“The program can’t start because nshipsec.dll is missing from your computer,” “The code execution cannot proceed because nshipsec.dll was not found,” and “Error loading nshipsec.dll. The specified module could not be found” are common forms of this problem. The nshipsec.dll file is a genuine Microsoft Windows component used by netsh for IPsec networking, so the safest fix is normally to repair Windows rather than download a replacement.
The 60-second answer
Do not download nshipsec.dll from a random DLL website or copy it from another PC.

If the error affects only one application, repair or reinstall that application after repairing Windows. If the file was quarantined, inspect Windows Security before restoring anything.
What nshipsec.dll does
nshipsec.dll is the Net Shell IP Security helper DLL, a Microsoft Windows system library loaded by netsh. Windows uses helper DLLs to provide commands for particular networking contexts, including IPsec.
It is not normally a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, game redistributable, or ordinary third-party application dependency. A missing copy can therefore indicate a damaged, deleted, quarantined, or mismatched Windows component.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →On 64-bit Windows, the expected native path is:
%WINDIR%System32nshipsec.dll
The 32-bit copy used through Windows’ compatibility layer is normally located at:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64nshipsec.dll
The names can be confusing. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files.
What the error usually means
The wording provides useful clues:
- “nshipsec.dll is missing” means Windows or an application could not find the file in the location it expected.
- “nshipsec.dll was not found” has the same basic meaning, although the missing file may actually be a dependency needed by the DLL.
- “The specified module could not be found” can mean the named file is present but another required Windows networking component is missing.
- “Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error” often indicates corruption, an invalid image, or a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch. It does not automatically prove malware.
- “There was a problem starting nshipsec.dll” commonly points to a damaged file, dependency, or Windows component.
Likely causes include:
- A protected Windows file was deleted or quarantined.
- The Windows component store or disk has corruption.
- A Windows update or servicing operation was interrupted.
- Malware cleanup or an unsafe system optimizer removed or changed a file.
- An unofficial DLL was copied into a system or application folder.
- A dependent networking DLL is damaged.
- One application is loading a private, incorrect copy from its own folder.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates first
Updates can restore system components and correct servicing problems.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the application or command that produced the error again.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not assume that an update alone replaced the missing file.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the most important repair sequence for a genuine missing or corrupted nshipsec.dll.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to complete. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- When it finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Reproduce the original error.
Possible SFC results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no protected-file corruption, so check the application, file path, architecture, and dependencies.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. Persistent failures may require a repair installation or recovery option.
- Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: restart and try again from an elevated Command Prompt.
For a more guided way to identify damaged Windows components while doing this manual work, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its full version performs the repair, but it is not required and Windows’ DISM/SFC tools remain the primary fix.
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, Windows Update itself may be damaged. Microsoft also documents using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess; the source must closely match the installed Windows edition and build.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Defender or another security product may have removed the file.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
nshipsec.dll. - Note the detected file path and action.
- Do not restore the file merely because the filename looks familiar.
Restore it only if the file was in the expected Windows directory, has a valid Microsoft signature, and the detection is demonstrably a false positive. If you cannot verify those points, leave it quarantined and run DISM followed by SFC instead.
If repeated unexplained DLL files disappear, run a Full scan from Windows Security. For a serious or persistent infection concern, use an offline scan and investigate other signs of system compromise.
Fix 4: Verify the path, signature, version, and build
A filename alone does not establish that a DLL is genuine.

