nmsql.dll Missing: Safe Visual Studio Repair Steps for Windows

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

nmsql.dll is a legacy Microsoft Visual Studio file, and nmsql.dll errors usually mean that an old development tool or application has lost part of its original installation. If Windows says the file is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the program that needs it rather than downloading a random DLL.

The file is described as Non-Native Model for SQL Debugger and is associated with Microsoft Visual Studio. It is not known to be a normal Windows system component, and there is no good reason to expect it in a fresh C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 installation.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

First, identify the program that needs nmsql.dll

Do not begin by copying a replacement file into a Windows folder. The correct repair depends on which executable displays the error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Write down:

  • The exact application name in the error dialog
  • Whether the error appears when launching Visual Studio, an old database tool, an internal business program, or another application
  • Whether the problem began after uninstalling software, restoring an old project, reinstalling an application, cleaning the disk, or an antivirus detection
  • The folder containing the program’s main .exe file

If the message appears only when one application starts, nmsql.dll probably belongs beside that application or inside its original Visual Studio installation. If several unrelated programs fail, investigate Windows corruption or security software, but do not assume that the DLL is a Windows component.

Typical messages include:

  • “This application failed to start because nmsql.dll was not found.”
  • “The program can’t start because nmsql.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “Error loading nmsql.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The file nmsql.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “Cannot find nmsql.dll.”

“The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency used by nmsql.dll is missing. The named file is not always the entire problem.

Fix 1: Repair Visual Studio or the owning application

Time needed: 10–30 minutes, plus any download time.

This is the safest first fix when the error comes from an installed Visual Studio environment or an old Microsoft development tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair Visual Studio through Visual Studio Installer

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Visual Studio Installer.
  3. Open Visual Studio Installer.
  4. Find the installed Visual Studio instance associated with the failing program.
  5. Select More.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Confirm the repair and allow the installer to reacquire damaged files.
  8. Restart Windows after the repair completes.
  9. Launch the application that reported the error.

Microsoft documents repair as a way to reacquire corrupted installation files and reinstall existing assemblies. It can reset Visual Studio settings, profiles, and some local customizations. See Microsoft’s Visual Studio repair instructions.

A successful repair normally means that the original application opens without the nmsql.dll message. If the same message returns, note whether the repair completed successfully and continue with the next section.

Repair or reinstall a separate application

If the error belongs to an old database program, internal tool, or application that was built around Visual Studio, use that product’s installer instead:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
  4. Find the application named in the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu in Windows 11, or select the application in Windows 10.
  6. Choose Modify, Repair, or Change if available.
  7. If no repair option exists, uninstall the application.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Reinstall it from the original installer media or a legitimate Microsoft-provided source.
  10. Start the program again.

For a legacy product, reinstall the same edition and any service pack required by that product. Installing a current Visual Studio release is not guaranteed to restore files from an older Visual Studio environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the software is no longer supported, preserve its original installer, license information, project files, and configuration before removing it. Test the reinstallation on a non-production computer first if the program is used for business work.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine and the application folder

Time needed: 5–15 minutes.

Security software may remove a legacy DLL after a scan or definition update. Disk cleanup, manual file deletion, or an incomplete software deployment can cause the same symptom.

Review quarantine history

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving nmsql.dll or the application that reported the error.
  5. Check the original file path shown in the event.
  6. Do not restore the file solely because its name matches the error.
  7. Restore it only when the path belongs to the expected application and the original installation or Microsoft-signed media confirms its provenance.
  8. Update or reinstall the owning application afterward.
  9. Run another security scan.

If a security product still detects the file, leave it quarantined until the vendor has reviewed the detection. Do not disable protection to obtain a DLL from an unknown source.

Check whether the program was copied incompletely

An old application may require several private DLLs and support files. Copying only its main executable to another computer often produces a missing-file error.

  • Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Select Open File Location.
  5. Confirm whether the application directory contains its expected supporting files.
  6. Compare the directory with a working installation, if one exists.
  7. If files are missing, reinstall or redeploy the complete application package.

Do not move nmsql.dll into both system folders as a test. An application may search its own installation directory first, and a system-folder copy can conceal the real deployment problem.

Fix 3: Restore the original 32-bit environment

Time needed: 15–45 minutes.

Available historical file information identifies nmsql.dll as a 32-bit file associated with an old Visual Studio toolchain. A 32-bit application can require a 32-bit DLL even when it runs on 64-bit Windows.

The locations have different purposes:

  • C:WindowsSystem32 contains native 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows.
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64 contains 32-bit Windows system files on 64-bit Windows.
  • The application’s own installation directory may contain private 32-bit files that should not be copied into either system folder.

The names are confusing, but neither system folder is a safe destination for an unverified application DLL.

Check the failing executable

  1. Open Task Manager.
  2. Select Details.
  3. Right-click a column heading.
  4. Select Select columns.
  5. Enable Platform, if available.
  6. Start the affected application and observe its process.
  7. If Windows identifies it as 32-bit, it may need the 32-bit Visual Studio files that were installed with the original product.

On versions of Windows that do not show the platform column, use the application’s documentation or the installer’s product information. The practical fix remains the same: restore the file from the same application and compatible installation rather than substituting a file with the same name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that a modern Visual C++ Redistributable will provide nmsql.dll. Microsoft describes current redistributables as runtime libraries for applications built with recent Visual Studio toolchains, not as a repository for every historical Visual Studio file. You can review Microsoft’s Visual Studio downloads for current supported products, but do not install a current package expecting it to recreate this legacy debugger component.

Fix 4: Check the original installer and deployment source

Time needed: 15–60 minutes.

If the application is used by several people, compare the failing computer with a known-good computer running the same software.

  1. Confirm that both computers use the same application edition.
  2. Compare the application installation paths.
  3. Check whether the working computer has nmsql.dll beside the relevant executable or inside a Visual Studio directory.
  4. Confirm that the failing installation was deployed from the same installer.
  5. Re-run the original installer using Repair, Modify, or Change.
  6. If necessary, uninstall and reinstall from the trusted installation source.
  7. Start the application and check whether the error has disappeared.

For internally developed software, ask the developer or vendor to rebuild the deployment package with all required dependencies. A missing dependency may produce the same loader message even when nmsql.dll itself is present.

If you have only an old installation disc, use that media rather than downloading an isolated DLL. Microsoft continues to publish information about historical Visual Studio and Visual Basic service packs, but a service pack should not be assumed to contain this particular file unless the original product documentation confirms it.

Fix 5: Use DISM and SFC only for Windows component corruption

Time needed: 15–30 minutes.

nmsql.dll is not identified as a protected Windows system file, so SFC and DISM are not the most likely direct fix. Use them when Windows shows broader corruption, system applications fail, updates fail, or SFC reports related protected-component problems.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected application again.

Microsoft’s supported guidance is available in its System File Checker instructions.

If DISM or SFC reports that it repaired Windows files, test the application. If both commands complete without finding a problem and only one old application still fails, return to that application’s repair or reinstallation process.

If repeatedly running SFC and DISM is becoming guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing what it identifies, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the specific Visual Studio-era application remains the definitive fix for an app-private DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Check drivers only when the failure is broader

Time needed: 15–30 minutes.

A display, storage, or database driver is not the usual source of a missing nmsql.dll message. Driver work is appropriate only when the application also crashes, Windows reports device errors, or Event Viewer identifies a related hardware or driver fault.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, and System devices.
  4. Look for a yellow warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected device.
  6. Select Properties.
  7. Open the General tab and note any device status code.
  8. Open the Driver tab.
  9. Select Update Driver.
  10. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  11. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
  12. Test the original application.

