If nrage_dinput8_v2.dll is missing, restore the N-Rage controller plugin from the emulator’s legitimate package instead of downloading an isolated DLL. The file belongs beside the emulator’s other plugins, not in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
What this file actually does
nrage_dinput8_v2.dll is a Windows N64 emulator input plugin associated with NRage_DInput8_V2. Its internal description is Zilmar Specs Plugin(v1.0) for N64 Emulators, meaning it follows Zilmar’s Input Plugin Specification 1.0 used by emulators such as Project64, Apollo, 1964 and TR64.

It is not a Windows component, graphics driver or general-purpose runtime. The plugin provides controller functions including DirectInput and XInput support, rumble, Transfer Pak, MemPak and macros. Project64’s N-Rage V2 source identifies the plugin as N-Rage Input V2, originally authored by Norbert Wladyka.

Fix 1: Restore the plugin to the emulator’s plugins folder
This is the most likely and safest solution because the DLL is part of an emulator plugin package.
Find the emulator’s active installation
- Close the emulator completely.
- Right-click its shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, check Start in and Target.
- Open the folder containing the emulator executable.
- Look for a folder named
Plugin,Plugins,Input, or a similarly named controller-plugin directory. - If the emulator has a plugin-directory setting, open it and note the exact path.
Do not assume the folder beside a desktop shortcut is the active location. Portable emulators, old extracted archives and multiple Project64 installations can each use different plugin directories.
Recommended Free Tools
Reinstall or extract the official package
- Obtain the emulator’s original installer or the historical NRage DInput8 V2.1 package from the legitimate project archive.
- Scan the downloaded archive with Windows Security before opening it.
- Extract the archive to a temporary folder.
- Copy the N-Rage plugin DLL into the emulator’s documented plugin or input folder.
- Start the emulator.
- Open its controller, input or plugin configuration page.
- Select the N-Rage input plugin.
- Save the configuration and restart the emulator.
The file should remain in the emulator’s plugin directory. Do not copy it to a Windows system folder, rename it, or replace it with a similarly named download.
How to tell whether it worked
The emulator should list the N-Rage plugin in its input-plugin selector and stop reporting that the plugin is missing. Open the controller configuration screen and confirm that the buttons and analog stick respond.
If the file exists but does not appear, you probably copied it to the wrong directory or the emulator cannot load that plugin architecture. Return to the shortcut’s Start in path and check the emulator’s own plugin-directory setting.
Fix 2: Check whether Windows quarantined the DLL
Security software can remove an old emulator plugin even when the user did not manually delete it. That does not prove the file is safe or malicious: the result depends on the exact archive, file hash and detection.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the N-Rage plugin or the folder where your emulator is installed.
- Expand the entry and read the detection name, file path and action.
- If the archive came from a trusted emulator or project source, rescan the complete archive and verify its provenance.
- Restore or allow the file only when you are satisfied that the package is genuine.
- Extract the restored plugin again if Windows removed it from the emulator folder.
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine threat can expose the computer. If you cannot verify where the file came from, leave it quarantined and obtain a clean emulator or plugin package instead.

After restoring it, launch the emulator and check whether the input plugin is selectable. If Windows immediately quarantines the same file again, do not repeatedly restore it. Use a fresh, trusted package and review the detection details.
Fix 3: Install the legacy Visual C++ dependencies
The historical N-Rage readme lists these files:
MSVCR80.dllMSVCR70.dllMSVCP70.dll
MSVCR80.dll belongs to the Visual C++ 2005 runtime. It is not installed by .NET 2.0, despite the old readme’s incorrect wording.
For an old 32-bit emulator, begin with Microsoft’s Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package ATL Security Update and choose the x86 package. A 32-bit program normally needs x86 runtime files even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

