If Windows reports that “edgeiso.dll is missing from your computer,” “The code execution cannot proceed because edgeiso.dll was not found,” or “Error loading edgeiso.dll,” the problem is usually a damaged Windows component or an older EdgeHTML-dependent application.
The safest fix is to install pending Windows updates, run DISM, then run System File Checker. Do not download an arbitrary copy of edgeiso.dll and place it in System32.

What edgeiso.dll is
edgeiso.dll is associated with the Microsoft EdgeHTML browser engine. File inventories describe it as the “Isolation Library for edgehtml hosts.” Windows update manifests also continue to include the file with Windows and Edge-related components.

On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit components commonly use:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
The two folders are not interchangeable. Despite its name, SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows. A 32-bit application may need the SysWOW64 copy, while a 64-bit process normally uses the System32 copy.

An older file record may show version 11.0.17763.379 and a size of approximately 0.32 MB. That is not a universal version to install. The correct file depends on your Windows build, architecture, language, servicing level, and update state.
Microsoft Edge Legacy used the EdgeHTML engine, but Microsoft ended support for Edge Legacy on March 9, 2021. A new edgeiso.dll error on a current computer is therefore more likely to involve Windows servicing, an old application, antivirus quarantine, or an incomplete installation than a need to install a browser runtime manually.
Why the error appears
The message does not identify one universal program. It is a generic Windows loader error, so first record:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- The complete error text
- The name of the executable that fails
- Whether the failure affects Windows itself or only one application
- Your Windows edition, version, and system type
- What happened immediately beforehand
Common causes include:
- A missing or corrupted Windows component
- An interrupted or rolled-back Windows update
- Antivirus software quarantining the file
- An old EdgeHTML-dependent application with a damaged installation
- A mismatched, corrupted, or wrongly copied DLL
- A damaged Windows component store or dependency
Repair Windows first unless the error appears only in one older application.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Windows servicing is the most appropriate first repair because edgeiso.dll is included in Microsoft’s Windows update file manifests.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
- Launch the affected program again.
If the program now opens, the missing component was probably restored by Windows servicing. If an update repeatedly fails, note its KB number and error code, but do not install a random edgeiso.dll from another computer. The correct standalone package depends on the installed Windows build.
Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance provides additional repair steps when updates will not install.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Run DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC uses that store to check and replace protected system files.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the program that produced the error.
The useful SFC results are:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no protected-file corruption.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If it still cannot repair the files, continue to the escalation steps below.
Microsoft documents this sequence in its System File Checker repair guidance.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through repair results and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed; its free scan shows reported issues, while repair functions require the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace repairing the specific application that needs edgeiso.dll.
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found
A damaged component store may prevent DISM from using Windows Update as its repair source. Microsoft supports using a matching Windows installation source:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to the Windows source.
The source must match your installed Windows edition, language, build, and architecture. Using an unrelated source can leave the repair incomplete. If you do not have a matching source, use Windows recovery or an in-place repair installation rather than copying a DLL from another PC.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a system file. A quarantine entry does not automatically prove that the detection was false or that the file was malicious.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
edgeiso.dll. - Expand the entry and record the detected path, detection name, and action.
- Do not restore the file solely because its name matches the missing file.
- Verify that the path is a normal Windows location, such as
%WINDIR%System32or%WINDIR%SysWOW64. - Check the file’s Microsoft digital signature if a copy is present.
- Run a full scan if the detection details are unclear.
If the file was removed from a Windows directory, run Windows Update followed by DISM and SFC. If the detection remains, allow the security software to quarantine it and investigate the detection rather than downloading a replacement.

