smierrsy.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows resource file used by the legacy WMI SNMP provider and its MIB compiler. If smierrsy.dll is missing, Windows or an SNMP-related application usually needs the Windows capability restored, not a downloaded copy of the DLL.
What smierrsy.dll does
The file’s description is WMI SNMP MIB Compiler Syntax Error Messages. It belongs to Microsoft Windows and supports the SNMP compiler infrastructure, particularly the smi2smir command.

SNMP, or Simple Network Management Protocol, allows management software to monitor network devices. A MIB, or Management Information Base, describes the objects and values that an SNMP system can read. The smi2smir compiler parses MIB files, checks their syntax and references, and reports compiler diagnostics. Microsoft documents this function in its smi2smir reference and SNMP compiler error documentation.

smierrsy.dll identification
| Item | Verified information |
|---|---|
| File | smierrsy.dll |
| Description | WMI SNMP MIB Compiler Syntax Error Messages |
| Publisher | Microsoft Corporation |
| Component | Windows SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider infrastructure |
| Modern installation | Optional Windows capabilities |
| 32-bit or 64-bit | Architecture-specific Windows copies have existed |
| Normal location | Depends on Windows release and servicing layout |
| Standalone redistributable | No current Microsoft standalone DLL download is established |
Microsoft’s historical Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information lists architecture-specific copies, including x86 and x64 packages. That historical entry should not be treated as the current Windows 10 or Windows 11 version, size, or universal path.
Do not assume that every copy belongs directly in C:WindowsSystem32. Windows may store component files under servicing directories or feature-specific locations, depending on the release.
First, identify the exact failure
Before changing files, record the complete error and the program that displays it. These messages do not all mean the same thing.
“smierrsy.dll was not found”
This normally means the calling program could not locate the file through Windows’ DLL search process. The SNMP or WMI SNMP capability may not be installed, or an application may be requesting a component it should have installed privately.
“The specified module could not be found”
The named file may exist while one of its dependencies is missing or incompatible. Windows reports many dependency-loading failures using this wording. Copying another smierrsy.dll into the application folder may therefore change nothing.
“This application was unable to start” or “not designed to run on Windows”
This commonly points to corruption, a wrong architecture, or a build mismatch. It can also be specific to the calling application. The full path, error code, Windows edition, and affected program are needed to identify the exact cause.

- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Run:
Get-WindowsCapability -Online -Name "SNMP.Client~~~~0.0.1.0"
Get-WindowsCapability -Online -Name "WMI-SNMP-Provider.Client~~~~0.0.1.0"
Each capability should show:
State : Installed
If either reports NotPresent, install it before attempting manual file repairs.
Fix 1: Install the SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider capabilities
This is the most likely fix when an SNMP monitoring tool, MIB compiler, management script, or network-administration program reports the error on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
The WMI SNMP Provider depends on the SNMP client, so install both capabilities.

Install through Settings
On current Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Optional features.
- Click View features or Add a feature.
- Search for Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
- Select it and click Next.
- Click Install.
- Return to the optional-features screen.
- Add WMI SNMP Provider in the same way.
- Restart Windows.
On some older Windows 10 releases, use:
Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Optional features
Recommended Free Tools
Then choose Add a feature, install Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), and install WMI SNMP Provider.
After restarting, open the affected application again. If it starts normally or the MIB compilation proceeds, the missing Windows capability was the cause.
Install through elevated PowerShell
If the Settings interface cannot find the features, open PowerShell as administrator and run these commands separately:
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name "SNMP.Client~~~~0.0.1.0"
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name "WMI-SNMP-Provider.Client~~~~0.0.1.0"
Restart Windows, then confirm the result:
Get-WindowsCapability -Online -Name "SNMP.Client~~~~0.0.1.0"
Get-WindowsCapability -Online -Name "WMI-SNMP-Provider.Client~~~~0.0.1.0"
Both should report State : Installed.
If the first command succeeds but the second fails, do not assume SNMP alone is sufficient. The WMI SNMP Provider is the separate capability that supplies the WMI integration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOlder instructions may tell you to run:
dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:SNMP /featurename:WMISnmpProvider
On modern Windows versions, those old feature names can produce error 0x800f080c because the names are no longer recognized. Use Optional Features or Add-WindowsCapability instead. Microsoft explains this transition in its SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider installation guidance.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
If both capabilities are installed but the file is missing, corrupted, or rejected as an invalid Windows file, repair the component store and protected system files.
First install pending Windows updates and restart:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
Then run DISM before SFC.
Run DISM
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to reach completion.
- Leave the window open until DISM reports whether the repair succeeded.
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which is the source Windows uses to restore system components. Microsoft documents the process in its Windows image repair guidance.
Run System File Checker
After DISM finishes:
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the SNMP application or command.
A message stating that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them is a good result. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. Persistent failure points to a servicing-source, disk, or broader Windows problem.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
A real Microsoft component can be quarantined or deleted, particularly after a security-product detection or an aggressive cleanup operation. Do not restore every file named smierrsy.dll automatically.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an item involving
smierrsy.dll. - Check the file path and detection details.
- Restore it only if it is clearly the Windows component and the detection is a confirmed false positive from your security provider.
- Run Scan options > Full scan.
A file with the same name in an unexpected application folder, a temporary directory, or a user-writable folder deserves extra suspicion. If Windows cannot restore the quarantined item, reinstall the SNMP capabilities and run DISM/SFC instead of downloading a replacement.
Fix 4: Repair the application that reports the error
If the error appears only when one program starts, while Windows’ capability state is correct, the application may have an incorrect private dependency or an incompatible copy in its own directory.
Start with the application’s repair option:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Click its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application.
If no repair option exists:
- Download the installer again from the application’s official vendor.
- Uninstall the program from Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current version.
- Test the program before copying any DLL files into its directory.
For a game, use the launcher’s file-verification or repair command rather than replacing Windows files. No reliable evidence establishes smierrsy.dll as a normal dependency of a particular modern game, Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX package, or .NET runtime.
If Windows tools and SNMP utilities work but one application still fails, contact that application’s vendor with the full error, file path, Windows build, and capability state. The application may be using the wrong DLL search path. Microsoft describes the relevant behavior in its documentation for DLL search order.
Fix 5: Update related device software or drivers
A driver is not the usual source of smierrsy.dll, but a network-monitoring suite, SNMP adapter, virtual network device, or hardware-management program may fail because its supporting software is outdated.
Do not use Device Manager to replace the Windows DLL. Use it only to check the related hardware or driver:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters and any category associated with the affected hardware.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider and version.
- Use Update Driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a managed or specialized device, obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer rather than a random driver archive. Outbyte Driver Updater can show outdated drivers in a scan, while driver installation through the full version is optional; verify every proposed driver against the hardware manufacturer and Windows compatibility before installing it.
If the error began immediately after a driver update, return to Device Manager > device Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver, if that button is available. This is a device-specific step and does not replace installing the SNMP and WMI capabilities.
Fix 6: Resolve Features on Demand installation failures
The optional features must be obtained from Windows Update or an approved Features on Demand source. Installation may fail on a managed computer when Windows Update is blocked, WSUS policy does not provide the payload, or the repair source does not match the installed Windows build and edition.
If PowerShell returns an error:
- Run the capability checks again to confirm the current state.
- Restart Windows.
- Check Settings > Windows Update for connection or policy errors.
- Retry the installation while connected to the organization’s approved network.
- If the computer is managed, ask the administrator to provide a valid Features on Demand or repair source.
- Do not combine packages from a different Windows edition, language, or release.
For an offline repair, an administrator can use a matching Windows source with DISM:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual matching source. The source must correspond closely to the installed Windows version and edition. An arbitrary ISO or copied system folder can introduce a servicing mismatch. Microsoft covers repair-source requirements in its repair-a-Windows-image documentation.