- Download
vcredist_x86.exe. - Run the installer as an administrator if Windows requests permission.
- Choose the repair or install option.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the emulator and test the N-Rage plugin.
Do not assume a modern Visual C++ package replaces every older runtime. Microsoft supports side-by-side runtime generations, so an old plugin may still require its original generation.
If the emulator still names MSVCR70.dll or MSVCP70.dll, do not download those individual files from a DLL website. Reinstall the matching emulator or plugin package, or obtain the correct redistributable from the original software vendor. Installing Visual C++ 2005 does not guarantee that it supplies every older VC++ 7.x file.
How to tell whether a runtime is the problem
A missing-runtime error usually names a dependency such as MSVCR80.dll, rather than only reporting that nrage_dinput8_v2.dll is absent. If the plugin still fails after the correct x86 runtime is installed, continue with the DirectInput and architecture checks below.
Fix 4: Repair the DirectInput dependency
N-Rage uses Windows DirectInput through dinput8.dll. This is a different file from nrage_dinput8_v2.dll.

dinput8.dll could not be found. Please reinstall the latest version of DirectX.Could not create DirectInput object.
This means Windows can identify the N-Rage plugin as the failed module even when the missing dependency is dinput8.dll.
Check Windows first
- Install pending Windows updates through Settings → Windows Update.
- Restart the computer.
- Open the emulator and test the controller plugin again.
DirectInput is part of Windows. Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, dxwebsetup.exe, installs older side-by-side DirectX SDK components used by some legacy games and applications, but it does not replace Windows’ core DirectInput runtime.
If the emulator specifically reports dinput8.dll, use Microsoft’s official DirectX End-User Runtime package where appropriate. Do not replace the file with a download from an untrusted DLL index.
Repair Windows component files
If Windows itself has damaged protected files, use Microsoft’s repair sequence from an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the emulator again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while System File Checker checks and replaces protected Windows files. Neither command recreates a third-party N-Rage plugin, so you still need to restore nrage_dinput8_v2.dll from the emulator or plugin package.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what its free scan identifies; repairing detected issues requires the full version. Reinstalling the emulator remains the definitive fix when the missing file is the third-party plugin itself.
What success looks like
If Windows was the problem, the emulator should stop reporting a missing or unloadable DirectInput dependency. If the same error remains, check the emulator architecture and plugin path rather than repeatedly running system repair commands.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 5: Match the emulator and plugin architecture
Old emulators are frequently 32-bit, even on 64-bit Windows. A 32-bit emulator normally needs a 32-bit input plugin and x86 Visual C++ dependencies.
The historical project archive does not establish a definitive PE-header architecture for every DLL build, so do not rely on conflicting “32-bit” or “x64” labels from third-party file pages.

