ntasn1.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with the Microsoft ASN.1 API. Windows uses ASN.1 functions for certificate, certificate-revocation-list, trust-list, and related cryptographic structures. Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL from a random website.

Which fix applies to you
Use the symptom that best matches your computer:
- Several unrelated programs or Windows features fail: repair Windows with DISM and SFC first.
- Only one application fails: repair or reinstall that application after checking whether it has a damaged private DLL or another missing dependency.
- The problem began after an update, driver installation, or cleanup tool: install pending updates, use System Restore if appropriate, or repair Windows.
- Windows Security shows a quarantine event: verify the original path and Microsoft signature before restoring anything.
- The message includes
0xc000007b: suspect an invalid image, damaged dependency, or 32-bit/64-bit mismatch. Reinstall the affected application rather than mixing DLL files. - The application is 32-bit on 64-bit Windows: check whether it uses the copy in
C:WindowsSysWOW64, not only the native copy inSystem32.
The normal locations are:
C:WindowsSystem32ntasn1.dll— the native system architectureC:WindowsSysWOW64ntasn1.dll— 32-bit system DLLs on 64-bit Windows
Despite the name, System32 contains native 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Do not swap files between these folders.
Fix 1: Repair Windows system files
This is the safest first repair when the file is missing, corrupted, replaced, or rejected as an invalid Windows image.

Run DISM
- Press Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter and wait for the operation to finish.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which supplies clean protected files for later repairs. Keep the window open even if progress appears to pause.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows when it finishes, then launch the affected program again.
A successful result usually says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations or found corrupt files and repaired them. If the program starts normally after the restart, the Windows copy was likely damaged and has been restored.

If SFC cannot repair the file
Run DISM again and check the result. If DISM says that source files cannot be found, use a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a valid installation source matching the installed Windows edition and architecture. An incorrectly matched source can fail or produce an unsuitable repair.
Then run:
sfc /scannow
If SFC still reports unrepaired files, review:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log

On 64-bit Windows, this does not automatically verify the 32-bit copy in SysWOW64. If the failing application is 32-bit, investigate the path it loads and repair Windows rather than copying a file manually.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If Windows itself works and only one program fails, the application may have a damaged installation, an incorrect application-local DLL, or another missing dependency.
Use the Windows repair option
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three dots beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
If Repair does not solve the problem, return to the same page and select Reset, if offered. Reset can remove application data, so use it only after confirming that important settings or files are backed up.
Some desktop applications do not provide these options. In that case:

- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or the vendor’s maintenance option.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If repair fails, uninstall the program, restart, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer. For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity feature before reinstalling the entire game.
Do not copy ntasn1.dll from the Windows folder into the application folder unless the software vendor specifically documents that deployment model. A program that searches beside its executable may be loading a wrong or damaged private copy instead of the protected Windows copy.
Fix 3: Check for a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch
A missing-file message can identify the wrong cause. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency required by the named DLL is missing. “Not designed to run on Windows” and error 0xc000007b can result from an invalid binary, damaged dependency, or architecture mismatch. They do not always prove that the system has the wrong bitness.
Check the application architecture in its documentation or installer. Then:

- Use the 64-bit release of an application on 64-bit Windows when available.
- Keep 32-bit applications with their normal 32-bit dependencies.
- Do not replace
System32files with files fromSysWOW64. - Do not install arbitrary DLL versions merely to satisfy an error dialog.
- Reinstall the affected application using an installer intended for the correct architecture.
If multiple applications fail, return to DISM and SFC. A system-wide pattern is more consistent with Windows component damage than with one application’s architecture.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security Protection History
Antivirus quarantine is possible, but do not assume it without evidence.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections and quarantined items.
- Open a relevant event and note the original file path, detection name, and action taken.
Only consider restoring the file when the original location, Microsoft signature, and overall system integrity are trustworthy. If the file was found outside the normal Windows directories, do not restore it simply because its name is ntasn1.dll. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead, and run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
If the file is restored, Windows Security may detect it again unless you explicitly allow the item. Repeated detection should be treated as a security and integrity issue, not solved by repeatedly restoring the file.

