npqtplugin4.dll is an old Apple QuickTime browser plug-in file, not a Windows system DLL. If npqtplugin4.dll is missing, the safest fix is usually to identify the program requesting it and repair or reinstall that program from its official installer.
The 60-second answer
- Note the application name shown in the error.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and look for that application and QuickTime.
- Use the application’s Repair, Verify files, or similar option if available.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall and reinstall the parent application from its official installer.
- Do not download a loose copy of
npqtplugin4.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Check Windows Security in case antivirus software quarantined the file.
QuickTime for Windows is obsolete and unsupported. Apple’s final Windows release was QuickTime 7.7.9, and Apple states that it is no longer supported. Current browsers generally do not need browser plug-ins for video, so reinstalling QuickTime is appropriate only when a specific legacy application genuinely requires it.

What npqtplugin4.dll is
The NP name historically refers to a browser plug-in module. npqtplugin4.dll was part of the old QuickTime plug-in family used to display multimedia content inside web pages and applications that embedded browser-based QuickTime content.
Historical QuickTime installations included related files such as:

The file is associated with Apple QuickTime for Windows. Historical file metadata also associates it with QuickTime Plug-in 6.5 and Apple Computer, Inc. That metadata identifies the file’s legacy role, but it does not prove that every copy came from exactly the same QuickTime release.
This is a legacy 32-bit component. A modern 64-bit replacement is not expected. On 64-bit Windows, the affected application may still be a 32-bit program and may need the 32-bit QuickTime files in the application’s own directory.
The file may have been installed in a QuickTime plug-in folder or alongside the application that uses it. A historical location is similar to:
C:Program Files (x86)QuickTimePlugins
The exact location varies by QuickTime version, Windows architecture, and the parent application. It is not necessarily supposed to be in C:WindowsSystem32.
Why the error suddenly appeared
The message usually means that an older application still expects QuickTime but its files are no longer complete. Common causes include:
- The application or QuickTime installation was partially removed.
- An upgrade or cleanup utility deleted an old plug-in.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- The program was copied to another computer without all of its supporting files.
- The application was installed with the wrong architecture or an incomplete package.
- The executable is damaged or another QuickTime dependency is missing.
- A browser shortcut, startup entry, scheduled task, or abandoned application still launches old QuickTime content.
The program named in the dialog matters more than the DLL name. The error could come from a legacy game, educational title, media application, utility, or browser-based content package.
Fix 1: Identify and repair the application
This is the most likely successful fix because it restores the complete set of files rather than supplying only one DLL.

Read the title bar and message carefully. Write down:
- The program name
- The executable name, if shown
- The full file path, if shown
- Whether the error appears at startup or only when opening particular content
If the dialog identifies an executable, search for that executable in File Explorer. Right-click it, select Properties, and check the General and Details tabs.
Do not assume that an unusual copy of the file is safe. A file named npqtplugin4.dll in a temporary folder, a downloads folder, or an unrelated system directory deserves additional scrutiny.
Check installed applications
On Windows 11:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for the application named in the error.
- Search for QuickTime.
- Select the three dots beside the application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair if Windows provides that button.
On Windows 10:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
Some older desktop applications do not expose a Windows Repair button. Open the application’s Start menu folder or installation directory and look for a launcher, maintenance utility, or setup program with options such as Repair, Verify, or Restore.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Restart Windows after the repair, then launch the same program again.
Reinstall the parent application
If repair is unavailable or does not work:
- Back up the application’s saved data if the program stores it outside your documents.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download or run the installer supplied by the application’s developer.
- Install the application using its normal 32-bit package if it is a legacy 32-bit program.
- Restart again and test it.
If the application specifically documents QuickTime as a requirement, use the historical Apple QuickTime package only in a controlled environment and only with the understanding that QuickTime for Windows is unsupported. Reinstalling the complete parent application remains preferable to copying a single plug-in file.
You should consider this step successful when the application starts without the missing-file message and its affected multimedia feature works. If the same message returns, note which executable launches it and continue with the checks below.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine a legitimate old file, especially when the file belongs to unsupported software. Do not disable antivirus protection merely to force the application to start.

- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any item that names the affected application or
npqtplugin4.dll.
Check the detected file’s path, publisher information, and the application that installed it. A file in the application’s original installation directory is more consistent with the expected use than an identically named file in an unrelated directory, but path alone is not proof of safety.
If the application and its installer are trusted and the detection is understood, Microsoft Defender may provide a Restore action for a quarantined item. Review the detection carefully before selecting it. Reinstalling the complete application is generally safer than restoring a loose DLL because the installer can replace related files and dependencies together.

