Need a D&D check but don’t have a die nearby? RealDice.org offers a way to trigger a physical d20 roll remotely and watch it through a camera feed. It is different from a phone app that generates a digital result, but its current image-reading accuracy and the fairness of its rolls have not been independently established.
What RealDice.org does
RealDice.org presents itself as a physical dice roller with live video. At the time the page was accessed on October 8, 2026, it showed a ROLL button, a “Reading Model v3” panel with result and confidence feedback, selectable results from 1 to 20, “Unclear” and “Retry Capture” controls, and live chat. These are visible elements of the page, not proof that every feature works reliably for every visitor. Visit RealDice.org.
The current page also describes the service as offering “Real Randomness.” That is the site’s own tagline; it should not be read as independent statistical validation.
How the physical roll reportedly works
In a report published August 29, 2025, Tyler August of Hackaday described a physical twenty-sided die spinning inside a plastic bubble. According to the report, the spinner’s button had been replaced with a relay that the server activates when a visitor presses the website’s roll control. This is reported implementation detail, not an independent inspection of the hardware. Read the Hackaday report.

How to use it with a remote game
- Open RealDice.org and check that the live page and camera feed are available.
- Press ROLL to trigger the roll. The 2025 report describes the server activating the spinner after a visitor clicks the site control.
- Check the camera view to see where the physical d20 lands. In the current interface, the reading panel offers a suggested result and controls for reporting a number from 1 to 20, marking it “Unclear,” or retrying the capture.
- Share the visible roll with the group using whatever voice or chat service your game already uses. RealDice.org also displayed a live chat interface when accessed, but the available information does not establish how consistently it operates.
What the result reader can—and cannot—tell you
Hackaday’s August 2025 account said users then had to read the camera feed themselves, while the creator collected labeled results to help develop image recognition. The current page’s “Reading Model v3” panel indicates that the interface has since changed, but the available sources do not establish its accuracy, how often it captures a result successfully, or whether a roll can fail to produce a clear reading. If the image and model disagree, the page’s feedback controls let a visitor report a result or mark it unclear; the sources do not specify a formal dispute-resolution rule for a game.
When a remote physical die is useful
The clearest fit is a remote tabletop role-playing session where players want to see a physical d20 roll rather than use a phone-generated result. The camera view makes the physical action visible to people who are not in the room. That can be useful for casual play, but it does not by itself establish fairness or make the service suitable for gambling, audited competitions, or other situations requiring independently verified randomness.

RealDice.org versus a digital roller or your own d20
| Option | What you get | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| RealDice.org | A reported physical d20 roll with a camera-based view; the live page also shows model-reading and result-feedback controls. | Depends on the website, camera feed, and result interpretation. Accuracy, fairness, and consistent availability are not established. |
| Dice app | A digital roll generated and displayed by the app. | It is not a visible roll of a physical die. The sources do not establish that either approach is statistically fairer. |
| Physical 20-sided die | A die you can roll offline at the table without the website or its camera. | For remote players, someone must provide a view of the roll if others are to see it. This is the practical difference of an ordinary die, not a claim made by RealDice.org. |
If you would rather roll offline
A standard 20-sided die is the straightforward alternative: it works without the site, a camera, or an internet connection. Hackaday reported that the site’s spinner was purchased from Amazon, but did not identify its model; that setup is not a grounded product recommendation.