Do not replace unrelated drivers simply because nmsql.dll is missing. If the application works on other computers and only one machine has device errors, resolve those errors separately.

When manually hunting through many hardware vendors and driver versions is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the application that owns nmsql.dll.

Fix 7: Check Windows Features only when the application requires them

Time needed: 5–15 minutes.

Windows Features does not normally install nmsql.dll, but an old application may require a separate Windows component such as .NET Framework or legacy compatibility support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Select Turn Windows features on or off.
  4. Review the features named in the application’s documentation.
  5. Enable only a feature required by that application.
  6. Select OK.
  7. Restart Windows if prompted.
  8. Test the program again.

Do not enable random legacy features as a substitute for restoring the Visual Studio installation. If the application’s installer requests a particular feature, let the installer identify it.

Why regsvr32 usually does not fix nmsql.dll

regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer; it does not recreate a missing file, repair its dependencies, or make an incompatible 32-bit file work in a 64-bit process.

Avoid running commands such as:

regsvr32 nmsql.dll

unless the application vendor specifically says that this DLL is self-registering and provides the correct command and path. A “missing entry point” or registration error is evidence that registration is not the appropriate repair.

Avoid standalone DLL download sites

Downloading nmsql.dll from a random DLL site can provide:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Malware or a tampered file
  • The wrong historical build
  • The wrong architecture
  • A file with a misleading name
  • A replacement that still lacks its dependencies
  • A file that does not match the application’s digital signature

It can also leave the underlying installation damaged. Use the original application installer, Visual Studio Installer, trusted Microsoft media, or the software vendor’s supported deployment package instead.

If you find an existing copy, inspect it before using it:

  1. Right-click the file.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open Details.
  4. Check the product and publisher fields.
  5. Open Digital Signatures, if present.
  6. Confirm that the location belongs to the expected application.
  7. Compare the file with the original installation source.

A copy in a temporary directory, user-writable folder, or unrelated modern application directory deserves investigation rather than blind replacement.

When to use System Restore

What caused the nmsql.dll error

The most likely causes are:

Cause What to do
Visual Studio or the original application was damaged Use the product’s repair option or reinstall it
Antivirus quarantined the file Review quarantine and restore only a verified file
The program was copied without dependencies Redeploy the complete application
A 32-bit legacy program lost its matching files Restore the original 32-bit environment
A dependency is missing Repair the application and inspect loader or Event Viewer details
Windows components are corrupted Run DISM followed by SFC
A suspicious copy exists elsewhere Check its path, signature, and provenance

The error may also name a similar file, such as nmsqldb.dll or sqlnm.dll. Read the filename carefully before changing anything.

FAQ

Is nmsql.dll part of Windows?

No reliable evidence identifies it as a normal Windows component. It is associated with an old Microsoft Visual Studio environment and should generally be repaired through the owning application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is nmsql.dll part of SQL Server?

The name references an SQL debugger description, but that does not prove that current SQL Server releases install this exact file. Identify the failing executable before changing SQL Server components.

Is nmsql.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?

Available historical file information identifies it as 32-bit. A 32-bit application may need it even on 64-bit Windows.

Should I copy nmsql.dll into System32?

No. The application may require the file in its own directory, and a random system-folder copy can be the wrong version or architecture.

Will the latest Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?

Usually not. Current redistributables are not a general archive of historical Visual Studio debugger files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I run regsvr32?

Usually not. Registration is relevant only when the DLL is documented as self-registering and exports the required registration function.

What if the original software is obsolete?

Preserve its installer and data, identify the exact executable that needs the file, and contact the software vendor or internal developer. If necessary, run the legacy environment on a controlled supported computer rather than downloading an unverified DLL.

What if every repair fails?

Check Event Viewer under Windows Logs and Application, inspect the application’s installation directory, confirm the executable’s architecture, and obtain the original installer or vendor support package. The goal is to restore the complete legacy environment, not merely silence one missing-file message.