Fix 7: Check architecture and loading context
Windows has 32-bit and 64-bit processes, and applications may have private DLL directories. A 32-bit application can request a 32-bit dependency even on 64-bit Windows. Conversely, a 64-bit program cannot use a 32-bit DLL as a substitute.
Check the affected program’s architecture from its documentation or vendor support information. Also record the path shown in the error. Do not infer the correct replacement location from the filename alone.

A historical Microsoft manifest confirms that architecture-specific copies existed for earlier Windows releases, but it does not provide a safe current replacement for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Use recovery options for a persistent Windows failure
If the capabilities will not install, DISM cannot repair the image, and several Windows components are failing, treat the issue as a broader Windows servicing problem.
Try System Restore
If restore points exist:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace a missing feature payload in every case, so retry the capability installation afterward.
Consider a repair installation
A repair installation that keeps personal files and applications may be appropriate when Windows itself remains usable but protected components are persistently damaged. Back up important files first, use installation media that matches the installed edition and architecture, and choose the option to keep files and applications when offered.
Use Windows recovery only after backup
If Windows has broader startup, servicing, or corruption problems, use Settings > System > Recovery and review the available recovery choices. A reset can remove applications and may remove personal data depending on the selected option, so confirm the backup and reset choices carefully.
What not to do
Do not download smierrsy.dll from a DLL archive
Random DLL download sites sites can provide malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a modified file. Even a clean-looking replacement may not match the component store or the application’s dependencies. It often fails because the missing item is the SNMP capability or another dependency, not the isolated file.
Use Windows Optional Features, PowerShell capabilities, DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or the affected application’s official installer.

Do not run regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. There is no evidence that smierrsy.dll is a self-registering component.
Running commands such as these will not restore the Windows feature:
regsvr32 smierrsy.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32smierrsy.dll
An entry-point error is expected if the DLL does not expose the required registration routine. Microsoft documents the command’s scope in its regsvr32 reference.
FAQ
Is smierrsy.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft Windows and the WMI SNMP MIB compiler. The specific copy should still be checked by path, digital signature, and antivirus status because malware can use a legitimate filename.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIs it installed by default on Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Not necessarily. SNMP and the WMI SNMP Provider are optional Features on Demand on modern Windows. Check both capability states before assuming the file is missing from a standard installation.
Is it a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX, or .NET file?
No reliable Microsoft evidence connects it to those runtimes. Installing them automatically is not an appropriate first response.
Where should the file be stored?
There is no single universal path for every Windows version. Do not treat a historical System32, wbem, or DLL-cache path as a current rule. Restore the owning Windows capability instead of choosing a folder manually.
Why does the file exist but the program still fail?
Another dependency may be missing, the application may be using a private search path, or the file may be the wrong architecture or build. Repair the application and Windows components rather than copying another DLL.
Recommended Free Tools
Does installing SNMP always recreate the file?
Not necessarily on every Windows build. Install both the SNMP client and WMI SNMP Provider, then verify the capability states and test the calling program.
Should a new monitoring system use SNMP?
SNMP is a deprecated Windows feature. If designing a new deployment, consider newer management approaches rather than treating the legacy Windows SNMP stack as a preferred general-purpose platform.
What information should I collect if the error remains?
Record the complete error text, the program that displays it, the path mentioned in the message, the output of both Get-WindowsCapability commands, the Windows build from winver, the system architecture, and any antivirus quarantine entry. This information distinguishes a missing optional feature from corruption, an application packaging error, or an impostor file.
