uxcore.dll errors usually appear as “The program can’t start because UXCore.dll is missing from your computer” or “This application has failed to start because UXCore.dll was not found.” The file belongs to the old Microsoft Windows Live Essentials software family, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the affected application rather than download a replacement DLL.
Which fix applies to you
Use the description that matches what you see:
- Movie Maker, Photo Gallery, Windows Live Mail, Messenger, or Writer will not open: repair or reinstall the Windows Live component that shows the error.
- The message says “entry point” or “Ordinal 52”: you probably have mismatched Windows Live files from different releases. Reinstall the complete matching component or suite.
- The file disappeared after an antivirus scan: inspect Protection history before restoring anything. Reinstalling is safer if the file was removed.
- The file exists under
Windows LiveShared, but the error remains: check for a wrong build or a missing dependency. Do not copy it intoSystem32. - The application was copied from another computer: remove that copy and reinstall from the same original installer or a trusted backup.
- No trusted installer exists: Windows Essentials is obsolete and unsupported. Stop trying random DLL fixes and move to a supported replacement.
What uxcore.dll is and where it belongs

The normal location is a Windows Live shared-components folder, such as:
C:Program FilesWindows LiveSharedUXCore.dll
C:Program Files (x86)Windows LiveSharedUXCore.dll
The second path is common when 32-bit Windows Live applications run on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit version of Windows does not mean that this DLL should be replaced with a 64-bit file. Microsoft Q&A records this file as a 32-bit module and documents the Program Files (x86)Windows LiveShared location.

Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
This is not a current Windows system DLL. It is also not normally supplied by DirectX, .NET, a graphics driver, or the Visual C++ Redistributable. The exact application that needs it must be identified from the error, shortcut, or installation folder.
Match the error to the cause
| Error type | What it usually means | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
UXCore.dll is missing |
The file was deleted, quarantined, or never installed | Check antivirus history, then repair or reinstall Windows Live |
UXCore.dll was not found |
The application cannot find the shared file or one of its dependencies | Verify the Windows Live installation and reinstall matching components |
Error loading UXCore.dll |
The file or a dependency cannot load | Check location, architecture, security status, and build consistency |
Entry point could not be located |
The application found a DLL from the wrong release | Remove mixed components and reinstall the complete matching suite |
Ordinal 52 could not be located |
Windows Live binaries are from incompatible builds | Perform a clean reinstall from one installer |
Application crash involving UXCore.dll |
The file may be damaged, mismatched, or involved in a broader application failure | Check the application event details and reinstall if necessary |
A missing-file dialog can sometimes identify only the first visible failure. A dependency used by UXCore.dll may also be absent, so the message does not always prove that UXCore.dll itself is missing.
Fix 1: Repair the affected Windows Live application
Start here if Windows Live Essentials still appears in installed programs.
- Press Windows key, type Control Panel, and open it.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Look for Windows Essentials, Windows Live Essentials, or the affected application.
- Select it and choose Change, Uninstall/Change, or Repair, depending on what Windows displays.
- Choose the repair option.
- Restart Windows after the repair completes.
- Open the same application again.
If the program starts normally, the shared files were repaired. If the same error returns, continue with a clean reinstall.
Some Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations will not show a repair option because Windows Essentials is no longer a supported installed product. Microsoft states that Windows Essentials 2012 reached end of support on January 10, 2017, and is no longer available from Microsoft for download: Microsoft support for Windows Essentials apps.
Fix 2: Reinstall all matching Windows Live components
This is the most reliable fix for entry-point, ordinal, and “file exists but will not load” errors.
First, preserve any data used by the application. For Windows Live Mail, export or back up mail data before uninstalling. Then:
- Open Control Panel.
- Go to Programs > Programs and Features.
- Uninstall Windows Essentials or every listed Windows Live component associated with the failure.
- Restart the computer.
- Open File Explorer and check for leftover folders named Windows Live under:
C:Program FilesC:Program Files (x86)C:Program FilesCommon FilesC:Program Files (x86)Common Files- Do not delete a folder until you have confirmed that it belongs to Windows Live and is not used by another application.
- Run the original Windows Essentials installer from your own trusted backup or a system image.
- Install the complete matching suite or the complete affected component set.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not combine wlmail.exe, WLDCore.dll, UXCore.dll, or other files copied from different computers or releases. Entry-point and ordinal errors are strong signs that the application and shared DLL were built for different versions.
Known Microsoft Q&A examples include older 15.x files and later 16.x files, but those examples are not a compatibility matrix. Match every installed component to the same original installer instead of selecting a DLL based only on its reported version or file size.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
If the error began after a security scan, the file may have been quarantined.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections around the time the application stopped working.
- Expand a detection and inspect its path, name, and action.
- If the item is clearly part of a verified Windows Live installation, run a current scan before considering restoration.
- Restore it only when you are confident it is the original file and the detection does not indicate malware.
- Restart the application.
Microsoft explains Protection history and quarantine actions in its Windows Security Protection history guidance.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If Defender removed the file completely, reinstall Windows Live instead of obtaining a replacement from a DLL website. A file named UXCore.dll is not automatically genuine. If the file is in an unexpected application folder, has no trustworthy provenance, or is flagged repeatedly, run a full scan and do not whitelist it.
For a deeper check:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Run Full scan.
- If malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan and follow the restart prompt.
The Microsoft virus and threat protection guidance explains these scan choices.
Fix 4: Check the expected location and architecture
Do not use File Explorer search alone as proof that the installation is correct. A random copy elsewhere may be the wrong build.
- Press Windows key + E.
- Browse to the Windows Live installation directory.
- Check whether
UXCore.dllis underWindows LiveShared. - Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures and Details tabs when available.
- Confirm that the application and shared files came from the same installation source.
- On 64-bit Windows, expect a 32-bit Windows Live application and commonly the
Program Files (x86)path. - Do not move the file to
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64.
If the file exists in the expected directory but the program still fails, assume a build mismatch or missing dependency before assuming that Windows has selected the wrong system folder.

