Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Before downloading anything, answer these three questions:
- Which program displays the error? Note whether it appears with an old browser, at Windows startup, or when opening a specific application.
- When did it begin? Common triggers include uninstalling Yahoo software, cleaning an old Firefox profile, running a system cleanup tool, or antivirus quarantine.
- Which application architecture is involved? A 32-bit legacy application needs the matching 32-bit plugin. Windows being 64-bit does not make every older application 64-bit.
npystate.dll is a real historical file, and npystate.dll errors usually point to an obsolete Yahoo browser plugin rather than a damaged Windows installation.

The filename is commonly written as npYState.dll. Historical plugin records identify it as the Yahoo Application State Plugin, associated with Yahoo Messenger and other Yahoo software. It reported Yahoo Messenger installation, version, and login state to Yahoo web pages.
It is not a Windows system DLL, Microsoft runtime, graphics driver, DirectX component, or Visual C++ redistributable. Do not copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Why Windows reports npystate.dll now
This plugin belonged to the old NPAPI browser-plugin system. An old Yahoo installation could register the plugin with Firefox or leave its path behind after uninstalling. A cleanup utility might remove the physical file while leaving the browser or startup reference intact.
The most likely causes are:
- An incomplete Yahoo software uninstall.
- An old Firefox profile or plugin registration.
- A damaged legacy Yahoo installation.
- Antivirus quarantine or accidental deletion.
- A startup entry, scheduled task, or application still calling the plugin.
- Malware using the familiar filename.
- General Windows corruption, which is less likely because this is not a protected Windows component.
Firefox no longer supports ordinary NPAPI plugins. Historical Mozilla records also blocklisted npYState.dll after older versions were associated with browser crashes. A current Firefox installation should not need this plugin.
Fix 1: Identify and remove the obsolete Yahoo entry
This is the safest and most likely solution when the error appears during browser launch or Windows startup.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Uninstall remaining Yahoo software
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Yahoo, Yahoo Messenger, or another old Yahoo product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the matching program.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
If the Yahoo program is not listed, continue with the startup and browser checks below.
Check startup programs
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Yahoo software, an old browser helper, or an entry with an unknown publisher.
- Select the entry and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows and check whether the message returns.
Disabling a startup item is reversible. Do not disable random Microsoft entries merely because their names are unfamiliar.
Check the old plugin location
The historical location was:
%ProgramFiles%Yahoo.Shared
To inspect it:
- Press Windows + E.
- Click the address bar.
- Enter
%ProgramFiles%Yahoo.Shared - Press Enter.
If the folder exists, look for npYState.dll and other Yahoo files. Do not immediately copy the DLL elsewhere. First close every browser window and any Yahoo process in Task Manager.
If no legacy program needs the plugin, uninstall the remaining Yahoo software and remove the obsolete plugin registration through that program’s own uninstall process. If the uninstaller is gone but the error continues, the remaining caller must be identified before deleting files.
The exact directory can differ on 32-bit Windows and on 64-bit Windows running 32-bit Yahoo software. Confirm the path on the affected computer rather than assuming that either System32 or SysWOW64 is correct.
If the error names Firefox
A current Firefox cannot load this NPAPI plugin. Do not downgrade Firefox just to use Yahoo Application State Plugin.
For an old, isolated Firefox installation:
- Close Firefox.
- Open Task Manager and confirm that no
firefox.exeprocess remains. - Check the old Firefox profile and its plugin references.
- Look for a reference to the Yahoo plugin or the historical Yahoo shared folder.
- Remove the obsolete reference only after confirming that it belongs to the old Yahoo component.
- Reopen Firefox.
If you cannot identify the reference safely, back up the profile and remove the old Yahoo software instead. The goal is to stop the obsolete browser integration from loading, not to replace it with a random DLL.
Fix 2: Reinstall the original Yahoo application only when required
Reinstalling is appropriate only when a specific legacy program still genuinely depends on the plugin.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
There is no verified current official Yahoo standalone download page for npYState.dll. Do not download an isolated copy from a DLL index, file-hosting page, forum, or search result.
Use one of these safer sources instead:
- The original Yahoo program installer that your organization or household retained.
- A trusted backup of the complete Yahoo application installation.
- Original installation media from a known source.
Then:
- Uninstall the damaged Yahoo program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator if the installation requires elevation.
- Complete the installation without changing its destination unless the program requires it.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the legacy application that originally produced the message.
A complete trusted installation is safer than restoring one DLL because the program may also require plugin registrations, configuration files, services, and other matching components.
If the installer reports that the operating system or browser is unsupported, do not force the installation merely to eliminate the error. Remove the obsolete startup or plugin reference instead.
Fix 3: Review antivirus quarantine
Antivirus software may have removed the file because it was suspicious, modified, or located in an unexpected directory. A missing DLL does not prove that the antivirus detection was wrong.

