Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, record:
- Which program or game displays the error
- When it appears: during Windows startup, application launch, installation, or a SQL Server operation
- The exact path shown in the message, if any
- Whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the problem began after an update, uninstall, antivirus action, cleanup, or failed installation

The correct repair depends on whether the error names a Windows component location, an application folder, or a SQL Server instance directory.
Do not download the DLL from a random DLL website. An arbitrary copy can contain malware, target the wrong architecture, belong to a different Windows generation, or leave the actual missing dependency and broken installation untouched.

What nlslexicons004a.dll does
The 004A portion identifies the Telugu language resource associated with language ID 1098. Microsoft documents the file among natural-language and full-text-search components, including legacy SQL Server full-text binaries.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Microsoft’s Windows Vista file information lists Nlslexicons004a.dll in both x86 and x64 editions. That does not mean the same file belongs on every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation, or that an old file can be copied safely into a newer system directory.

The same filename can exist in separate product locations because Windows and SQL Server may each maintain compatible language or full-text resources. An application can also carry a private copy in its own installation directory.
Microsoft documents nlslexicons004a.dll in SQL Server’s legacy full-text component set and places those files in an instance’s Binn directory when maintaining compatibility. See Microsoft’s SQL Server full-text index version guidance.
1. Read the exact path in the error
The path is the most useful clue.
If the path is inside the application or game folder
Examples include a folder under:
C:Program Files
C:Program Files (x86)
C:Games
The application is probably the owner. Repair or reinstall that exact program rather than copying a Windows DLL into its directory.
If the path is under a SQL Server instance
A path containing an SQL Server installation and MSSQLBinn points to the SQL Server full-text installation. Do not overwrite the file with a Windows copy. Repair or update the matching SQL Server instance and follow Microsoft’s full-text compatibility procedure.
If the message names a Windows system location
A Windows-owned copy should be restored through Windows servicing. Do not manually place a downloaded file in System32 or SysWOW64.
If no path is shown
Use the failing program’s event or installation logs.
- Press Windows key, type Event Viewer, and open it.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time the program failed.
- Open the entry and record the faulting application path and module information.
You can also right-click the application shortcut, select Properties, and inspect the Target field. This identifies the executable, but not always the DLL search path being used.
2. Repair the affected application first
This is the fastest fix when the error appears only with one program.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Repair normally preserves application data. If it fails, return to the same page and choose Reset only if you understand that the application may lose local settings or cached data.
Microsoft also provides app repair and reinstall guidance.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair or Reset.
Some desktop programs do not expose these controls. In that case:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Select Repair or Change, if offered.
- Follow the installer prompts.
If there is no repair option, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer or the official game launcher. Do not preserve a damaged installation folder by copying individual DLLs back into it.
For games and packaged applications
Open the official launcher and find the installed game or application. Look for a command named Verify files, Verify integrity, Repair, or Scan and repair. Let the launcher replace missing or damaged files, then restart Windows and test the program.
If the launcher reports that files are correct but the error remains, uninstall and reinstall the affected game or application. A stale private DLL copy or a missing dependency can survive a basic verification pass.
3. Repair SQL Server if the path points to Binn
If the error names an SQL Server instance directory, treat it as an SQL Server installation problem.
- Open Settings and select Apps, or open Control Panel and select Programs and Features.
- Find the installed Microsoft SQL Server entry.
- Select Modify, Change, or Repair.
- Allow the SQL Server setup program to load.
- Choose the instance associated with the failing service.
- Select the repair or upgrade path appropriate to that installation.
- Restart the SQL Server service when setup completes.
Do not copy a Windows version of nlslexicons004a.dll into SQL Server’s Binn directory. SQL Server full-text search can depend on a matching group of legacy word-breaker and lexicon binaries, not one isolated file.
If the error started after an SQL Server upgrade or rollback, compare the instance version and full-text configuration with Microsoft’s full-text index version upgrade procedure.
4. Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate component after an update or failed installation.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand entries from the time the error began.
- Inspect the detected file path and threat details.
Restore a file only when the path belongs to the expected Windows, SQL Server, or application installation and the file is digitally signed by Microsoft or the product’s legitimate publisher. If the detection concerns a suspicious folder or unsigned replacement, do not restore it. Remove the threat and repair the affected installation instead.

5. Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use this step when:
- The error refers to a Windows location
- Several applications report missing system files
- Windows Update or language features recently changed
- An update failed or rolled back
- Disk cleanup or manual deletion affected protected files
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Press Windows key.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run these commands separately:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies from that store. Microsoft documents the process in its guides for repairing a Windows image and using System File Checker.
Restart Windows after both commands complete. Then run Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates, install applicable updates, restart again, and test the program.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of repeating SFC and DISM while guessing what changed. Its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and repairing the owning application remains the definitive fix when the DLL belongs to that program.

If DISM says that source files could not be found, do not download nlslexicons004a.dll separately. Microsoft explains how to provide a matching Windows installation source in its DISM and Windows Update troubleshooting guidance. The source must correspond closely to the installed Windows edition and build.
6. Confirm architecture and file authenticity
A 32-bit application needs a compatible 32-bit component. A 64-bit process needs a compatible 64-bit component. Windows folder names can be confusing:
System32is normally used for 64-bit system components on 64-bit Windows.SysWOW64contains 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows.
Do not use those names as a reason to copy a file manually. The owning installer and Windows servicing determine the correct location.
To inspect an existing copy:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is Microsoft when the file is supposed to be Windows-owned.
- Open the Details tab and record the file version, product name, and original filename.
Microsoft’s Vista file table lists version 6.0.6000.16386 and a size of 3,419,136 bytes for the documented x86 and x64 copies. Other catalogued copies include 6.1 and 6.2-era versions, but an old version number is not proof that the file is correct for a current Windows build. Check the actual signature, path, architecture, and owning product.

7. Check for a missing dependency
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean nlslexicons004a.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found that file but failed to load one of its dependencies.
If the file exists and has a valid signature:
- Confirm that the application and DLL have matching architecture.
- Repair the application or SQL Server installation.
- Review the application’s installer log and Event Viewer.
- Check whether the error occurs under another Windows user profile.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
- Test the disk if other files are also disappearing or becoming corrupted.
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET solely because this filename appears in the message. Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable documentation describes those packages as C and C++ runtime libraries, not as the source of this lexicon file. Install a runtime only when the application’s own log separately identifies that runtime as missing.
8. Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs designed to register COM components through an exported DllRegisterServer entry point. A natural-language lexicon or data component is not normally installed that way.
Running commands such as these is therefore not a general fix:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →regsvr32 nlslexicons004a.dll
regsvr32 /u nlslexicons004a.dll
They can produce another error without repairing the loader problem. Microsoft describes the command’s behavior in its regsvr32 documentation.
9. Update drivers only when evidence points there
There is no established driver relationship for nlslexicons004a.dll. Update drivers only if Device Manager, Event Viewer, or the affected application separately reports a device or driver failure.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category connected with the separate error.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which of many installed drivers are stale instead of making you hunt versions manually. Its free scan identifies reported issues, while installation is handled by the full version; it is not required for this DLL and does not replace repairing the application that owns it.
10. Use System Restore or Windows repair only after tracing the change
System Restore is reasonable when the error began immediately after a driver, update, language-feature change, or software installation and a restore point exists.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Press Windows key and type Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
- Review affected programs.
- Start the restore and let Windows restart.
If Windows component repair, application repair, and SQL Server repair all fail, use a Windows repair installation or in-place upgrade from official Microsoft installation media that matches the installed edition. Back up important data first. This is preferable to manually replacing protected files.
FAQ
Is nlslexicons004a.dll malware?
The filename is a legitimate Microsoft component name, but malware can use a copied or renamed legitimate filename. Verify its path and digital signature. A copy in an unexpected temporary folder, user profile folder, or suspicious application directory requires investigation rather than automatic restoration.
Does Visual C++ install this file?
No evidence identifies it as a Visual C++ Redistributable file. Do not install or reinstall Visual C++ unless the failing application separately reports a Visual C++ runtime dependency.
Should I download the DLL separately?
No. Use Windows servicing, the official application installer, the SQL Server repair process, or the game launcher’s Verify/Repair command. Random DLL downloads can provide the wrong architecture, version, or a malicious replacement.
Is it a Windows file or an SQL Server file?
It can be associated with Windows natural-language components or SQL Server legacy full-text components. The exact path in the error determines which repair applies.
Why does regsvr32 fail?
The file is not normally a COM registration target. A registration error does not prove that the DLL is missing or damaged.
What should I collect if the error remains?
Record the complete error text, executable path, DLL path, process architecture, file signature and version, Event Viewer entry, antivirus history, and the results of DISM and SFC. That information identifies whether the caller is using a damaged Windows component, a private application copy, an SQL Server binary, or a missing dependency.