Search for nshipsec.dll. On 64-bit Windows, also check:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64
A copy in a user-writable application folder, temporary directory, Downloads folder, or game directory deserves extra scrutiny, especially if it lacks a Microsoft signature.
Check the digital signature
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature from Microsoft.
You can also use an elevated PowerShell window:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32nshipsec.dll"
A valid signature does not by itself prove that the file belongs in every location. The path, signature, architecture, and installed Windows build must all make sense.
Check the Windows build
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
winver. - Press Enter.
- Record the Windows edition and build shown.
A DLL copied from another Windows release may have a different build, architecture, language, or dependency set. Public catalogs list historical Windows versions of this file, but those listings are not a complete current compatibility table.
Fix 5: Remove unofficial replacements
If someone previously copied nshipsec.dll into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder, do not keep using that replacement as a repair strategy.
Do not delete a protected Windows file casually. Instead:
- Record its path and signature.
- Run DISM and SFC.
- Restart Windows.
- Check whether Windows restored the correct copy.
- If an application folder contains a private copy, repair or reinstall that application from its official installer.
A 32-bit DLL cannot substitute for a 64-bit system DLL, and a file from a different Windows build can fail even when the filename matches.
Fix 6: Repair the affected application
If Windows itself works normally and only one program reports the error, the program may be loading a private copy or a dependency from its own directory.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the program’s built-in repair option if available:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options if present.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the program’s local settings.
- Otherwise uninstall and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer.
For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking command. Do not copy nshipsec.dll into the game folder unless the publisher explicitly documents that requirement.
If reinstalling the application does not help, return to Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and the signature and path checks above. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET normally does not repair this Windows IPsec helper.

A driver is not the usual cause of a missing nshipsec.dll, but a damaged network stack or recent driver change can expose a broader networking problem.

- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Properties and inspect the Driver tab.
- If the failure began after an update, use Roll Back Driver if available.
- Otherwise choose Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For the manual work of identifying which of several network drivers is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; driver installation through its full version is optional, and it does not replace DISM/SFC when Windows files are corrupted.
Do not remove network adapters or reset the entire network stack solely because nshipsec.dll is missing. Use those steps only when Device Manager shows a problem or other networking functions also fail.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the error began after an update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or other system change, System Restore may return Windows to an earlier working state.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Confirm the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove recently installed programs, drivers, or updates. If no suitable restore point exists, continue with Windows repair or recovery options.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL fix
regsvr32 registers DLLs that support self-registration, usually through a DllRegisterServer entry point. nshipsec.dll is a netsh helper DLL, not a documented COM self-registering component.
Running this is therefore normally irrelevant:
regsvr32 nshipsec.dll
It will not recreate a missing file, repair the component store, correct the architecture, or restore a missing dependency. Use DISM and SFC instead.
When Windows repair or reinstallation is necessary
Escalate if:
- DISM repeatedly fails.
- SFC cannot repair files after DISM completes.
- More Windows DLLs are missing.
- Windows Update, networking, or built-in tools also malfunction.
- The file repeatedly disappears after repair.
- Disk errors or malware scans report problems.
Back up important files first. Then use the Windows repair or recovery option appropriate for your edition and installation. A repair installation can preserve applications and files in supported circumstances, while a reset or clean installation has more significant consequences.
FAQ
Is nshipsec.dll malware?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. A copy in the expected Windows directory with a valid Microsoft signature is consistent with that role. A similarly named unsigned file in an application or temporary folder may be suspicious.
Can I download nshipsec.dll manually?
Do not use random DLL download repositories. They may provide the wrong architecture, Windows build, language, or a tampered file, and replacing one DLL may leave the underlying component corruption unresolved. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows Security, or an official Windows repair source.
Which folder should contain it?
The native 64-bit copy normally belongs in %WINDIR%System32. The 32-bit copy on 64-bit Windows normally belongs in %WINDIR%SysWOW64.
Will reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET help?
Normally no. nshipsec.dll is part of Windows networking and is repaired through Windows servicing, not those redistributable packages.
Why does the error appear in only one game or program?
That application may be loading a private copy, have damaged files, or be reporting a missing dependency. Repair the application from its official installer or launcher, but repair Windows first if the system copy is missing or corrupt.

What if SFC says it repaired the file but the error remains?
The program may be loading another copy from its own directory, or a dependent networking DLL may still be damaged. Verify the actual path, check the application files, inspect the signature, and review DISM and SFC results again.