After restoring or reinstalling:
- Restart Windows.
- Open the application.
- Test the feature that previously failed.
- Run another security scan if the detection remains unresolved.
If the detection concerns malware rather than a false positive, remove the application and perform a full scan instead of restoring the file.
Fix 3: Confirm that the application is using the correct architecture
npqtplugin4.dll is a historical 32-bit component. A 32-bit application cannot normally be repaired by placing a hypothetical 64-bit replacement beside it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To identify the application architecture, check the application’s documentation or installer. You can also open Task Manager while the program is running:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Select Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if available.
- Look for an indication that the program is 32-bit.
The exact display varies by Windows version. If the application is old, assume that its QuickTime dependency must match the application’s own 32-bit installation unless the developer documents otherwise.
Do not copy a file from another computer or another QuickTime release merely because the names match. A mismatched version can leave the application unable to load other plug-in files or can change the error from “missing” to “not designed to run on Windows.”
Fix 4: Check the installation directory instead of System32
Copying npqtplugin4.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is not a reliable repair.
Applications often search their own installation directory or a specific plug-in directory. A file placed in a system folder may be ignored, may conflict with another version, and may make later troubleshooting more difficult.
To inspect the expected location:
- Right-click the application’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for folders named
QuickTime,Plugins, or similar. - Check whether related QuickTime plug-in files are present.
- Do not delete or replace files unless you have a backup and the application’s installer is available.
If the directory contains only some QuickTime files, reinstall the application rather than reconstructing the folder manually.
Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the self-registration entry point used by certain OLE or ActiveX components. A browser plug-in file is not automatically a COM or ActiveX registration server.
Running a command such as this is therefore usually inappropriate:
Recommended Free Tools
regsvr32 npqtplugin4.dll
It may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but DllRegisterServer was not found. That result does not show that Windows is missing a registration setting, and repeating the command will not recreate QuickTime’s other files or dependencies.
Use the application’s installer or repair feature instead. Only register a DLL when the application’s official documentation specifically requires it and identifies the correct file and registration procedure.
Fix 6: Use Windows repair commands only for broader corruption
npqtplugin4.dll is a third-party QuickTime file, so System File Checker will not normally recreate it. SFC can still be useful when Windows itself is showing several unrelated errors, damaged system components, or failed built-in applications.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when both commands finish and test the affected application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA successful DISM or SFC result means Windows components were checked or repaired. It does not confirm that the QuickTime plug-in was restored. SFC may report no integrity violations because this file is not protected by Windows.
When these commands repeatedly report corruption, investigate Windows or storage health separately. Do not keep running them as a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns the missing file.
While you are manually checking system corruption and trying to determine which repair changed the result, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies; its repair action is handled by the full version, and it is not required for this QuickTime-specific fix.

A graphics or sound driver is not the identified owner of npqtplugin4.dll. Reinstalling a driver is not a targeted solution for this missing QuickTime plug-in.

Driver troubleshooting becomes relevant only if the same application also shows display corruption, missing audio, device errors, or crashes in unrelated media programs. To inspect devices:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and any category showing a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and driver status.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver from the hardware or computer manufacturer’s official source.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not remove a functioning driver merely because npqtplugin4.dll is missing. The application installer remains the definitive repair for this file.
If you are manually checking several hardware vendors and trying to determine which driver package is actually stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; the driver installation is done by the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the QuickTime-dependent application.
Fix 8: Consider System Restore after a recent removal
System Restore may help if the error began immediately after an uninstall, cleanup operation, or system change and a suitable restore point exists. It is not guaranteed to restore a deleted third-party file.
To open it:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
You can also open Settings → System → Recovery and review the available recovery options. If System Restore does not resolve the error, reinstall the affected application instead.
What not to reinstall
Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not a targeted fix for npqtplugin4.dll. The file is identified as a QuickTime plug-in, not as a Microsoft runtime, graphics driver, or DirectX component.
Likewise, Windows Features does not provide a current QuickTime plug-in package. You can review optional components under Settings → System → Optional features, but enabling a random Windows feature will not restore this file.
When the application should be replaced or removed
If the program is no longer needed, uninstall both the obsolete application and QuickTime:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Uninstall the parent application.
- Search the list for QuickTime.
- Uninstall QuickTime if it is no longer required.
- Restart Windows.
- Check Task Manager → Startup apps for an entry that still launches the old program.
- Check Task Scheduler if the error appears during startup even after uninstalling the application.
If the application is essential but only works with QuickTime, isolate it on a supported legacy test machine or virtual machine rather than installing unsupported software on a modern everyday system. Keep the environment separate from normal browsing and work.
Frequently asked questions
Is npqtplugin4.dll part of Windows?
No. It belongs to the old Apple QuickTime plug-in family. It is not a Windows system DLL and is not supplied by Windows Update.
Is it safe to download npqtplugin4.dll by itself?
That is risky. A random download may contain malware, use the wrong version, have the wrong architecture, or omit other QuickTime files. It also does not repair the application that requested the file.
Use the parent application’s official installer. If that application explicitly requires QuickTime, use the historical Apple package with the understanding that it is unsupported.
Should I put the file in System32?
No. The application may search its own directory or a QuickTime plug-in directory, and a system-folder copy can cause version conflicts. Reinstall the complete application instead.
Will registering it with regsvr32 fix the error?
Usually not. QuickTime browser plug-in files are not automatically self-registering ActiveX or COM components. regsvr32 does not restore the rest of the QuickTime installation.
Is there a 64-bit version?
The historical plug-in is a 32-bit legacy component. Use the package that matches the application, and do not substitute an unrelated 64-bit DLL.
Why does SFC say everything is fine?
SFC checks protected Windows files. It may find no problem because npqtplugin4.dll belongs to a third-party application and is not a protected Windows component.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does the error appear when opening a browser?
A legacy shortcut, application, or saved web-content package may still launch QuickTime content. Current browsers generally do not support or require these old plug-ins, so identify the executable behind the shortcut rather than trying to restore the plug-in to the browser itself.
What if reinstalling the application does not work?
Check antivirus Protection history, confirm that the application is using its complete 32-bit installation, inspect the executable named in the error, and look for startup entries or scheduled tasks that launch an older copy. If the program is obsolete, replacing or uninstalling it is safer than maintaining unsupported QuickTime components.
