You can scan and share discoveries, adopt creatures as companions, and, in the newer Xeno Arena feature announced by Hello Games in April 2026, train and breed them for battles.
Why the fauna looks familiar—and then gets weird
No Man’s Sky builds its universe through procedural generation, creating planets and their life from combinations rather than presenting a fixed catalogue of real-world species. Hello Games describes exploration as a chance to catalogue unique life and share discoveries across a vast galaxy. The result can look instantly recognizable at a glance—a dog-like body, a crab-like outline, a towering dinosaur shape—then diverge into unfamiliar proportions, colors, or features.
The community-maintained No Man’s Sky Resources fauna guide groups creatures into visual archetypes such as dog-like, dinosaur-like, crab-like, spider-like, and beetle-like forms. Those categories are useful shorthand, not official biological taxonomy. The guide also notes that creatures based on the same model or genus can look very different, so a shared silhouette does not mean two discoveries are identical.
What changed as the universe grew
Hello Games’ Origins update expanded the range of planetary forms and behaviors, adding creatures that burrow, roll, and fly, improving flocking, and introducing rare synthetic creatures on some uncharted planets. Regular updates continue to add planets, biomes, creatures, and stories, making fauna part of a changing exploration game rather than a static bestiary.

That history matters if you are comparing a current planet with an old screenshot or set of coordinates. Origins included a creature-generation reset: previous creature discoveries were moved to an “Extinct” section in the Discoveries page. A past record or image can document what a player found before the reset without guaranteeing that the same creature appears at that location now.
How to find and share unusual creatures
The basic loop is simple: spot a creature, scan it, catalogue or name it, then upload the discovery. The game’s official overview describes cataloguing unique life and sharing discoveries on a galaxy map; the community fauna guide explains that scans can be uploaded and renamed through the Discoveries menu.

- Explore a planet. Look around different areas and biomes rather than assuming one landing spot shows all of its fauna.
- Scan what you encounter. Use the in-game scanning tools to record creatures you can observe.
- Review the entry in Discoveries. Catalogue or rename the find, then upload it through the menu when available.
- Share the discovery. Other players may be able to see the uploaded record or visit the location, but the scale of the shared universe means a particular creature is not guaranteed to be easy for them to encounter.
There is no reliable route established here to a currently findable specimen called a “unicorn dog,” “hissing crab,” or “space dino.” Treat those phrases as playful descriptions, not search-ready species names or promises of a specific coordinate.
When a strange find becomes a companion
Fauna are more than scenery. In its Companions update, Hello Games introduced creature adoption, egg incubation, egg trading, and the Egg Sequencer, which can remix genetic material. Players can adopt up to six creatures and rename them. Companions can also help with practical tasks such as scouting resources, marking hazards, and locating buildings.

That gives an odd-looking animal a second appeal: it can be a discovery worth cataloguing and a partner that helps during planetary exploration. Eggs and genetic remixing add another way to develop or exchange unusual creatures beyond simply finding them in the wild.

Hello Games’ April 2026 Xeno Arena announcement describes a further gameplay role for fauna: collecting, training, breeding, genetic modification, and battles in holo-arenas found in Space Stations and the Space Anomaly. The studio says elemental affinities are connected to a creature’s species and home world, and that rarer biomes can yield rarer creatures. It also describes sharing creature knowledge and locations as the basis for an economy around discovery.

Hello Games summed up the design question this way: “We started with this thought that you can discover them and name them… but what if all that variety had a gameplay purpose?” The announcement presents Xeno Arena as a system that turns discovery into a route toward training and competition, not just a collection of memorable shapes. Check the live game for current availability and seasonal details; the announcement alone does not establish those particulars.