To review Microsoft Defender’s record:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection related to the original path or filename.
- Read the detection name and affected location.
- Do not choose Restore or Allow on device automatically.
Microsoft explains the risks of allowing a file in Protection History. Restore the file only if it came from a verified, intact Yahoo installation, the parent program truly requires it, and you have checked the complete installation for tampering.
If the file was found in Downloads, a temporary directory, or a random application folder, leave it quarantined and run a full scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
A file with the correct name is not automatically authentic.
Fix 4: Repair the program that calls the DLL
Sometimes the error appears when opening a program that is not obviously Yahoo software. The application may have retained an old plugin dependency.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Identify the caller:
- Note the program name in the error window.
- Right-click its shortcut and select Properties.
- Check the Target field for the executable path.
- In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, locate that program.
- Open its menu and choose Uninstall, Modify, or Repair if available.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the program from its developer’s official installer if repair does not work.
Do not assume that installing Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or Windows Features will replace npystate.dll. This file was an application plugin, not a Microsoft runtime component.
If the program is an old browser helper or Yahoo utility that you no longer use, uninstalling it is preferable to preserving the dependency.
Fix 5: Check the parent process after a startup error
If the message appears before you open any program, a stale startup item, service, scheduled task, or browser registration may be invoking it.
Inspect startup apps
Use Task Manager > Startup apps and disable entries connected to Yahoo or an unknown legacy helper. Restart and test.

Inspect installed applications
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, sort by installation date if useful, and remove obsolete Yahoo software or an old browser helper.
Check Task Scheduler
- Press the Windows key and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that launch Yahoo software, old browsers, or executables from deleted folders.
- Open a task’s Actions tab before changing it.
- Disable only a task you can identify as obsolete.
- Restart Windows.
If the error persists after deleting the DLL, that usually means the caller remains. Deleting more files will not remove the command that tries to load them.
For a difficult case, use the executable path shown by Event Viewer or a trusted process-monitoring investigation to identify the parent application. Remove or reinstall that parent application rather than repairing npystate.dll in isolation.
Fix 6: Run Windows integrity checks only for broader corruption
Because npystate.dll is not a Windows system file, SFC and DISM will not normally recreate it. They are appropriate when Windows itself is showing several unrelated errors, built-in apps are failing, or system files appear damaged.
Recommended Free Tools
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application again.
Microsoft documents this order and these commands in its guide to repairing missing and corrupted system files.
Running the commands repeatedly without identifying the caller will not restore a discontinued Yahoo plugin.
When Windows repair commands are tedious because you are hunting through several possible causes and cannot tell what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it finds; repairs are handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the program that owns this plugin remains the definitive fix when that program is genuinely required.
Fix 7: Do not treat this as a driver problem
npystate.dll is not identified as a graphics, chipset, sound, or Windows driver file. Updating drivers through Device Manager is therefore not a targeted repair.
If the computer has separate display or hardware problems:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Do not change drivers merely because the DLL error is present. If you are already dealing with several hardware devices and manually checking each vendor package is the real problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; driver installation is handled by the full version. It is not required for npystate.dll, and the original Yahoo application is still the correct source for this plugin.
Why regsvr32 is normally wrong
Do not run:
regsvr32 npystate.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, as described by Microsoft in its regsvr32 documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesnpYState.dll was an NPAPI browser plugin, not a known COM or ActiveX server. Registration is not how this dependency is repaired. The command may report that the entry point was not found, and placing the file in System32 first only creates another problem.
32-bit and 64-bit considerations
Historical metadata describes the plugin as 32-bit, but that metadata is not an official Yahoo architecture specification. Treat the architecture, historical version information, file size, and hashes as unverified.
The important rule is simple: the DLL must match the application loading it. A 32-bit legacy browser or Yahoo program does not become compatible because the computer runs 64-bit Windows.
Never “solve” an architecture mismatch by copying files between:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- An application folder
- A browser plugin directory
Those folders serve different purposes, and the wrong copy can hide the real installation problem.
FAQ
Is npystate.dll a Windows file?
No. It was associated with the Yahoo Application State Plugin and Yahoo software. There is no evidence that it is a Windows system component.
Is npystate.dll malware?
Not automatically. The filename is historically legitimate, but malware can use familiar names. Check the complete path, the parent program, antivirus history, and the file’s origin.
Should I download npystate.dll?
No, not as an isolated file. Random copies may contain malware, the wrong architecture, or a mismatched version, and they often leave the broken Yahoo registration untouched.
Does Firefox still need this plugin?
No. Modern Firefox does not support the NPAPI plugin system that Yahoo Application State Plugin used. Remove the obsolete reference rather than downgrading the browser.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as a targeted fix. npystate.dll was a Yahoo browser plugin, not a Microsoft runtime file.
What if deleting the file does not stop the error?
The program calling it is still present. Check startup apps, scheduled tasks, old Yahoo software, and the application named in Event Viewer. Remove or reinstall that parent application.
Can System Restore fix it?
It can help only when a suitable restore point exists from before the file or software was removed. It may also remove recently installed programs or drivers, so back up important files first.
Recommended Free Tools
What is the correct permanent fix?
Remove the obsolete Yahoo plugin and its orphaned registration if no current program needs it. If a legacy application genuinely requires it, restore the complete application from its original trusted installer or backup rather than copying a standalone DLL.