System Restore changes system files, installed programs, and registry state but is intended not to remove personal files. Microsoft documents the process in its System Restore guidance.
If the failure remains afterward, reinstall the affected Windows Live component rather than repeatedly restoring the system.

UXCore.dll is normally an application file, not a protected Windows component. DISM and SFC may help when Windows itself is damaged, but they are not guaranteed to restore Windows Live files.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows resources. See Microsoft’s DISM repair guidance and System File Checker documentation.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time while the actual Windows Live installation remains damaged. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its scan identifies, while repairs are performed by the full version; reinstalling the Windows Live application remains the definitive fix for this app-specific DLL.
Fix 7: Do not register or replace this DLL
Do not run:
regsvr32 uxcore.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that UXCore.dll is a self-registering COM DLL, so registration is not a repair for a missing, mismatched, or corrupt Windows Live installation. Microsoft describes the tool’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.
Also avoid:
- copying the DLL into
System32; - using registry cleaners;
- mixing files from different Windows Live releases;
- disabling antivirus protection to force an unknown file into place;
- downloading a “latest” DLL from an unverified site.
Random DLL downloads can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different build, or leave the real broken installation untouched. Safe sources are your original Microsoft installer, a verified backup, or a system image made from the same computer and release.
Drivers and Windows Features
Drivers are not a first-line fix for a Windows Live UXCore.dll error. Use Device Manager only when the event log or the application identifies a separate hardware or graphics dependency.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Do not enable random items under Turn Windows features on or off to fix this DLL. Windows Features does not reinstall the Windows Live shared module. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale drivers and show what needs attention, while driver installation is performed by the full version; for this error, reinstalling the matching Windows Live component remains the definitive repair.
When to stop repairing Windows Live
Windows Essentials is discontinued and unsupported. If you have no trusted installer, backup, or system image, continuing to source individual DLLs is unsafe. Move to a supported mail client, photo manager, video editor, or messaging application instead.
If the error appears only when opening an attachment, repair the file association or choose a supported viewer. The legacy integration may be broken even when UXCore.dll is intact.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFAQ
Is uxcore.dll a Windows 11 system file?
No. It is associated with Windows Live Client UX and Windows Live Essentials applications. It is not normally part of the current Windows operating system.
Which program needs uxcore.dll?
Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Mail, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Writer, and related Windows Live components may use it. Identify the exact owner from the failing shortcut, application name, or installation directory.
The file exists. Why does Windows still report an error?
The file may be the wrong release, loaded from the wrong directory, or dependent on another missing file. Entry-point and ordinal messages particularly indicate mismatched Windows Live binaries.
Can I copy uxcore.dll from another computer?
Only as a controlled recovery from the same computer’s backup or the exact same installer build, and only into its original Windows Live shared directory. Do not copy a random file into a Windows system folder.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I install Visual C++ or DirectX?
Not unless the specific error or event log identifies one of those runtimes as missing. They are not first-line fixes for UXCore.dll.
Why did this start after moving the program?
Windows Live applications depend on shared components and registry state. Copying an installed folder can separate the executable from the matching UXCore.dll and its dependencies. Reinstall the complete component from one source.