Check the emulator build
- Open Task Manager while the emulator is running.
- Select the Details tab.
- Find the emulator process.
- On some Windows versions, a 32-bit process is marked with
*32or(32 bit). - Check the emulator’s About page or package documentation as well.
Then use the plugin build intended for that emulator. Do not force a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit plugin directory or assume that 64-bit Windows can load every 32-bit plugin directly.
If the emulator is very old and the plugin still fails, try the emulator’s documented compatibility options:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Right-click the emulator executable.
- Select Properties → Compatibility.
- Try the Windows compatibility mode recommended by the emulator documentation.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the emulator needs access to a protected folder or controller configuration.
- Select Apply, then test again.
Administrator mode does not repair a missing DLL. It only helps when permissions prevent the emulator from reading the plugin or saving its configuration.
Fix 6: Reinstall the emulator cleanly
If the plugin folder contains partial files, a clean reinstall is more reliable than replacing one DLL.
- Back up your save files, memory-card files and controller profiles.
- Uninstall the emulator through Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove only the old emulator program folder after confirming your backups are safe.
- Download the emulator from its legitimate developer or project source.
- Install or extract it to a simple location such as a folder under your user profile.
- Restore the N-Rage plugin through the emulator’s supported plugin package.
- Open the input settings and select the plugin.
- Test with one controller before restoring every custom setting.
If you use a portable build, reinstalling may mean extracting a fresh copy into a new folder. This also helps identify whether the original directory has incorrect permissions or stale configuration files.
Do not overwrite a working emulator’s save directory while cleaning the installation. The program folder and save-data folder are not always the same.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall controller drivers
If the plugin loads but no controller responds, the missing-file problem is no longer the main issue. Check whether Windows sees the controller.
- Connect the controller.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices, Sound, video and game controllers, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a warning icon or an unknown device.
- Right-click the affected device and select Update driver → Search automatically for drivers.
- If the device remains broken, right-click it, choose Uninstall device, disconnect the controller, restart Windows and reconnect it.
- Install the controller maker’s official driver or configuration software when Windows does not provide a suitable driver.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Devices and confirm that Windows detects the controller.
- In the emulator, test both DirectInput and XInput modes if the plugin provides both.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of identifying stale drivers: its free scan shows what it finds, while installing the selected drivers requires the full version. Use the controller manufacturer’s official driver when available, and remember that driver updates cannot recreate a missing N-Rage plugin.
Project64 has documented historical N-Rage input issues on Windows 10, so a plugin that loads may still need different input settings or compatibility adjustments on newer Windows releases.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is intended for registering DLL-based command components that expose an entry point such as DllRegisterServer. N-Rage is an emulator plugin loaded by the emulator according to its plugin specification, not a normal ActiveX or COM component.
Do not use this as the first repair:
regsvr32 nrage_dinput8_v2.dll
If it returns “DllRegisterServer was not found,” that usually means the DLL is not self-registering. It does not prove that the plugin is corrupt. Copying the file to System32 and registering it there is also the wrong installation method.
Avoid random DLL downloads
Downloading nrage_dinput8_v2.dll from an unfamiliar DLL-index site is risky because:
- The file may contain malware.
- The version may not match your emulator.
- The architecture may be wrong.
- The download may omit required VC++ or DirectInput dependencies.
- It may replace a legitimate quarantined file with an untrusted copy.
- It often leaves the original plugin path or configuration problem unresolved.
Use the emulator’s legitimate installer or the historical N-Rage project package instead. Use Microsoft’s official pages for Visual C++ and legacy DirectX dependencies. Never download dinput8.dll, MSVCR80.dll or another runtime file individually from a random website.
If the plugin loads but controllers still do not work
Work through these checks:
- Confirm Windows detects the controller outside the emulator.
- Open the N-Rage configuration screen and bind each button manually.
- Test DirectInput and XInput modes separately.
- Disconnect other gamepads and virtual controller devices temporarily.
- Check that the emulator is not running under a different Windows account.
- Run the emulator once as administrator if it cannot save controller settings.
- Avoid storing a portable emulator inside a protected system directory.
- Recheck the emulator’s selected input plugin after every restart.
- Try a clean controller profile instead of importing an old configuration.
- Test a different USB port if Windows repeatedly disconnects the device.
If the plugin is visible and selectable, nrage_dinput8_v2.dll is probably no longer the immediate problem. Focus on controller enumeration, input mode and compatibility.
Final escalation checklist
If the error remains after reinstalling, verify each item:
- The DLL came from the legitimate emulator or N-Rage package.
- The file is in the emulator’s active plugin or input folder.
- You checked for a second emulator installation.
- Windows Security did not quarantine it again.
- The emulator and plugin architecture match.
- The x86 Visual C++ 2005 runtime is installed for an old 32-bit emulator.
- Any specifically named
MSVCR70.dllorMSVCP70.dlldependency was handled through the original vendor. - Windows Update has completed.
- A reported
dinput8.dllerror was treated separately from the N-Rage DLL. - DISM and SFC completed without unresolved errors.
- You did not copy the plugin into System32 or SysWOW64.
- You did not use
regsvr32as a substitute for plugin installation. - The emulator has permission to read the plugin folder.
System Restore is a last resort when the failure began immediately after a known system change and normal reinstall or repair steps did not help. It will not recreate a third-party plugin that was never present, and SFC/DISM will not restore N-Rage files.
