Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows folders, answer three questions:
- Which program shows the error: Winamp, a visualization plug-in, or another application?
- Does it happen when the program starts, when a visualization loads, or after an update or antivirus scan?
- Is the affected application 32-bit or 64-bit? Older Winamp software and many compatible plug-ins are 32-bit.
nscrt.dll is a legacy application DLL associated primarily with Nullsoft Winamp and Winamp-compatible visualization software. It is not a normal Windows component, so the safest repair is to restore it through the program that originally installed it.

What nscrt.dll is and is not
Older Winamp releases used nscrt.dll as a core runtime library. Some Winamp-compatible visualization software, including MilkDrop-related software, may also expect it.

Historical Winamp component information associates nscrt.dll with older releases, while newer releases were reported to use msvcr90.dll instead. That means an old plug-in can still require nscrt.dll even when a newer Winamp installation no longer includes it.

Do not treat the file as a Windows system DLL. There is no verified reason to place it manually in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Available metadata commonly identifies it as a Win32 DLL associated with a Microsoft C/C++ runtime library built for the application. Published version, size, checksum, and architecture details from DLL-index sites are not proof that a downloaded copy is authentic or compatible.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application
This is the most likely solution for a missing nscrt.dll.

Check the application directory
- Close Winamp or the program showing the error.
- Right-click its shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab and note the path in Target.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for
nscrt.dllbeside the program executable. - If the error comes from a visualization, inspect the program’s plug-in or visualization directory as well.
If the file is present but the error remains, do not immediately copy another copy over it. The file may be the wrong architecture, inaccessible, corrupted, or dependent on another missing DLL.
Use Windows’ repair option
For an application registered with Windows:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Start the program again.
On Windows 10, the equivalent path is Settings > Apps > Apps & features, followed by the affected application and Advanced options.
If repair is unavailable or does not restore the file, reinstall the exact application version from its original publisher installer or a verified archival installer. Uninstall it first, remove only leftover folders belonging to that application, restart Windows, and install it again without mixing files from a different release.
A clean reinstall is especially important when an old Winamp installation was updated over, partially removed, or combined with files from another version.

Fix 2: Reinstall the old plug-in and host together
If Winamp starts but the error appears when loading a visualization, the plug-in is probably the program requesting nscrt.dll.
- Open the plug-in manager or the application folder.
- Identify the visualization or plug-in named near the failure.
- Close the host application.
- Uninstall or remove that plug-in using its own uninstaller, if supplied.
- Reinstall the host application and plug-in from their legitimate original packages.
- Start the host application and load the plug-in again.
Some Winamp-compatible plug-ins expect files from a Winamp installation. A newer host may therefore work normally while an old plug-in fails because it still depends on the legacy runtime.
If the plug-in has a maintained replacement, use a compatible updated build instead of copying an unrelated DLL into its folder.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an application DLL. Check this before downloading anything.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent events for the affected application or
nscrt.dll. - Expand a matching event and inspect its path and threat details.
- Restore or allow the file only if it clearly came from the trusted application installer.
Do not disable antivirus protection to force an unknown DLL to load. If malware is suspected, scan the entire computer first and reinstall the application from a trusted source rather than restoring an unverified file.
If Protection history contains no matching event, accidental deletion, an incomplete installation, or a plug-in dependency problem is more likely.
Fix 4: Check the application’s architecture and dependencies
A 32-bit application normally needs the correct 32-bit copy of its application-local dependencies. Installing a file with the same name but a different architecture can produce errors such as:

- “The code execution cannot proceed because nscrt.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading nscrt.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “nscrt.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean nscrt.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found nscrt.dll but failed to load one of its dependencies.

