add-in, so reinstalling that parent program can be the definitive fix even when Visual Basic 6 is not visibly installed.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine an old component, especially if the file was modified or the parent application is no longer maintained.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review detections around the time the error began.
- Expand any entry associated with the VB6 installation or the affected application.
- Do not restore the file until you have verified its original path and source.
Microsoft explains that restoring a quarantined item can cause Defender to detect it again. Restore only a file from a trusted, legitimate installation, and allow it only after you are confident the detection is a false positive. If the file was removed from an untrusted folder, leave it quarantined and reinstall the parent program instead.
After restoring a verified file, run the parent installer’s repair function. That gives you a cleaner registration and dependency state than manually moving the quarantined file.
Fix 3: Register a known-good 32-bit copy
AITOOL.DLL appears to be a COM add-in DLL, and historical VB6 installation scripts register it. Registration is relevant during a VB6 repair, but manually registering a random downloaded copy is not a safe first step.
On 64-bit Windows, use the 32-bit registration tool from an elevated Command Prompt:
Recommended Free Tools
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32 "C:PathToVB98WizardsAITOOL.DLL"
Replace the path with the actual location of the verified VB6 installation.
To run it:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run the command.
- Restart the affected program.
On 32-bit Windows, the registration tool is normally located at:

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
%windir%System32regsvr32 "C:PathToVB98WizardsAITOOL.DLL"
A successful registration message indicates that Windows accepted the DLL’s registration entry points. If Windows reports that DllRegisterServer was not found, registration is not applicable to that copy or the file is damaged. If it reports that a dependent module could not be found, return to the parent installer and repair the complete VB6 installation.
Microsoft’s Regsvr32 guidance explains why DLL architecture and registration entry points matter. Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64; those folders are not substitutes for the VB6 installation directory.

Fix 4: Repair broader Windows component corruption
SFC and DISM are useful when Windows itself is damaged, but they normally will not recreate aitool.dll. This file belongs to the VB6 application, not the protected Windows component store.
Use them when other Windows features are also malfunctioning:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the VB6 or parent application repair.
The expected success condition is that DISM and SFC complete without reporting an unrepaired problem. If they complete successfully but aitool.dll is still missing, that is expected: reinstall the parent application.
If repeatedly hunting through repair logs and rerunning SFC or DISM is becoming guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the broader Windows issues involved; its free scan shows what it found, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application that owns aitool.dll remains the definitive fix.
Fix 5: Check drivers only for wider application failures
A graphics or chipset driver is not a targeted source for aitool.dll, and installing Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET has no established connection to restoring this VB6 add-in. Still, if the same application has unrelated crashes or device errors, check Windows drivers separately.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, System devices, and any category related to the failing program.
- Right-click a device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider and status.
- Use Update driver only with a driver from the device or PC manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If the driver installation itself is the manual bottleneck, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan to show which drivers are stale; installing updates requires the full version. It is optional and will not replace the VB6 repair that aitool.dll normally needs.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is reasonable if the error appeared immediately after software removal, an update, cleanup, or a confirmed deletion.

- Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if offered.
- Pick a restore point from before the failure began.

- Review the changes.
- Start the restore and let Windows restart.
System Restore does not replace a proper reinstall, and it may not affect files outside its restore scope. Microsoft’s System Restore instructions explain the process.
What not to do
Do not download aitool.dll from a DLL website
Random DLL sites can provide malware, a damaged file, the wrong architecture, or a version that does not match the installer’s registration and dependencies. Even a clean copy may leave the actual parent installation broken.
Use the original licensed VB6 media or the legitimate installer for the application that raised the error. Microsoft’s official VB6 update packages are appropriate for updating an existing installation, not as proof of a standalone aitool.dll download.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
aitool.dll is a 32-bit VB6 add-in expected under VB98Wizards. Copying it into a Windows system directory can create path conflicts and makes it harder to determine which program is loading which copy.
Do not treat it as the VB6 runtime
aitool.dll is the Add-In Toolbar component. It is not the same as msvbvm60.dll, and installing or replacing the VB6 runtime does not specifically restore this wizard.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not disable antivirus blindly
If Defender removed the file, verify its provenance first. A filename is not proof of authenticity. Check the location, file properties, available signature information, and the parent installer before restoring anything.

Is aitool.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
It is a 32-bit Win32 component. On 64-bit Windows, VB6 and its add-ins run through WOW64. Use the 32-bit SysWOW64regsvr32.exe when registration is genuinely needed.
Should I install msvbvm60.dll?
Not for this specific error. The VB6 runtime and the VB6 IDE’s Add-In Toolbar are different components. Repair the parent installation instead.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Can SFC restore aitool.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while aitool.dll belongs to an application installation.
Why does regsvr32 say the module is missing?
The named DLL may be absent, the command may point to the wrong path, or a dependency of the DLL may be missing. Repair the VB6 or parent application before trying registration again.
How do I know whether the file is malware?
The filename alone cannot answer that. Verify that it came from a legitimate installer, inspect its path and signature where available, review Windows Security history, and scan the system. Remove untrusted copies and reinstall from trusted media.
What if reinstalling Visual Basic 6 does not help?
Identify the exact executable raising the error, then repair that application instead. Also review antivirus history, installer logs, file permissions, and whether the problem affects only one Windows user profile.