Fix 5: Install Windows updates and review recent changes
A damaged update or component store can leave protected files in an inconsistent state.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Run DISM and SFC again.
If the error started immediately after installing a driver, update, cleanup utility, or application, temporarily remove or roll back that recent change where Windows provides the option. Avoid registry cleaners and “DLL repair” utilities that replace protected files outside normal Windows servicing.
Use System Restore when the timing is clear
System Restore can undo system-file, settings, driver, and installed-program changes without removing personal files.

- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs to review the consequences.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore may remove a recently installed program or update. It does not replace a current backup and should not be used when you cannot identify a suitable restore point.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall drivers only when evidence points there
A driver is not normally the owner of ntasn1.dll, but a damaged driver installation can contribute to broader Windows startup or application failures.
Use Device Manager only for the device connected to the timing of the problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, or Storage controllers.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties and open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider, date, and status.
- Select Update Driver, or use Uninstall device when the official driver installer will reinstall it.
- Restart Windows.
Obtain drivers from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel. Do not expect a graphics, chipset, or storage driver package to install ntasn1.dll.

Fix 7: Check for malware or disk damage
If files keep disappearing, Windows reports repeated corruption, or Protection History shows suspicious activity:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Run a Full scan.
- If the problem persists, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan and follow the restart prompt.
Disk errors can also damage protected files. Back up important data, then use the manufacturer’s storage diagnostic tools or Windows disk-checking options appropriate to the drive. If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, an in-place Windows repair installation may be safer than manually replacing system files. It reinstalls Windows components while generally preserving personal files and installed applications, but back up first and follow Microsoft’s installation guidance for the matching edition.
Why downloading ntasn1.dll is the wrong repair
There is no official standalone Microsoft ntasn1.dll download or redistributable identified for this component. A random DLL repository can supply:

- A file for the wrong Windows build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A modified or malicious binary
- A file that does not match the Windows component store
- A replacement that leaves the actual corruption or missing dependency untouched
Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder also bypasses Windows servicing and signature protection. Use DISM, SFC, Windows installation media, or the affected program’s official installer instead.
Why regsvr32 does not fix this error
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a DllRegisterServer entry point. It is intended for applicable COM or ActiveX components, not for ordinary Windows runtime and cryptographic API DLLs.
Running:
regsvr32 ntasn1.dll
is not a general repair. It may report that DllRegisterServer was not found, and it does not restore a deleted or corrupted protected file. Use DISM and SFC instead.
Prevention after the repair
- Keep Windows updated and restart when updates require it.
- Install applications from their official installers.
- Use the application launcher’s repair or verification feature.
- Keep Microsoft Defender active and review Protection History after a quarantine.
- Avoid registry cleaners and random DLL download sites.
- Keep backups before major driver, update, or application changes.
- Record the exact application, error code, and file path before changing anything.
FAQ
Is ntasn1.dll a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET file?
No. It is associated with the Microsoft ASN.1 API and ships as a Windows component. Installing those redistributables should not be the default repair.
Should I have two copies of ntasn1.dll?
On 64-bit Windows, the normal architecture-specific locations are System32 for native system files and SysWOW64 for 32-bit system files. The exact files and versions vary with Windows servicing. Do not compare them by size alone or replace one with the other.
Why does only one application report the error?
That application may have a damaged installation, an incorrect private copy, or another missing dependency. Repair or reinstall it from the developer’s official installer after confirming that Windows passes DISM and SFC checks.
Does 0xc000007b always mean 32-bit versus 64-bit mismatch?
No. It can also indicate a damaged binary or dependency. Reinstall the affected application for the correct architecture and repair Windows components before attempting any manual DLL replacement.
What should I do if the error returns after SFC repairs it?
Check Protection History, review recent updates and installations, scan for malware, and investigate disk health. Recurring corruption can require System Restore or an in-place Windows repair installation.