Check the following:
- Confirm that the DLL is in the application or plug-in directory expected by the program.
- Right-click the application executable, select Properties, and inspect the Compatibility tab if it is an old program.
- Check whether the application has separate 32-bit and 64-bit folders.
- Review the application’s own log or crash report.
- Use a reputable dependency-analysis utility to identify the missing module, then restore that dependency through the original application installer.
Do not assume that the current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable replaces nscrt.dll. Microsoft’s redistributable packages provide versioned MSVC runtime libraries, while nscrt.dll is a legacy application-specific dependency. Install a Microsoft runtime only when dependency analysis identifies a missing Microsoft library such as msvcr90.dll.
Fix 5: Do not copy nscrt.dll into System32
Copying the file into System32 may appear to fix one launch attempt, but it can hide a damaged application installation and create conflicts with another program.
Windows searches the application directory before general system locations in its DLL search process. Application-local deployment is therefore the normal arrangement for this type of file.
If you already copied nscrt.dll into a Windows folder:

- Restore the application using its installer.
- Ask a qualified technician to remove an untrusted system-folder copy if necessary.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this runtime DLL
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, typically COM or ActiveX components. A C runtime dependency is not normally a self-registering component.
Running:
regsvr32 nscrt.dll
will commonly produce an error because there is nothing to register. It does not repair a missing dependency, replace an incompatible binary, or install a Winamp component.

Use regsvr32 only when the application’s official documentation specifically identifies the DLL as a self-registering component.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is affected
DISM and System File Checker do not normally recreate a third-party Winamp DLL. Use them when multiple Windows features are failing, system files are damaged, or other built-in components show corruption.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Successful DISM and SFC results mean Windows integrity checks completed or repaired protected system files. They do not prove that nscrt.dll was restored. If the Winamp error remains, return to the application reinstall steps.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and inconclusive. A graphics driver is relevant when Winamp or a visualization crashes alongside display errors, black screens, or failures in other graphics applications. It is not the usual source of a missing nscrt.dll message.
If driver problems are also present:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test the affected application again.
For a clean vendor installation, download the driver from the graphics manufacturer’s official support page. Do not remove a working driver merely because nscrt.dll is missing.

Windows Features are usually unrelated
Turning Windows Features on or off is not a normal repair for nscrt.dll.

- Review the enabled features.
- Close the window without changing anything unless the affected application specifically requires a documented Windows feature.
Do not enable random legacy features in an attempt to make the DLL load.

Do not download nscrt.dll from a generic DLL website or use a “DLL fixer.” Such copies can contain malware, be the wrong architecture, belong to a different application build, or fail because another dependency is missing. They also leave the damaged installation unresolved.
The safe sources are:
- the original Winamp or plug-in installer;
- the application publisher’s official download;
- a verified archival installer for the exact legacy program;
- Microsoft’s official runtime package only when the actual missing dependency is a Microsoft runtime identified by analysis.
Never replace a quarantined file with an arbitrary internet copy.
If the error still appears
Use this escalation order:
- Confirm which executable raises the message.
- Check both the application and plug-in directories.
- Review Windows Security Protection history.
- Remove mixed-version leftovers and reinstall the host and plug-in together.
- Check 32-bit versus 64-bit compatibility.
- Identify dependent DLLs if the file is present.
- Test the application under a new Windows user profile.
- Review application crash logs.
- Consider System Restore only if a restore point predates the failure.
FAQ
Is nscrt.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with legacy Winamp software and compatible plug-ins, not a standard protected Windows DLL.
Should I put nscrt.dll in System32?
Generally no. Restore it to the application or plug-in directory through the correct installer.

Not normally. Newer Winamp builds were reported to use msvcr90.dll, but that does not make the modern redistributable a confirmed replacement for nscrt.dll.
Why is the file present but still reported as missing?
The application may be unable to load a dependent DLL, or the file may have the wrong architecture, permissions, or binary compatibility.
Does regsvr32 repair nscrt.dll?
Usually no. This runtime dependency is not normally a self-registering COM DLL.
What is the safest fix?
Identify the program that installed the file, then repair or cleanly reinstall that exact Winamp-based application or plug-in from its original trusted package.