If Windows works normally and only one old program fails, the application may be the damaged component.
First identify the program:
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Check the Target field for the executable name and installation folder.
- Note the complete error dialog.
- Check the application’s own launcher for Repair, Verify files, or Check for updates.
- Run that repair or verification function.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If no repair function exists:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Try Repair first.
- If Repair does not help, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it using the developer’s official installer.
- Test it before restoring optional plug-ins or modifications.
Do not assume that modern Microsoft Edge or the WebView2 Runtime supplies the same legacy file. WebView2 is documented separately from Microsoft Edge and does not automatically repair every EdgeHTML-dependent application.
If the application is old and no longer supported, its installer may not work correctly on the current Windows build. In that situation, use the application vendor’s current compatibility guidance or replace the application. Do not copy edgeiso.dll into its folder unless the vendor specifically provides a matching official package and instructions.
Fix 5: Check architecture before replacing anything
Determine whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Find System type.
You can also press Windows + R, type:
msinfo32
and press Enter. Check System Type in System Information.
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may use the 32-bit component location under SysWOW64. A 64-bit application normally uses the 64-bit component location under System32.
Copying a 32-bit DLL over a 64-bit DLL, or the reverse, can replace one error with an architecture mismatch such as “not designed to run on Windows.” A file can also exist and still fail because it is corrupted, has a damaged dependency, has the wrong build, or has been modified.
Fix 6: Update a related driver only when evidence points there
A driver is not the normal first cause of an edgeiso.dll error. Consider driver repair only if the affected application also reports graphics, display, audio, or hardware-initialization failures.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the error, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
For a clean reinstall, download the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page, or uninstall the device through Device Manager only when you have a compatible replacement driver ready.
Outbyte Driver Updater can make it easier to identify which of several installed drivers is stale; its free scan reports driver issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional. It is not a substitute for repairing Windows or reinstalling the application that actually requires edgeiso.dll.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. There is no established evidence that edgeiso.dll is a self-registering COM server.
Running:
regsvr32 edgeiso.dll
is therefore unlikely to repair a missing or corrupted Windows component. It may produce an entry-point error, and it does not restore a file that was removed or damaged.

Avoid random DLL download sites
Downloading edgeiso.dll from an arbitrary DLL site is risky because the file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different Windows build, or lack a valid Microsoft signature. It may also hide the real problem, such as a failed update, quarantine event, or damaged component store.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows recovery, or the affected application’s official installer instead. Manual replacement of a system DLL is an advanced fallback that requires a matching, known-good source and should follow log analysis, not precede it.
When to use an in-place Windows repair
Escalate when all of these are true:
- Windows Update completes but the error remains
- DISM and SFC cannot repair the component
- The file is absent or fails its signature check
- The error affects more than one application
- A matching DISM repair source is unavailable
- The problem began after a failed upgrade or rollback
Back up important files first. Then use Windows recovery options or an in-place repair installation that matches your Windows edition and architecture. An in-place repair can rebuild Windows components while preserving personal files and installed applications, but follow Microsoft’s instructions carefully and confirm the available recovery choice before proceeding.
If only one old application fails after Windows repair, stop modifying system files and focus on that application’s official repair or reinstall.
FAQ
Is edgeiso.dll legitimate?
Yes. It is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with the EdgeHTML browser engine. Verify the local file’s path and Microsoft signature before restoring anything from quarantine.
Recommended Free Tools
Does edgeiso.dll belong to modern Microsoft Edge?
It is associated with EdgeHTML and Edge Legacy, not automatically with modern Chromium-based Edge or every WebView2 application. Edge Legacy support ended on March 9, 2021.
Should I download edgeiso.dll separately?
Generally no. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or the official installer for the application that triggers the message.
Why are there copies in System32 and SysWOW64?
They serve different architectures on 64-bit Windows. System32 normally contains 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit components.
Will installing Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?
Not as a justified first step. edgeiso.dll is treated as a Windows and EdgeHTML component, not as a standard Visual C++ runtime file.
What if the file exists but still will not load?
The file may be corrupted, mismatched, unsigned, the wrong architecture, or unable to load a damaged dependency. Run DISM and SFC, check the signature, and repair the application that reports the error.
What information should I provide for further diagnosis?
Include the full error text, failing executable, Windows version and system type, file path if present, recent update or security events, and the final DISM and SFC results.
